Transferability of continuous- and class-pedotransfer functions to predict water retention properties of semiarid Syrian soils
International audienceHydraulic properties of soils, particularly water retention, are key for appropriate management of semiarid soils. Very few pedotransfer functions (PTFs) have been developed to predict these properties for soils of Mediterranean regions, where data are particularly scarce. We investigated the transferability of PTFs to semiarid soils. The quality of the prediction was compared to that for soils originating from temperate regions for which most PTFs were developed. We used two soil data sets: one from the Paris basin (French data set, n = 30) and a Syrian data set (n = 30). Soil samples were collected in winter when the water content was near field capacity. Composition and water content of the samples were determined at seven water potentials. Continuous- and class-PTFs developed using different predictors were tested using the two data sets and their performance compared to those developed using artificial neural networks (ANN). The best performance and transferability of thePTFs for both data sets used soil water content at field capacity as predictor after stratification by texture. The quality of prediction was similar to that for ANN-PTFs. Continuous- and class-PTFs may be transferable to other countries with performances that vary according to their ability toaccount for variation in soil composition and structure. Taking into account predictors of composition (particle size distribution, texture, organic carbon content) and structure (bulk density, porosity, field capacity) did not lead to a better performance or the best transferability potential
« Schisme à Grignon » autour de la comptabilité agricole, durant les années 1870
International audienceDurant sept ans, une controverse, parfois très vive, à propos de l’utilisation de la comptabilité en partie double dans l’agriculture agite le milieu des agronomes français. Elle oppose Paul-Claude Dubost, professeur d’économie rurale à l’École d’agriculture de Grignon, aux partisans du modèle comptable de Mathieu de Dombasle, développé dans les années 1820, repris dans de nombreux ouvrages et enseigné dans les écoles d’agriculture. Lui reprochant sa complexité, sa lourdeur et le caractère arbitraire de ses évaluations, Dubost lui dénie également toute pertinence en matière d’appréciation de la rentabilité des exploitations, en raison de l’interdépendance des diverses productions au sein d’un système de culture donné. Il propose une alternative simplifiée que ses adversaires considèrent comme trop rudimentaire. Plus d’une quinzaine d’auteurs participent à une discussion sans équivalent dans le monde industriel français au xix e siècle. Sa teneur témoigne de l’importance accordée à la comptabilité par les agronomes, pour lesquels elle est avant tout un moyen de tester leurs hypothèses et de vérifier le bien-fondé de leurs options techniques. Il ne s’agit pas, 150 ans après, de départager les opposants, mais de souligner le caractère récurrent de la question de l’adaptation des outils comptables aux besoins de leurs utilisateurs et de l’inanité de toute solution prétendument universelle
New Insights in Biocontrol Strategy against Cephalcia tannourinensis, the Principal Insect Defoliator of Lebanese Cedars
International audienceTannourine cedars forest, dominated by cedars (Cedrus libani, Richard), suffers from native sawfly attacks, Cephalcia tannourinensis (Chevin). The current study assesses the presence of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) endemic to the forest for their potential use as biocontrol agents in an integrated pest management to control C. tannourinensis. A survey was conducted using Galleria mellonella baits in fifteen selected sites taking into consideration the cedars' different habitats. One EPN species, Steinernema feltiae, as determined by morphometric and molecular analyses, was found in one site in the forest and was tested under laboratory conditions against C. tannourinensis prepupae, causing a mortality of 64% at 250 Infective Juveniles (IJs)/prepupa. In light of previous studies, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (commercial strain) was accordingly considered for the controlled in situ experiments where the pathogenicity of this EPN was evaluated on C. tannourinensis. A concentration of 625,000 IJs/m(2) of H. bacteriophora caused a mortality rate of 85% on C. tannourinensis following inundative treatments conducted in jars buried in the forest's soil. While EPN succeeded to emerge from G. mellonella cadavers under the same conditions, no EPN emerged out of C. tannourinensis despite the high mortality percentage; also, opportunistic nematodes emerged unexpectedly out of C. tannourinensis cadavers

Advanced Resource Allocation Technique for a Fair Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access System
International audienceIn this paper, a novel resource allocation technique is proposed for a power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access scheme using successive interference cancellation in a downlink cellular system. It aims at providing a flexible balancing between throughput and fairness maximization and incorporates unequal power repartition among allocated subbands using waterfilling. Its main strength is the ability to achieve a high level of fairness in every scheduling slot, therefore improving the quality of experience for all users. Fairness is achieved by the introduction of a new efficient scheduling metric within the allocation process. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed metric enhances both long-term and short-term fairness, and improves system capacity, when compared to the conventional proportional fairness scheduler

Guiding Clone-and-Own When Creating Unplanned Products from a Software Product Line
International audienceClone-and-own is a simple and intuitive practice adopted to construct new product variants based on existing ones. However, when the developed family of products becomes rich, maintaining shared assets and managing variability between the clones become tedious tasks. Therefore, migrating the family of products into a software product line becomes essential. Despite that, software engineers remain interested in constructing new product variants that are not provided by the software product line. In this short paper, we briefly present our approach to guide software engineers in deriving new products from a software product line based on clone-and-own. This approach consists of proposing the possible configuration scenarios by means of operations to perform at asset level, in order to derive a new product variant
