Dorthy Lukens Interview
No full textDorthy Lukens (JD 2022) was interviewed by Princess Igwe-Icho via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software. Mrs. Lukens was born on September 27th, 1985 in Saginaw, Michigan. She grew up there with her parents, aunt, uncle, six siblings, and four cousins. After graduating from Central Michigan University she moved to Texas and began her career in human resources. Mrs. Lukens enrolled in the Dedman School of Law after working with an attorney for the company she was with at the time and realizing that she was doing many of the same things as the attorney. During her interview, she explained how her childhood and involvement in the Bridge Center for Racial Equality as a teenager led her to where she is now. She also discussed her current family and her experiences studying law as a Black woman, both in general and in the context of the COVID pandemic and death of George Floyd. In addition, Mrs. Lukens explained how the Black Law Students Association and Dean Erika Fadel, among others, supported her during her time at SMU and stressed the importance of support for students of color, especially in the legal field
Kennedy Coleman Interview
No full textKennedy Coleman (Class of 2023) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez in the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions on February 17, 2023. She majored in Political Science and English, and continued on to law school after obtaining her BA. Coleman was born in Dallas, Texas in 2000, and attended Elementary School at what is now Mockingbird Elementary. She grew up with her mother and younger sister, and through her grandmother they have strong ties to Trinidad. Coleman maintains a strong relationship with her high school mentor, Mrs. Nina Gates, and credits multiple teachers with being a positive influence on her and guiding her in her academic journey. Kennedy was reluctant to attend SMU due to longstanding perceptions about the campus, but received a significant scholarship that helped to change her mind. She began classes in the fall of 2019 and received support from the Rotunda Scholars and the Association of Black Students. Coleman went on to discuss her very busy social and academic journey, as well as the community she built with fellow students. Her involvements include, but are not limited to: freshman liaison for the Association of Black Students (ABS) and getting runner-up for Homecoming along with her running-mate, Matthew Merritt. She talks about Professor Diana Newton and Dr. Jennifer ''JJ'' Jones specifically as mentors who supported her throughout her time at SMU. She also talks about her involvement with the Black Unity Forum after the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and how she learned to use her voice for positive social change, as well as the importance of collaboration and mentorship from older community members. She expressed that she sees her life as limitless, and would like to become a criminal attorney or pursue work taking on equity initiatives
Nadia Armstrong Interview
No full textNadia Armstrong (Class of 2022) was interviewed by Michelle Ma via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on July 29, 2023. Ms. Armstrong was born in Houston, TX, on July 4, 2001. She discussed growing up in Houston surrounded by her extended family, and the diversity of her middle school and high school. She applied to SMU after learning about it from her aunt. She knew that SMU was a PWI, but did not realize how wealthy many of the students are and the lack of diversity in Highland Park, which created a culture shock. She participated in Connect as a mentee her freshman year and a mentor her junior year, and was involved in many Black campus organizations, including the Association of Black Students, Fro, Sisters Supporting Sisters, and Alpha Kappa Alpha. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was largely unable to participate as more than a general member. She changed her major from biochemistry to psychology the first week of her freshman year after her first Introduction to Psychology class. She graduated a semester early with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a minor in neuroscience. During her undergraduate years, she felt supported by her professors but ignored by the white student population. She spoke appreciatively of the Black community she built around herself. Ms. Armstrong is currently working as a research assistant studying psychosis and schizophrenia at Vanderbilt University and plans to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology

Tan's journey from SMU graduate in '98 to a global pastor and advocate showcases the power of education and personal growth. Born in the Philippines, his family moved to Texas when he was five, where he navigated the challenge of assimilating into U.S. culture while preserving his own. Choosing SMU over Ivy League schools due to family ties, Tan excelled academically. His involvement in SMU's Asian community, from the Asian Council to being a homecoming court runner-up, highlighted the importance of representation and unity. After a stint at Deloitte, a spiritual calling led him to theology and pastoral work, leading him into a mission of global impact. Today, he travels across Asia and Europe, advocating for various causes and collaborating with NGOs. His experiences at SMU laid the foundation for his commitment to education, personal growth, and their potential for transformative change

Ms. Tran embarked on a journey driven by her passion for biological science and health in society. Raised in Dallas, Texas, of Vietnamese heritage, her path began in a diverse Carrollton high school, marked by intense academic focus and scholarship pursuit. Choosing SMU for its proximity to home, Ms. Tran's college experience became a profound cultural awakening. As a first-generation student, she grappled with unique challenges, further compounded by starting college amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms. Tran found her anchor in the Asian Council, becoming its president during a turbulent period of global upheaval and rising anti-Asian sentiment. Despite hardships, her leadership made a lasting impact, culminating in a well-deserved break post-graduation, with plans for graduate school and a commitment to saving for the future. Ms. Tran's journey exemplifies resilience and a dedication to making a positive impact

Mr. Nguyen discusses his Vietnamese background and the diverse community he grew up in around the Dallas area, including Garland and Wylie, Texas. Promising his mother he would finish college, Mr. Nguyen applied to Southern Methodist University after completing his associate degree at community college. Citing no particular reason for choosing SMU, Mr. Nguyen enjoyed his time at SMU, but remained focused on his Youtube channel and music career. Upon graduating, he continues to work on his music career, which has him relocating to Nashville, Tennessee at the end of 2023
