International audienceThe cabbage stem flea beetle represents an increasingly worrying threat to winter rapeseed crops in Europe, accentuated by the decline in the efficacy of chemical treatments based on pyrethroids and regulatory restrictions. The RESALT project aims to identify and introgress genetic resistances in elite rapeseed varieties, knowing that no major resistance has been discovered to date. A protocol for quantitative measurement of the plant-insect interaction at different phenological stages of the interaction under controlled conditions was developed in order to study the genetic architecture of resistance through an association genetics study. Using data on leaf damage caused by flea beetle on a large panel of accessions of different Brassica species, a first analysis of the genetic determinism of resistance was carried out. These results highlight a diversity of plant responses to flea beetle attacks and suggest the possibility of improving this trait for more sustainable agriculture in Europe.
Identifying ten critical points when implementing projects for restoration of ecological river connectivity: An interdisciplinary perspective
International audienceProjects aiming at restoration of ecological river connectivity are at the centre of an important controversy taking place in the French public arena for several years. The implementation of the national restoration policy is being put into question by several actors. Basing upon the work of an interdisciplinary group of researchers of the French Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research Network (Réseau des Zones Ateliers, CNRS), we first synthesize currently known biophysical and socioeconomic effects of connectivity interruption in its longitudinal, lateral and vertical dimensions. Spotlighting the multitude of pressures riverine ecosystems are exposed to, the variability of territorial contexts and the associated uncertainties, we insist that the decision to restore or not to restore connectivity cannot be based exclusively on science and technical expertise. The (co-)construction of a restoration project should always be inscribed within a project of water resource management at the scale of a territory and accompanied by a democratic decision-making process. We identify ten critical points to take into account at different stages of restoration project implementation in order to collectively define ecological and societal objectives, choose most appropriate restoration measures, evaluate their effects in a robust way, and importantly, achieve projects that would be supported by the stakeholders and local population in spite of the associated uncertainties. We underline the importance of considering several spatio-temporal scales within restoration projects: historical versus future perspective, local versus regional, national or international scale
International audienceNowadays in France, urban leftovers (wastelands, voids, abandoned or neglected spaces) are perceived negatively by the collective imagination, however this has not always been the case. We propose, via a combination of economics and urban planning, a reinterpretation of Albert L & eacute;vy's concept of the three ages of urbanism (1998) on the mutations of the French city throughout History. The aim of this paper is to show that, as of the 1990/2000s, the evolution of perceptions and the re -appropriation of urban leftovers through informal networks of actors rely on new values. This set of values characterise a new emerging social and economic model breaking with the crisis of the production -driven model. We show that these values suggest a new urban model in which urban leftover spaces regain a certain status as urban fallows in town planning strategies, a notion which we conceptualize as a potential for experimentation and adaptation for a resilient urban model. While being markers of the history of cities, signs of past crises and ruptures, urban leftovers are rarely highlighted in the chronology of urban practices and forms. Therein lies the originality of this paper. Furthermore, although Albert L & eacute;vy's model of the three ages of urbanism (1998) is originally based on a reading of the mutations of the French city, its scope is wider as it features a Western understanding of cities which has been shaped over the years by European models as well as the North American model. These characteristics make it an exploitable model for other cities that are experimenting with their urban leftover spaces.
