Benders decomposition for very large scale partial set covering and maximal covering location problems

    No full text
International audienceCovering problems constitute a fundamental family of facility location problems. This paper introduces a new exact algorithm for two important members of this family: (i) the maximal covering location problem (MCLP), which requires finding a subset of facilities that maximizes the amount of customer demand covered while respecting a budget constraint on the cost of the facilities; and (ii) the partial set covering location problem (PSCLP), which minimizes the cost of the open facilities while forcing a certain amount of customer demand to be covered. We study an effective decomposition approach to the two problems based on the branch-and-Benders-cut reformulation. Our new approach is designed for the realistic case in which the number of customers is much larger than the number of potential facility locations. We report the results of a series of computational experiments demonstrating that, thanks to this decomposition techniques, optimal solutions can be found very quickly for some benchmark instances with one hundred potential facility locations and involving up to 15 and 40 million customer demand points for the MCLP and the PSCLP, respectively

Optimal Trading for an Informed Seller

    No full text
A seller with perfect monopoly power trades an indivisible object with a buyer. Both the seller's and the buyer's valuations for the object depend on its quality, which is privately known by the seller. Moreover, the seller has perfect information about the buyer's valuation for each quality. Even though posting a fixed price is ex ante optimal, it might not be interim individually rational and hence not necessarily implementable. The set of interim optimal allocations is charac-terised by solving a parametric linear maximisation program. These allocations might differ from simple price-posting. If the seller offers a menu of contracts, then allocations that are not interim optimal can be supported as equilibrium allocations. However, this sub-optimality result seems not to be robust if there are at least two buyers who can counter-offer menus of contracts after the seller's offer. In that case, an allocation is an equilibrium allocation if and only if it is interim optimal

Trade-offs between the Stepwise Cost Function and its Linear Approximation for the Modular Hub Location Problem

    No full text
There exist situations where the transportation cost is better estimated as a function of the number of vehicles required for transporting a load, rather than a linear function of the load. This provides a stepwise cost function, which defines the so-called Modular Hub Location Problem (MHLP, or HLP with modular capacities) that has received increasing attention in the last decade. In this paper, we consider formulations to be solved by exact methods. We show that by choosing a specific generalized linear cost function with slope and intercept depending on problem data, one minimizes the measurement deviation between the two cost functions and obtains solutions close to those found with the stepwise cost function, while avoiding the higher computational complexity of the latter. As a side contribution, we look at the savings induced by using direct shipments in a hub and spoke network, given the better ability of a stepwise cost function to incorporate direct transportation. Numerical experiments are conducted over benchmark HLP instances of the OR-library

Changement de gouvernance et performances des entreprises

    No full text

    No full text

L'IMPACT DE LA DIGITALISATION SUR LE ROLE DU CONTROLEUR DE GESTION

    No full text
International audienceThe digitization of the economic sphere is bound to transform the business models of the organizations radically. Through technological devices, with the Big Data Phenomenon, the emergence of new tools based on Artificial Intelligence, the development of the usage of Internet of Objects, the digitization leads equally the processus of the firm to be transformed. All the functions are bound to be impacted, particularly the Management Controller’s. His role is at the same time to assure the dissemination of information inside the firm, but also to advice the managers. Through the framework of the Management Controller’s roles, we put into light the tensions he is subject to. At a first place, the role of technician expert is reinforced, leading to a temporary recentralization of the function; but the Management Controller still has to play a major role, accompanying the operational people in putting in place new methods to manage the firm, recovering a an “augmented” business partner role.
