Between Regulatory Field Structuring and Organizational Roles: Intermediation in the Field of Sustainable Urban Development
Recent contributions in the domains of governance and regulation elucidate the importance of rule-intermediation (RI), the role that organizations adopt to bridge actors playing regulatory or “rule-making” (RM) roles, and those adopting target or “rule-taking” (RT) roles. Intermediation not only enables diffusion and translation of regulatory norms, but also allows for the representation of different actors in policy-making arenas. While prior studies have explored the roles that such RIs adopt to facilitate their intermediation functions, we have yet to consider how field-level structuring processes influence (and are influenced by) the various and changing roles adopted by RIs. In this study, we focus on the mutually constitutive relations between field-level change processes and the evolving roles of RIs by studying the rise of ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives/Local Governments for Sustainability), an RI serving as a bridge for sustainable urban development policies between the United Nations and urban authorities. Using ICLEI as an illustrate case, we theorize four different processes of regulatory field consolidation and fragmentation including: problematization, role specialization, marketization and orchestrated decentralization. We discuss their implications for the RI roles in the field and further theorize the changing dynamics of trickle-up intermediation processes as an RI gains power and influence. This is the pre-peer reviewed version of the following article: Bothello, J. and Mehrpouya, A. Manuel de la Grande Transition: Former pour transformer

International audienceThis article invites us to focus on positive psychology applied to organizations in order to go further than the leadership Taylorist model, known as «command, control and execution». Our approach is based on the following issues: Does the positive leader promote passion and well-being at work? If so, how can we explain interconnections between them? We will try to clarify the process of such a dynamic within the OCP Distribution, a major player in the supply chain of health products. The research design combines qualitative and quantitative methodology. The purpose is to promote the inner transformation of leaders and employees on the long term by fostering their wellbeing and improving their efficiency.
Contribution of conceptual modeling to enhancing historians' intuition : application to prosopography
International audienceHistorians, and in particular researchers in prosopography, focus a lot of effort on extracting and coding information from historical sources to build databases. To deal with this situation, they rely in some cases on their intuition. One important issue is to provide these researchers with the information extracted from the sources in a sufficiently structured form to allow the databases to be queried and to verify, and possibly, to validate hypotheses. The research in this paper attempts to take up the challenge of helping historians capturing and assessing information throughout automatic processes. The issue emerges when too many sources of uncertain information are available. Based on the high-level information fusion approach, we propose a process that automatically supports historians' intuition in the domain of prosopography. The contribution is threefold: a conceptual data model, a process model, and a set of rules combining the reliability of sources and the credibility of information
Gig Workers during the COVID-19 Crisis in France: Financial Precarity and Mental Well-Being
International audienceWe set out to explore how precarious workers, particularly those employed in the gig economy, balance financial uncertainty, health risks, and mental well-being. We surveyed and interviewed precarious workers in France during the COVID-19 crisis, in March and April 2020. We oversampled gig economy workers, in particular in driving and food delivery occupations (hereafter drivers and bikers), residing in metropolitan areas. These workers cannot rely on stable incomes and are excluded from the labor protections offered to employees, features which have been exacerbated by the crisis. We analyzed outcomes for precarious workers during the mandatory lockdown in France as an extreme case to better understand how financial precarity relates to health risks and mental well-being. Our analysis revealed that 3 weeks into the lockdown, 56% of our overall sample had stopped working and respondents had experienced a 28% income drop on average. Gig economy drivers reported a significant 20 percentage point larger income decrease than other workers in our sample. Bikers were significantly more likely to have continued working outside the home during the lockdown. Yet our quantitative analysis also revealed that stress and anxiety levels were not higher for these groups and that bikers in fact reported significantly lower stress levels during the lockdown. While this positive association between being a biker and mental health may be interpreted in different ways, our qualitative data led to a nuanced understanding of the effect of gig work on mental well-being in this population group
International audienceFaced with the environmental issues related to the production of plastics and the pollution that this material causes, it may seem paradoxical to approach the subject by talking about the common good. However, there are many local initiatives to manage plastic waste. These different actors do not form a community with defined borders, and are linked by often unequal power relations. We apply to plastic waste the analysis of commonalities involving three aspects: a resource, rules and a mode of governance. The article is based on case studies of inclusive recycling projects in Mexico, Indonesia, Brazil and Argentina carried out by Danone within the framework of its Ecosystem Fund. We complement the community approach with a reflection on the individual and collective empowerment of the ragpickers involved in the projects.
Profession and deception: Experimental evidence on lying behavior among business and medical students
This paper reports data from a sender-receiver experiment that compares lying behavior between two groups of students, one in business administration and the other in medicine. We use a modified version of the sender-receiver deception game introduced by Erat and Gneezy (2012) to collect data on 393 subjects. The results show that both groups of students respond to incentives as expected: the frequency of lying is higher, the higher the benefit for the sender, and the lower the loss for the receiver is. For given payoffs, there is little difference between the two groups in the domain of white lies; however, business students resort to selfish lies more frequently than do medical students. Furthermore, the analysis does not confirm differences in altruism between the two groups
