No full textBennet & McLaren Store and Diamond Gallery on Front Street in Marietta, early photograph with people on street. Marietta College Special Collections owns a postcard print of this image that indicates the original photograph was taken ca. 1875 on Front Street, and that the man in the center, between the doors, is Peter McLaren. An advertisement in "The Marietta Register", August 15, 1872, states that W.P. Bennet and Peter McLaren's Diamond Gallery was located on the first floor, opposite the post office.
Various sources indicate that William P. Bennet was the photographer and Peter McLaren owned the building and a share in the business. The photo gallery was opened in 1872 and the building was destroyed in the Flood of 1884. Bennet committed suicide by drowning in the Muskingum River in 1911, at the age of 92
