ARMHEx: a framework for efficient DIFT in real-world SoCs
International audienceSecurity in embedded systems remains a major concern. Untrustworthy authorities use a wide range of software attacks. This demo introduces ARMHEx, a practical solution targeting DIFT (Dynamic Information Flow Tracking) implementations on ARM-based SoCs. DIFT is a solution that consists in tracking the dissemination of data inside the system and allows to enforce some security properties. In this demo, we show an implementation of ARMHEx on Xilinx Zynq SoC. Especially, we show how the required information for DIFT is recovered with the help of traces produced by CoreSight components, static analysis and instrumentation
ARMHEx: embedded security through hardware-enhanced information flow tracking
National audienceSecurity in embedded systems is a major concern for several years. Untrustworthy authorities use a wide range of both hardware and software attacks. This paper introduces ARMHEx, a practical solution targeting DIFT (Dynamic Information Flow Tracking) implementations on ARM-based SoCs. DIFT is a solution that consists in tracking the dissemination of data inside the system and permit to ensure some security properties. Existing DIFT solutions are either hardly portable to SoCs or bring unsuitable time overheads. ARMHEx overcomes both issues using modern debugging CPU features, along with a coprocessor implemented in FPGA logic. This work demonstrates how ARMHEx performs DIFT with negligible communication costs opening interesting perspectives in the context of reconfigurability and hardware-enhanced security for multiprocessor architectures
Hexahedral Meshing: Mind the Gap!
This article introduces a method to generate a hex-dominant mesh from an input tet mesh. We first compute a global parameterization, then we isolate the ``void'' (also called ``gap'' or ``cavity''), that is the zone where the global parameterization is singular or too much distorted. Once properly isolated, the void can be meshed with different algorithms. Thus, our main technical contribution is an algorithm that computes the boundary of the void and makes it compatible with both the hexahedra generated in the regular part of the parameterization and the input boundary. We tested our method on a large collection of objects (200+) with different settings. In most cases, we obtained very good quality results compared to the state-of-the-art solutions. In addition to improving the state-of-the-art in hex-dominant meshing, a second contribution of this work is to introduce a pipeline architecture, which can be used to compare present and future algorithms involved in the different steps of the pipeline (frame field generation, global parameterization), for which no objective benchmark currently exists. To ease reproducing our results and benchmarking algorithms, we provide a C++ implementation of the pipeline in the supplemental materials
The organisational complexity implied by New Product Development (NPD) within the industry, is often induced by the complex nature of the products themselves. In this context, MBSE (Model Based Systems Engineering) and collaborative approaches address those complexities and have been recognised by their contribution to improve the NPD processes. A successful implementation of a collaborative MBSE design would allow to manage both complexities. This PhD thesis describes an investigation on collaborative MBSE design projects within French teams in automotive and aeronautics companies, with the purpose of enhancing them to improve product development. We understand collaborative MBSE design as a complex organisational system which implies different views or dimensions. The identification of those dimensions, their definition and the study of their interactions constitute the first objective of this research. Understanding each dimension in order to improve collaboration between the project members is the second objectivedeuxième objectif. The third and last objective of this research is to propose Socio Technical Systems (STS) supporting this collaboration. The results of the thesis provide a methodology to manage organisational complexity in collaborative MBSE design projects. The methodology is a combination of four methods assisting the characterisation of the MBSE dimensions (people, process, information objects and tools), while defining their interactions. These methods support respectively: 1) The assessment and description of collaborative MBSE design projects from a systemic perspective 2) The establishment of a shared vision of the work 3) The analysis of the cooperation among the actors 4) The development of STS such as collaborative environment and a collaborative capitalisation support. The implementation of the proposed methods, process and guidelines in the industry has shown how the enhancement of collaboration in MBSE design projects can improve the overall product development.
