No full textDomnik Cobos (MA 2022) was interviewed by Princess Igwe-Icho in the Oral History Studio in Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on February 20, 2023. He discusses his childhood, family, culture, and education, and talks about growing up in a Latino neighborhood with his large Mexican family. He shares his experiences of walking to school with his brothers, spending time outdoors, and playing sports. Mr. Cobos also talks about the culture of his family, where family comes first, and hard work is emphasized. He describes his experiences of being mixed and having a white mother. He shares how his conflicted feelings about working as a drilling fluids engineer for an oil and gas company led to his interest in combating climate change. He transitioned to teaching, then decided to pursue his master’s degree. No full textStephanie Ikediobi (P.M.B.A. Class 87, 2022) was interviewed by Ruchi Ranganathan in the Oral History Recording Studio in Fondren Library. Ms. Ikediobi was born in Houston where she lived with her family. Despite moving around during her childhood, she retained close roots to the city. She attended a public high school in the suburbs of Houston before deciding to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in biology. Ms. Ikediobi then briefly attended a graduate program in biology before realizing her passion no longer laid with the research component of the health sciences. She then decided to attend Southern Methodist University for her MBA with a concentration in Accounting and Management. She maintained close relations with her cohort following her graduation as well as with mentors she found in the program and hoped to return to campus as an adjunct professor. Following her graduation, she took a position as a Recruitment Coordinator with Korn Ferry. During her interview, she discussed the challenges that graduate school presented, in addition to her experiences as a female minority in the MBA program at a notorious PWI. She described her involvement with programs and attempts to drive conversations about diversity and inclusion while at SMU, and how to include those practices in curriculum
Ahmed Rahat Interview
No full textAhmed Rahat (Class of 2021) was interviewed by Michelle Ma via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on August 10, 2023. He received Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics, English, Statistics, and Economics. Mr. Rahat was originally born in Arlington, Texas, but spent his childhood in Fort Worth before eventually moving to Irving where he attended high school. Growing up, religion and family played a huge role on Mr. Rahat’s life, and it would continue to do so when he decided to attend SMU. At SMU, Mr. Rahat spent the majority of his time in the Muslim Student Association, which eventually became his community. Originally, Mr. Rahat planned to be a pre-med and pre-law student, but he was unable to complete both tracks on time. Instead, Mr. Rahat switched over to mathematics and started adding different majors based on what he liked. His greatest success at SMU was graduating with four majors, and he credits his success to God, his mother, and the professors who mentored him along the way. During the interview, Mr. Rahat comments on what can be improved for Muslim students at SMU, such as having more accommodating dining options and classroom policies during Ramadan. At time of recording, Mr. Rahat now works in the finance industry and resides in New York as an equity researcher. In the future, he hopes to one day move back to Dallas and live a fulfilling life
