The Role of (Social) Media News in Shaping Romanian Voters’ Support for Populist versus Mainstream Parties
No full textThis study builds on research exploring how media exposure and conspiracy beliefsshape support for populist movements, addressing a gap in analyses comparing populist andmainstream parties in Romania. Using an original dataset from an online panel survey conducted by Kantar/Lightspeed with 1,500 respondents, the paper examines predictors of vote intention for both the radical right Alianța pentru Unirea Românilor (AUR) and the mainstream Partidul Social Democrat (PSD). Results show that social media news consumption is associated not only with AUR support but also with left-wing PSD support. These findings suggest that, in Romania, PSD and AUR share similar voter profiles, highlighting the unique overlap between left – and right-wing populist appeal

No full textThe constant development of technology undoubtedly has an extraordinary impact on the society. New technical solutions bring to the table both tremendous opportunities and challenges. Over the past few years, advances in artificial intelligence, especially in the field of machine learning, have led to the development of a controversial technique known as deepfake, that has given people the ability to generate convincing and increasingly sophisticated, yet artificial media content. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of such synthetic images on the phenomenon of spreading disinformation. An experiment was conducted, the results of which are intended to reflect the ability of Polish society to identify fake visual content and distinguish it from real photographs.Wciąż rozwijające się technologie bez wątpienia mają niezwykły wpływ na funkcjonowanie społeczeństwa. Niosą one za sobą zarówno ogromne możliwości, jak i wyzwania. W ciągu ostatnich kilku lat, postępy w rozwijaniu zdolności sztucznej inteligencji, a zwłaszcza w dziedzinie uczenia maszynowego, doprowadziły do powstania kontrowersyjnej techniki, dzięki której człowiek zyskał nową zdolność polegającą na generowaniu przekonujących i coraz doskonalszych, lecz sztucznych treści multimedialnych, czyli deepfake’ów. Celem badania jest określenie znaczenia generowanych syntetycznych treści multimedialnych dla zjawiska rozpowszechniania dezinformacji. Przeprowadzono eksperyment, którego wyniki mają odzwierciedlać zdolność polskiego społeczeństwa do rozpoznawania fałszywych materiałów wizualnych i odróżnienia ich od prawdziwych zdjęć

No full textThe impact of non-governmental organizations on modern democratic states is multidimensional. The majority of publications about the third sector focus on its positive aspects, very often overlooking the potential dangers of the growing importance of this type of institutions. The main objective of this thesis is to explore the potential for the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity to influence the 2023 parliamentary elections. The analysis made use of political science literature, legal acts, statistical data and media coverage of the dispute between the Law and Justice government and the management of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity.Wpływ organizacji pozarządowych na współczesne państwach demokratycznych jest wielowymiarowy. Ogromna część publikacji dotyczących trzeciego sektora skupia się na jego pozytywnych aspektach, bardzo często pomijając potencjalne zagrożenia płynące z rosnącego znaczenia tego typu instytucji. Stąd też głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie możliwości wywarcia wpływu na wybory parlamentarne z 2023 roku przez Wielką Orkiestrę Świątecznej Pomocy. Research With(out) Values: Institutionalization and Impact of Media Accountability as an Academic Field
No full textResearch on media accountability regularly stresses the importance of free and responsible media for democratic societies. But how far can research itself contribute to holding the media accountable? The paper discusses the relevance of media accountability as an academic field and its impact on journalism practice, media self-regulation, and society. The analysis is based on a comparative evaluation of research infrastructures for media accountability in 14 European countries and a discussion of cases of bi-directional interplay between journalism and academia. The study enables a reflection of success factors for relevant media accountability research and develops perspectives for future studies
Echoes of the People: Unveiling Populist Constructs in Chega and Vox’s Discourse on Elites
No full textThe following paper draws from the social constructionist approach (Burr 2015) and social identity theory (Tajfel, 1974) to analyze the populist discursive frameworks in the Facebook accounts of populist far-right parties Chega (Portugal) and Vox (Spain) during January‑March 2023. The aim is to demonstrate how country-based contexts affect and shape discursive constructions of the elites. Methodologically, this paper follows the discourse historical approach (Wodak, 2001) to critical discourse analysis. The results show that although both parties’ constructions of “the people” are identical, the same does not concern the elites, as Vox’s characterization of this group encompasses environmentalists, the media, feminists, trans people, and separatists. Neither Vox nor Chega places immigrants as part of either group but as a sub-group that is protected by the elites, with Chega adding the Roma ethnic minority to the same predicament

No full textThis article analyses online reportage on the basis of Maria Wojtak’s method of genological analysis. The aim was to check whether it represents a revolution, destruction, or evolution of traditional reportage, the features of which were described in the first part of the article. In the second part, 12 selected digital reportages were analysed in 4 aspects: structural, pragmatic, cognitive and stylistic. This was used to create a canonical pattern of online reportage and to place the genre in its proper place in journalistic genology, and online journalism.W artykule przeanalizowano reportaż internetowy na podstawie metody analizy genologicznej Marii Wojtak. Celem było sprawdzenie, czy stanowi on rewolucję, destrukcję czy ewolucję tradycyjnego reportażu, którego cechy zostały opisane w pierwszej części artykułu. W drugiej części przeanalizowano dwanaście wybranych reportaży cyfrowych w czterech aspektach: strukturalnym, pragmatycznym, poznawczym oraz stylistycznym. Posłużyło to do stworzenia wzorca kanonicznego reportażu internetowego oraz umiejscowienia gatunku w odpowiedniej pozycji genologii dziennikarskiej i dziennikarstwa internetowego.