Anticipatory models of human movements and dynamics: the roadmap of the AnDy project
International audienceFuture robots will need more and more anticipation capabilities, to properly react to human actions and provide efficient collaboration. To achieve this goal, we need new technologies that not only estimate the motion of the humans, but that fully describe the whole-body dynamics of the interaction and that can also predict its outcome. These hardware and software technologies are the goal of the European project AnDy. In this paper, we describe the roadmap of AnDy, which leverages existing technologies to endow robots with the ability to control physical collaboration through intentional interaction. To achieve this goal, AnDy relies on three technological and scientific breakthroughs. First, AnDy will innovate the way of measuring human whole-body motions by developing the wearable AnDySuit, which tracks motions and records forces. Second, AnDy will develop the AnDyModel, which combines ergonomic models with cognitive predictive models of human dynamic behavior in collaborative tasks, learned from data acquired with the AnDySuit. Third, AnDy will propose AnDyControl, an innovative technology for assisting humans through pre-dictive physical control, based on AnDyModel. By measuring and modeling human whole-body dynamics, AnDy will provide robots with a new level of awareness about human intentions and ergonomy. By incorporating this awareness on-line in the robot's controllers, AnDy paves the way for novel applications of physical human-robot collaboration in manufacturing, health-care, and assisted living
An M-estimator for the long-memory parameter
This paper proposes an M-estimator for the fractional parameter of stationary long-range dependent processes as an alternative to the classical GPH (Geweke and Porter-Hudak, 1983) method. Under very general assumptions on the long-range dependent process the consistency and the asymptotic normal distribution are established for the proposed method. One of the main results is that the convergence rate of the M-estimator is N-beta/2, for some positive beta, which is the same rate as the standard GPH estimator. The asymptotic properties of the M-estimation method is investigated through Monte-Carlo simulations under the scenarios of ARFIMA models using contaminated with additive outliers and outlier-free data. The GPH approach is also considered in the study for comparison purposes, since this method is widely used in the literature of long-memory time series. The empirical investigation shows that M and GPH-estimator methods display standardized densities fairly close to the standard Gaussian density in the context of non-contaminated data. On the other hand, in the presence of additive outliers, the M-estimator remains unaffected with the presence of additive outliers while the GPH is totally corrupted, which was an expected performance of this estimator. Therefore, the M-estimator here proposed becomes an alternative method to estimate the long-memory parameter when dealing with long-memory time series with and without outliers

On-demand ecology-inspired spectrum allocation mechanism for heterogeneous cognitive radio networks
International audienceAs increasing number of cognitive radio network (CRN) standards are developed in TV White Spaces band with incompatible communication patterns, heterogeneous CRNs coexistence problem could not be avoided. However, most solutions on this problem have not considered CRNs’ actual data transmission demands and weighted fairness simultaneously. Therefore, we would like to introduce a novel On-demand ecological Species Competition based HEterogeneous networks coexistence MEchanism (O-SCHEME) in this paper. Inspired by ecology species competition model, O-SCHEME utilizes an ecology based spectrum allocation mechanism for guaranteeing heterogeneous CRNs’ spectrum shares weighted fairness. And by employing CRNs’ communication spectrum requirement constraints, actual data transmission needs could be satisfied without wasted communication resources. Through both theoretical and simulation analyses, we demonstrate that O-SCHEME can achieve stable and fair spectrum allocations among coexisting networks with high communication efficiency
This thesis studies the mechanical behavior of a 0.2C-5Mn-2.5Al Medium Mn steel that exhibits a very high degree of work hardening due to transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) during plastic deformation. During TRIP, paramagnetic retained austenite is transformed to ferromagnetic martensite with the application of plastic strain and generates a significant amount of work hardening. The rate of work hardening is seen to vary greatly depending on processing parameters—notably the intercritical annealing temperature. These steels also often deform heterogeneously through the propagation of Lüders or PLC strain bands. This research develops a method to characterize the kinetics of the TRIP effect through measurements of the samples magnetic properties. The method is novel in that it is performed in-situ with no effect on the tensile test and is able to correct for the effects of the applied stress on the magnetic properties. The results of these experiments were compared to characterizations of the strain bands to demonstrate that TRIP coincides with the passage of a Lüders or PLC band. The strain rate sensitivity of the steels is analyzed and the presence and type of PLC bands are characterized with respect to the transformation kinetics.
