Using a seismic network for automatic detection, localization and characterization of mass movements in the Mont-Blanc massif.
International audienceIn the Mont-Blanc massif (western European Alps), seismic stations record numerous signals originating from surface mass movements, such as rockslides, rockfalls, and serac avalanches. The large number of recorded signals makes the automation of the processing workflow essential for practical application. These seismic waveforms differ significantly from those generated by earthquakes, making standard algorithms unsuitable for their analysis. The signals typically exhibit an emergent onset, making it challenging to precisely determine their start time. Moreover, the arrival times of P and S waves, routinely used for earthquake localization, cannot be easily identified. The seismic records also vary in length, reflecting the differing durations of the associated phenomena. To analyze such data using a seismic network, we adapted selected algorithms to address these challenges. For detection, we chose the STA/LTA algorithm, and for localization, we used amplitude decay algorithm and BackTrackBB software, which exploits wave field coherence. To test these algorithms, we created a reference dataset consisting of large, well-documented mass movements. The dataset was developed using regional mass movement databases, webcam image analysis, direct observations made by a network of observers, and seismic data from the Sismalp network. This reference dataset enabled us to fine-tune the algorithms and automate the processing of waveforms related to mass movements
Forecasting Fluid-Induced Seismicity Using Machine Learning Time-Series Prediction
International audienceSeismicity induced by fluid injection (enhanced geothermal systems [EGSs], waste water disposal, and CO2 storage) remains a significant risk to communities and industry because it may cause structural damage and economic losses. In some cases, this can lead to the immediate shutdown of the project, as observed at the Pohang geothermal site in South Korea (2017), after inducing a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Consequently, it is crucial to develop new strategies to anticipate and mitigate the seismic risk posed by these operations. In this work, we present an innovative machine learning-based approach to forecast the seismicity induced by fluid injection into the ground. It leverages a time series of various injection parameters, such as injected volume, flow rate, and wellhead pressure, to capture their relationship with the seismicity rate. Once our model is trained, we forecast the future number of induced earthquakes on a fixed timescale of interest. We apply this strategy to two case studies that have caused induced seismicity at different spatial and temporal scales. First, we investigate the relationship between the massive wastewater injection in Oklahoma since 2006 and the increase in seismicity. Capturing this relationship with linear regression, it is then possible to forecast the seismicity caused by any future hypothetical injection scenario. Second, we study the seismicity induced during the hydraulic stimulation of the Soultz-sous-Forêts (France) EGS in 2005. Using a gradient boosting model, we predict the seismicity over the next 24 hr, relying solely on injection parameters. Our results show that, while model selection should account for site complexity, machine learning can effectively predict seismicity rates using injection parameters, even with limited training data. This work paves the way for real-time applications, such as predicting microseismicity during ongoing operations at the Rittershoffen EGS site, 6 km from Soultz-sous-Forêts

Polarization spectroscopy as an innovative method for the early detection of biofouling in drip irrigation with reclaimed water
International audienceBiofilms are a health and operating issue in various fields, particularly in drip irrigation systems based on reclaimed water. To ensure the proper functioning of drip irrigation systems and save water, biofouling needs to be detected and quantified in drippers. Few studies have investigated the use of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for biofilm monitoring, particularly in the context of drip irrigation systems. A major challenge lies in the strong influence of water on NIR spectra, which complicates biofilm detection and analysis. This study assessed polarization spectroscopy as a new approach to detect biofilms in the presence of water and to discriminate between biofilms and the embedded insoluble elements. Samples were probed with near infrared polarized light to collect single and multi-scattered light separately. Principal component analysis of the spectra in the 1100-1300 nm region was used to distinguish spectra associated with water alone and with biofilm samples in water. Biofilms of a thickness of less than 100 µm could be detected in the presence of water. Partial least squares with discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to discriminate biofilms, biofilms with kaolinite, and biofilms with calcium carbonate (all in the presence of water). The method achieved a discrimination accuracy of 96.4%, demonstrating strong potential for application in cases of biofilm-induced composite clogging. Thus, polarized light spectroscopy in the near infrared region proves effective overcoming the presence of water for detecting and discriminating biofilms. This approach holds promise for application across various fields where biofilm formation presents a challenge

Multiphase tectonothermal events in the Indochina block, viewed from migmatitic rocks of the Kon Tum massif
International audienceCrustal melting, represented by migmatite formed at various stages of orogenesis and in regions of thinned crust, plays a key role in understanding tectonic history. Migmatitic rocks are widespread in the Kon Tum massif, the southeastern part of Indochina, but their timing is still poorly constrained. The zircon (SIMS) U–Pb dating of representative migmatitic rocks and anatectic leucosome reveal three stages of crustal partial melting in the Kon Tum massif. These partial melting events involved three distinct geodynamic settings. The first one occurred at 450–440 Ma during Early Paleozoic collisional orogeny between Viet-Lao and Viet-Cambodia blocks along the Tam Ky-Phuoc Son suture. The newly identified second event took place at 370–360 Ma and was plausibly linked to the break-off of the Indochina-South China continent from the north rim of Gondwana. The third partial melting event, volumetrically the most developed, occurred as early as 260–250 Ma. This event involved the underplating magmatism and the extensional exhumation of the Kon Tum lower–middle crust
Temporal change of arsenic in leachates from Sargassum spp. biomass deposit: mass balance, speciation and microbial biotransformation pathways
International audienceThe decomposition of washed ashore Sargassum biomass is a major health and environmental concern due to arsenic (As) release. A 120-day mesocosm experiment without replication, simulating natural conditions at stockpiled Sargassum sites (temperature, sunlight, rain), was conducted to study the fate of As. In fresh Sargassum, total As concentrations were 85 mg/kg (dw). AsIII was the most abundant species, followed by TMAsO, AsV, AsB and DMAsV. In leachates, the As concentration was initially 10 mg/L and then decreased to 1.5 mg/L after 90 days of experimental monitoring. AsV was more abundant than AsIII, and varying amounts of AsB and DMAsV were also detected. High arsine content, i.e. mainly trimethylarsine ((CH3)3As), was released during the first weeks. After 120 days, 50 % of the initial total Sargassum As content was released in the leachate, while 51 μg volatilised in the atmosphere (0.06 ‰). As remaining in this biomass was still high (55 mg/kg dw) due to the substantial mass loss during its degradation. Bacterial diversity increased over time in the leachate and decomposed biomass, suggesting that bacteria had a major role in the As fate and speciation. According to the French legislation, the discharge limits in terms of As concentration in leachates of the decaying Sargassum biomass from hazardous waste treatment facilities would often be exceede