A review and analysis of particle size parameters and their relationships to physical properties of growing media
International audienceAn expanded description of particle morphology and the analysis of its relationships with physical properties may help to optimize the selection of raw materials and particle size fractions used as growing media constituents. Previous works have described the outlines of these relations based mostly on sieving procedures to characterize particle size distribution. They have shown limited and sometimes contradictory results due to the different methods used, size fractions selected, and physical properties measured. Also, sieve analysis, which separates particles based on their width, is less accurate for non-spherical particles, which is the case for most growing media constituents. Recent works have promoted the use of dynamic image analysis (DIA) to precisely analyze both particle length and width. Five raw materials were chosen (white and black peats, coir, pine bark, and wood fiber) and sieved to obtain various particle size fractions. For each particle size fraction and the raw materials, the mean weight diameter (MWD), derived from sieving, was calculated, whereas mean particle length and width were determined using a DIA tool, the QicPic device. Also, physical properties were assessed from water retention curves established using Hyprop systems. The statement that the larger the particle size, the higher the air-filled porosity (AFP), the lower the water holding capacity (WHC) was more precisely redefined. Large variations in WHC and AFP mainly occurred for finest particle size fractions, whereas changes were conversely very small or non-existent for larger particle sizes. From data obtained for each particle size fractions, regression models were established to relate mean particle length and width (both determined using DIA) and MWD (determined from sieving) with WHC and AFP. Mean particle length was identified as the most relevant parameter for predicting WHC and AFP of the raw materials tested
Spatial patterns of causality in temperate silvopastoral systems: a perspective on nitrification stability in response to flooding
International audienceBackground Extreme rainfall and flooding events are projected to increase in frequency and disturb biogeochemical cycles such as the nitrogen (N) cycle. By combining trees and grasses, silvopastoral agroforestry is expected to increase the stability of this cycle in response to flooding. However, little is known about the response of nitrification to flooding in silvopastoral systems. Aim of this study was to assess nitrification stability in response to flooding and identify the main causal relations that drive it in temperate silvopastures. Methods The nitrification stability (i.e., resistance and resilience) was assessed in two silvopastoral systems (i.e., hedgerows and alley cropping) at three positions relative to the trees. The resistance and resilience of nitrification potential were measured in the laboratory after four weeks of flooding stress and four weeks after the end of the stress, respectively. For the first time, we used multigroup latent structural equation modeling (ML-SEM) to explore the spatial structure of causal relations between nitrification stability and soil properties across all positions of the two silvopastoral systems. Results Tree rows of both systems favored nitrification resistance, while the mean nitrification potential under flooded conditions was on average 27% and 35% higher as compared to non-stressed soils at the two positions assessed in the grass alleys. ML-SEM revealed that the causal relations that explained these results differed between the two systems. The ML-SEM models tested were unable to explain the causal relations in the hedgerow system. However, the model that considered a covariance between soil physical properties and soil resources availability (model A) was able to explain them in the alley-cropping system. It revealed that causal relations explaining nitrification stability varied according to the position relative to the trees: in the tree rows nitrification stability was associated with higher soil organic carbon concentration and earthworm abundance; in the grass alleys it was associated with higher soil organic carbon concentration and soil bulk density. Conclusions This study indicates that silvopastoral systems help regulate the N cycle near the trees. The results further imply that improvements in soil organic carbon concentration and soil bulk density favor the regulation of N-related processes in grasslands
National audienceThe paradoxes facing those involved in innovation raise questions about the ways in which research anddevelopment (R&D) in the food sector should be organised. Based on the R&D situation of the company'Frigo Magic', a player in the management of meals and food waste, we are interested in analysing theconditions favoring the development of innovations with a positive ecological impact, high socialacceptability and economic profitability for the field of innovation. In the light of these issues, our focus ison the meeting of supply from agri-food businesses and consumer demand. Through the workshops, weconclude that it is difficult to integrate criteria that are sometimes contradictory and that require arbitration. That's why it's so important to set up collective actions that allow for co-construction between industryplayers and the general public.
Assessing cropping system multifunctionality: An analysis of trade-offs and synergies in French cereal fields
International audienceAssessing agroecosystemmultifunctionality is a way to promote sustainable cropping systems.• Five annual cropping systems were compared using fourteen primary variables underlying seven functions and four performances of agroecosystems. • Despite similar multifunctionality index, cropping systems had contrasted performances. • No cropping system enhanced both crop production and biodiversity conservation• Agroecosystem multifunctionality decreased with the number of field interventions and nitrogen inputs.</p
