    Mobility using first and second derivatives for kernel-based regression in wireless sensor networks

    International audienceThis paper deals with the problem of tracking and monitoring physical phenomena using wireless sensor networks. It proposes an original mobility scheme that aims at improving the tracking process. To this end, a model is defined using kernel-based methods and a learning process. The sensors are given the ability to move in a manner that minimizes the approximation error, and thus improves the efficiency of the model. First and second derivatives of the approximation error are used to define the new positions of the nodes. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated in the context of monitoring gas diffusion with wireless sensor networks

    International audienceThis article concerns the problem of high frequency of the Syriac hymns of the Maronite office of the Holy Week, whose rhythm is doubly stratified, in the sense that it can be analyzed at the same time like a 2/1 bichron rhythm, which is attached to the syllabic irregular pulsation and which is specific to the giusto syllabic rhythm, and like a 3/2 bichron rhythm, which agglomerates the syllabic pulsations within an irregular metasyllabic pulsation and which is specific to the aksak rhythm, according to the Constantin Brăiloiu typology. The hypothesis considers this double rhythmic stratification as an actualization of the aesthetic syncretism which saint Ephrem carried out in the 4th century between the Apollonian and the Dionysian schemas, so that the giusto syllabic rhythm layer would be related to the first schema, while the aksak rhythm layer would indicate the second schema. The validation of this assumption rests on rythmico-melodic morphophonological analysis of the stanza-model which is commune to nine 11/8 measured hymns recorded by the Master of this tradition, the Antonine Father Maroun Mrad (1913-2009). This analysis proceeds of modal semiotics and makes it possible to rewrite the surface of these hymns in terms of deep structures. Thus the diachronic/phylogenic perspective of the ancient aesthetic syncretism is actualized in the synchronic/ontogenetic form of a transformation which operates in generative musical grammatical semiotics between two morphological layers. It is in the sense that these anthems of Christ passion are stressed by a dabkeh aksak country dance, which registers the enthusiasm of Christ resurrection in the Way of Cross.Cet article est confronté à la problématique inhérente à la haute fréquence des hymnes syriaques de l’office de la Semaine Sainte maronite, dont le rythme est doublement stratifié, en ce sens qu’il peut être analysé à la fois comme procédant d’une bichronie 2/1, qui est attachée aux pulsations syllabiques et qui est propre au giusto syllabique, et d’une bichronie 3/2, qui agglomère les pulsations syllabiques au sein de pulsations métasyllabiques et qui est propre à l’aksak, selon la typologie établie par Constantin Brăiloiu. L’hypothèse avancée consiste à considérer cette double stratification rythmique comme une actualisation du syncrétisme esthétique qu’a réalisé saint Éphrem de Nisibe au IVe s. entre le schème apollinien et le schème dionysiaque, en sorte que la strate giusto syllabique serait liée au première schème, tandis que la strate aksak dénoterait la deuxième strate. La validation de cette hypothèse repose sur une analyse morphophonologique rythmico-mélodique de la strophe-modèle commune à neuf hymnes de mesure 11/8, enregistrées par le maître de cette tradition, le Père antonin Maroun Mrad (1913-2009). Cette analyse procède de la sémiotique modale et permet de réécrire la surface de ces hymnes en termes de structures sous-jacentes. Ainsi la perspective diachronique/phylogénique du syncrétisme esthétique antique se trouve-t-elle réactualisée sous la forme synchronique/ontogénique d’une transformation qui opère en sémiotique grammaticale générative musicale entre deux strates morphologiques. C’est en ce sens que ces hymnes de la passion christique sont investie d’une dynamique de danse dabkeh aksak paysanne, qui inscrit l’enthousiasme de la résurrection christique dans le Chemin de Croix

    International audienceThe essential oils (EOs) isolated from the leaves and twigs of Juniperus excelsa M.Bieb. growing wild in Lebanon were characterized, and their antimicrobial activity and antiradical capacity were evaluated. The EOs were obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus and characterized by GC and GC/MS analyses. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by determining minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against a Gram-positive and a Gram-negative bacterium, a yeast, and a dermatophyte with the broth microdilution technique. A total of 28 constituents was identified and accounted for 90.1 and 95.6% of the twig and leaf EO composition, respectively. Both EOs were essentially composed of monoterpene hydrocarbons (46.7 and 59.6% for twig and leaf EOs, resp.) and sesquiterpenes (39.4 and 32.1%, resp.). The main components were α-pinene, α-cedrol, and δ-car-3-ene. The J. excelsa EOs did not show any antiradical potential, but revealed interesting in vitro antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and Trichophyton rubrum (MICs of 64 and 128 μg/ml, resp.). The three major compounds were tested separately and in combination according to their respective amounts in the oil. δ-Car-3-ene was the most active component and is undoubtedly one of the constituents driving the antifungal activity of J. excelsa essential oil, even though synergies are probably involved

    Application of an inverse neural network model for the identification of optimal amendment to reduce Copper toxicity in phytoremediated contaminated soils

