International audienceIn both French and Italian primary schools, the teaching of scientific subjects is of-ten overlooked by teachers, often coming from humanistic disciplines, who com-plain of their inadequate preparation. In this article we present the FoCoSTEP (For-mation Collaborative en Sciences et Technologie à l’École Primaire), an innovativetraining method whose main aim is to improve the teaching of science and tech-nology in primary schools. This method, developed at the École Supérieure du Pro-fessorat et de l’Éducation (ESPE - Higher School of Teaching and Education) of theFrench University of Reunion Island, is based on the collaboration between futureteachers, university instructors and ESPE university professors of scientific subjects. An experiment of using a sort of “contamination” between physics experimentsand narration in primary teaching is also briefly illustrated.
Phylogeography and taxonomy of the blue-spotted maskray (ex-Neotrygon kuhlii; ikan pari totol biru) : the intricate story of a widespread species complex. Seminar, LIPI Research Center on Oceanography, Ancol on 19 October 2018
Borsa P., Arlyza I.S. (2018) Phylogeography and taxonomy of the blue-spotted maskray (ex-Neotrygon kuhlii; ikan paritotol biru): the intricate story of a widespread species complex. Seminar, LIPI Research Center on Oceanography, Ancol on 19 October 2018. LIPI-RCO Seminar Series no. 35, 53 p.The blue spotted maskray was once thought to be a single species widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea to Fiji and from southern Japan to New South Wales. Genetics have shown that it actually consists of at least 12 distinct lineages with parapatric distribution. The available phylogenies suggest that the evolutionary origin of the species complex lies in the southwestern Pacific in the Miocene (between 5 and 23 million years ago). The blue-spotted maskray progressively colonized the Indo-West Pacific from the East to the West-The lineages in the western Coral Triangle and the Indian Ocean are the most recently evolved. The taxonomy of the blue-spotted maskray species complex is still an unfinished job, of which a detailed chronological account will be presented. Major but neglected contributions to the early stages of the taxonomic work on N. kuhlii were from French naturalist Jean-Rene Constant Quoy in 1828 and from Japanese artist Kawahara Keiga around 1830. Genetics led to a complete taxonomic reshuffle, starting with the pioneering DNA barcoding work of Australian geneticist Bob Ward in 2008, followed by acrimonious competition between traditional taxonomists and molecular geneticists. For nearly two centuries, the taxonomy of the species complex has been marked by neglect, confusion, and error

Cryptic diversity, low connectivity and suspected human-mediated dispersal among 17 widespread Indo-Pacific hydroid species of the south-western Indian Ocean
International audienceAimTo investigate whether the populations of 17 widespread hydroid species are connected on a demographic level (one to few generations) or are mostly connected on evolutionary timescales.LocationCoral reefs of the South‐western Indian Ocean.Taxon17 widespread hydroid species (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa).MethodsUsing mitochondrial (16S) and nuclear (Calmodulin) sequences, we analysed 17 co‐distributed hydroid species with contrasting life history traits (with or without a pelagic life history phase). We used DNA‐based species delimitation methods, haplotype networks, analysis of molecular variance, and Bayesian skyline plots to investigate diversification and connectivity patterns in the region.ResultsPutative cryptic species were revealed in half of the species and the 17 species resulted in 54 cryptic lineages. The high isolation of hydroid populations in the region is underlined by the rarity of shared haplotypes among localities in most of the species studied. In contrast, haplotypes shared between specimens collected in different ocean basins were found in three species and suggest recent introductions via human activities. The presence of a short pelagic dispersal phase did not seem to increase the connectivity levels of the studied populations, as no significant differences in genetic structure were detected between species with contrasting life history traits.Main conclusionsThese results highlight once again our incomplete knowledge of the marine invertebrate fauna, as we might be underestimating hydroid diversity by two‐thirds, and are discussed in terms of diversification processes, dynamics of the Indo‐Pacific biodiversity and the role of its peripheral marine provinces
Rheological behavior of hybrid suspensions of chitin nanorods and siloxane oligomers
International audiencePolysaccharide nanocrystals (chitin, cellulose) extracted from biomass are increasingly considered as templates to produce hierarchical anisotropic features in inorganic phases. The organization of nanostructured solids obtained after sol-gel processing results from the complex combination of van der Waals and electrostatic interactions as well as excluded volume effects. Here, we investigate the rheological behavior of colloidal suspensions of chitin nanorods and siloxane oligomers in ethanol. The effects of solvothermal treatments and hydrophobized oligomers were also studied to decipher the respective role of inter-particle colloidal interactions. We demonstrate that interactions between chitin nanorods are strongly affected by the presence of siloxane oligomers. In agreement with previous works, the rheological data confirm the association of the small colloidal siloxane oligomers with the chitin surface. This knowledge is key information to further control the localization of functions in the resulting materials (nanocomposites, catalysts)
