Understanding massive youth unemployment during the EU sovereign debt crisis: a configurational study
No full textAfter the economic downturn of 2008, youth unemployment rose rapidly in the EU.
Simultaneously, many countries were also facing increasing public defcits. In this
context, the EU developed a set of policies to tackle youth unemployment and public debt. While policies to fght unemployment were underpinned by the concept of
social investment, austerity was seen as the best way to reduce public debt. These
diferent approaches to the crisis led to a growing tension between the two policy
areas. This problem was particularly visible in the countries most afected by the
sovereign debt crisis where youth unemployment remained very high for a long
period of time. Not only were countries with high public debt and low growth unable
to invest sufciently in active labour market policies (ALMPs), but also, at the same
time, austerity policies depressed the economic activity. This study uses the fsQCA
methodology. Our results point to the existence of one necessary condition for high
youth unemployment—low expenditure on ALMPs. The analysis of sufcient conditions points to the existence of one confguration: the countries most afected by
the sovereign debt crisis and characterized by having a demand-led growth model,
combined a low GDP growth with a low expenditure on ALMPs. Together, this led
to high levels of youth unemployment

No full textIn einem dreiteiligen Beitrag befassen sich Eva Nachtschatt, Viviane Schachler und Mario Schreiner mit den Neuerungen der Werkstätten-Mitwirkungsverordnung (WMVO). Der vorliegende dritte Beitragsteil wirft einen rechtssoziologischen Blick auf die tatsächliche Inanspruchnahme der WMVO als angewandtes Recht in den Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen.
Mit der Annahme, dass sich die rechtlichen Neuerungen mit dem BTHG nicht voraussetzungslos vollziehen, sondern an bestimmte Rahmenbedingungen gebunden sind, identifizieren die Verfasser/innen Komponenten, die für eine Anwendung der Partizipationsrechte durch die Werkstattbeschäftigten zentral sind. Im Vordergrund stehen hier vor allem die Rolle der Vermittlungsstellen, die Finanzierung der Werkstatträte sowie die Implementierung der Frauenbeauftragten. Wie abschließend resümiert wird, ist eine weitere wissenschaftliche Begleitung der Reformumsetzung der WMVO unabdingbar, um etwaige Handlungsbedarfe für die Rechtsmobilisierung aufzuzeigen und eine echte Mitbestimmung sowie Interessenvertretung der Werkstattbeschäftigten zu ermöglichen
HedgewarsSGC: a competitive shared game control setting
No full textSharing game control (SGC) is a multiplayer context that is considered within games user research. With the popular Twitch Plays Pokémon, settings of this type have also received broad media attention. In this paper, we introduce and describe HedgewarsSGC, our modifications to the open-source game Hedgewars to investigate different player roles in this shared game control context: besides considering competing groups who share control over their units via input aggregators, it also provides options for spectators that do not want to give up individual control. Thus, HedgewarsSGC is an approach to investigate SGC in such a scenario and additionally, allows further reasoning about input aggregation
Germ Destroyer: a gamified system to increase the hand washing duration in shared bathrooms
No full textWashing hands is important for public health as it prevents spreading germs to other people. One of the most important factors in cleaning hands is the hand washing duration. However, people mostly do not wash their hands for a long enough time leading to infections and diseases for themselves and others. To counter this, we present "Germ Destroyer", a system consisting of a sensing device which can be mounted on the water tap and a mobile application providing gameful feedback to encourage users to meet the recommended duration. In the mobile application, users kill germs and collect points by washing their hands. Through a laboratory study (N=14) and a 10-day in-the-wild study (363 hand washing sessions), we found that Germ Destroyer enhances the enjoyment of hand washing, reduces the perceived hand washing duration, almost doubles the actual hand washing duration, and has the potential to reduce the risk of infection