    International audienceArtificial neural network ANN prediction approaches applied to the modeling of soil behavior are often solved in the forward direction, by measuring the response of the soil (outputs) to a given set of soil inputs. Conversely, one may be interested in the assessment of a given set of soil inputs that leads to given (target) soil outputs. This is the inverse of the former problem. In this study, we develop and test an inverse artificial neural network model for the prediction of the optimal soil treatment to reduce copper (Cu) toxicity assessed by a given target concentration of Cu in dwarf bean leaves (BL) from selected soil inputs. In this study the inputs are the soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and a given target toxicity value of Cu, whereas the output is the best treatment to reduce the given toxicity level. It is shown that the proposed method can successfully identify the best soil treatment from the soil properties (inputs). Two important challenges for optimal treatment prediction using neural networks are the non-uniqueness of the solution of the inverse problem and the inaccuracies in the measurement of the soil properties (inputs). It is shown that the neural network prediction model proposed can overcome both these challenges. It is also shown that the proposed inverse neural network method can potentially be applied with a high level of success to the phytoremediation of contaminated soils. Before large-scale application, further validation is needed by performing several experiments and investigations including additional factors and their combinations to capture the complex soil behavior

    Also arXiv:1206.0448International audienceWe give a formula for the Lipschitz constant in Thompson's part metric of any order-preserving flow on the interior of a (possibly infinite dimensional) closed convex pointed cone. This provides an explicit form of a characterization of Nussbaum concerning non order-preserving flows. As an application of this formula, we show that the flow of the generalized Riccati equation arising in stochastic linear quadratic control is a local contraction on the cone of positive definite matrices and characterize its Lipschitz constant by a matrix inequality. We also show that the same flow is no longer a contraction in other natural Finsler metrics on this cone, including the standard invariant Riemannian metric. This is motivated by a series of contraction properties concerning the standard Riccati equation, established by Bougerol, Liverani, Wojtowski, Lawson, Lee and Lim: we show that some of these properties do, and that some other do not, carry over to the generalized Riccati equation

    International audienceHarlanjohnsonella annulata Elliott in Granier & Deloffre, 1993, non 1968, was originally described from Cenomanian strata in Serbia. Herein, we report its first occurrence outside the type area, i.e., in Lebanon, and in older strata, i.e., earliest Bedoulian or Late Barremian in age. Our specimens are compared with topotypic material. The species was recently revised by Radoičić & Schlagintweit who transferred it to the genus Dissocladella. However, we never observed any secondary branch and therefore we cannot agree with their interpretation. In addition on the basis of calculations and comparisons of the volume ratio of several species, either fossil (Montiella elitzae and Triploporella steinmannii) and living (Dasycladus vermicularis and Neomeris dumetosa) Dasycladalean algae, we assume that Harlanjohnsonella annulata was more probably an endosporate form rather than a cladosporate form

    ICT implementation. Going beyond expectations? An essay of interpretation through competitive intelligence

    International audienceThis article focuses on the uncertain relationship between organizational intelligence and ICT usage. It recalls the implementation effects of information and communication technologies ICT under the gaze of collective intelligence. Accordingly, the approach was tested through the observation and interpretation of interactions between a tool of collective intelligence, namely an online-system of indicators, and a network of agricultural cooperatives of a regional federation in southern France. The teachings of this research overstep traditional and theoretical approaches in terms of acceptance and appropriation. Consequently, the actor-network approach has been mobilized - It has revealed that the use of the translation process has led to the occurrence of interactions that go beyond previously intended objectives. Surprisingly, the tool appears as a collective intelligence support in the sense of revealing four facets: inductor (of projects) tool, a symbol (of new networks of exchange) tool, a reference (informational) tool, and lastly a pretext (or a support) tool of the network's concretization. Hence, this paper shows that the use of ICT could promote organizational intelligence in the measure of allowing a refocus on the human but also on perfect subjective information

Each PV technology is developed striving increase in efficiency or simplicity in production process. In this article, we will present a survey on PV panels. State of the art of each technology will also be presented. We will focus on materials used and on the operating principle of each type. The main interest in this analysis, for our future work, is how to manage the use of PV panels to increase their life span? Which technology is more suitable to include ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) for monitoring, maintenance and life cycle extension by means of adequate control techniques?Avec la croissance de panneaux photovoltaïques, de nombreux semi-conducteurs sont étudiés et exploités. De nouvelles formes et des générations de cellules photovoltaïques sont produites présentent des caractéristiques originales et particulières. Chaque technologie photovoltaïque est développée pour l'augmentation de l'efficacité ou pour la simplicité dans le processus de production. Dans cet article, nous allons présenter une étude sur les panneaux photovoltaïques. Etat de l'art de chaque technologie sera également présenté. Nous allons nous concentrer sur les matériaux utilisés et sur ​​le principe de fonctionnement de chaque type. L'intérêt principal de cette analyse, pour notre travail futur, est de savoir comment gérer l'utilisation de panneaux photovoltaïques pour augmenter leur durée de vie?     Electronic structure and peculiar bonding properties of NdNiMg5 from first principles

    International audienceThe newly found ternary compound NdNiMg5 has been studied within DFT based methodologies. Results of cohesive energy, charge transfers, elastic constants and electron localized function mapping as well as electronic structure and bonding properties have been compared with those of isostructural binary NdNi. The calculation results have shown that Mg substructures interlayering NdNi – like slabs exhibit different magnitudes of charge transfers all within range of metallic behavior and the different Mg substructures selectively bind with Nd and Ni substructures. As a consequence an enhanced cohesion with respect to binary intermetallic NdNi is identified. The whole set of elastic constants and their combinations in orthorhombic symmetry confirm the mechanical stability of NdNiMg5 with larger compressibility and less ductility (more brittleness) with respect substructures to NdNi. While in an intermetallic compound such as NdNi the bonding is ensured mainly by Nd–Ni interaction, in NdNiMg5 Nd–Ni, Nd–Mg, Ni–Mg as well as Mg–Mg participate to the bonding and the extra electrons brought by Mg are found within bonding states thus illustrating furthermore the enhanced cohesion of the ternary versus the binary systems
