Marcus S. Duron Interview
No full textMarcus S. Duron (Class of 1986) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez in the Oral History Studio in Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on October 23, 2023. He was born on April 11, 1963, and grew up in Irving, Texas. Both of his parents grew up in Little Mexico in Dallas, and his father only spoke Spanish until he was 15 years old. Mr. Duron discussed becoming more interested in academics in his fifth and sixth grade years. He attended SMU football games with his best friend as a pre-teen and teenager, which led him to decide he wanted to attend SMU. He received his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from SMU in 1986. He was heavily involved in student organizations during his time here. He was the first non-white member of Alpha Tau Omega, the president of College Hispanic American Students, and the first person to serve as the human Peruna mascot at SMU sporting events. He discussed winning an all-expenses paid trip for two to Hawaii his senior year at SMU, which he gifted to his parents upon his graduation. He moved to Chicago and then New York City after graduating from SMU, where he worked at the Wall Street Journal, became involved in politics, and eventually worked in real estate. He moved back to Dallas to help his father run the family construction company, and he has served several terms on the SMU Alumni Board. He has an adult daughter, Sophia, who lives in New York City
Alicia Booker Interview
No full textDr. Alicia Booker (Class of 2005, M.A. 2013) was interviewed by Sabrina Simien via Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on October 27, 2023. She received a bachelor's degree in Broadcast and Print Journalism and a master’s degree in Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management from SMU. Dr. Booker was born in Baytown, Texas in 1977 and grew up as the youngest of four children. After moving to Clear Lake, Texas, Dr. Booker attended Clear Lake High School where she joined ROTC. After graduation, she joined the U.S. Navy and served until she began her education at the Richland Community College in 1997. In 2002, Dr. Booker transferred to SMU to finish her education and earned her bachelor’s degree in 2005. After her graduation, she worked in Georgia and New York before moving back to Texas to pursue her master’s degree at SMU. While there, Dr. Booker worked as a Program Coordinator until she earned her degree in 2013. In 2015, she pursued her doctoral degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution at Nova Southeastern University and graduated in 2023. While earning her degrees, Dr. Booker worked as an Assistant to the Office of the Ombudsperson, Graduate Research Assistant, Associate Ombudsman, and Ombudsperson at various universities. Additionally, she also founded her company Corporate Confidence in 2006 where she helps people with their professional development and conflict management skills. Since earning her degrees, Dr. Booker has been working as an Ombuds for Baylor, an Adjunct Faculty member at SMU, and a Guest Lecturer for Nova Southeastern University. During her interview, Dr. Booker talked about her upbringing, experience with racism, time at SMU, professional career, and the importance of community and confidence
Darian Taylor Interview
No full textDarian Taylor (Class of 2020) was interviewed by Sarah Khoja in the Oral History Studio at Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on February 25, 2022. Mr. Taylor was born in Houston, Texas, to a family of five. He moved to Cypress, a predominantly white suburb outside of Houston, during middle school. During his interview, Mr. Taylor discusses his family and childhood in Houston, as well as the forces that led him to pursue a degree at SMU. He talks about his personal growth at SMU while engaging with people as his most authentic self as an African American student. While at SMU, he was involved with Student Senate as the Student Body President for 2019-2020. Mr. Taylor founded the Big Event day of service on campus, and he discusses his obstacles in creating a new service opportunity for SMU's student body. The community service day allows students to engage with the Dallas community, especially historically marginalized populations. Mr. Taylor graduated in Spring 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and CCPA (Corporate Communications and Public Affairs). At the time of the interview, he lived in Dallas and worked in financial and crisis communications, while also serving as an advisor to Dedman College and the Meadows School of the Arts
Lori Lizarraga Interview
No full textLori Lizarraga (Class of 2015) was interviewed by Jonathan Angulo in the Oral History Studio of Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on July 8, 2022. She was born in Louisiana and raised in Waxahachie, Texas. Her parents, who immigrated from Mexico and Ecuador, introduced her to their nations' respective histories at an early age. After attending private schools as a young child, she was homeschooled for a time before transferring to a magnet school for high school. She ultimately graduated from a public high school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a dancing career. Ms. Lizarraga returned to Waxahachie to help her family and enrolled at SMU after her sister attended. In her interview, she discusses the isolation she felt due to SMU's lack of resources for commuting students and the challenges she experienced as a working-class student among her wealthier peers. She describes how a journalism course inspired her to pursue a career in the field. While at SMU, Ms. Lizarraga studied abroad in her father's home country, Ecuador, and went on to live there after graduating. She became involved with local organizations after an earthquake ravaged the country in 2016, after which she was hired at a news agency in the United States. Throughout her journalism career, she has covered issues focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 2021, she published the LatinXed Project, which recounts her experiences as a woman of color in the news industry. This report led to many newsrooms across the country discontinuing the use of the term ''illegal'' to identify undocumented immigrants, among other reporting standards. At the time of the interview, Ms. Lizarraga was a freelance journalist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Farina King Interview
No full textDr. Farina King was interviewed by Brett Fearer in the Oral History Studio of Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on March 12, 2022. Dr. King was born in Tó Naneesdizí (Tuba City), in the Navajo Nation. She is Bilagáanaa (Euro-American), born for Kinyaa'áanii (the Towering House Clan) of the Diné (Navajo). She lived in the Navajo Nation as a child until her family moved to Maryland in the Washington, D.C. area., where her father worked with the Indian Health Service. In her interview, Dr. King discusses her experiences as a member of the Diné and gives insight to topics of Indigenous identity, property, and sense of belonging. Dr. King was the David J. Weber Fellow with the Clements Center for Southwestern Studies from 2016-2017. While at SMU, she organized a public panel titled ''Why Standing Rock Matters'', to discuss the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline on Sioux lands. At the time of the interview, Dr. King worked as a professor of Indigenous history and Indigenous studies at Northeastern State University
