Experimental Study on the Characteristics and Permeability Behavior of a Single Fracture in Triassic mudstones of the Kiwada Mine, Western Japan
Fracture geometry in the rock is a key factor for assessing mechanical stability and fluid flow in underground envi
ronments. While previous studies focused on mining and tunnel excavation, recent developments in underground energy
storage and waste disposal have emphasized the need for long-term stability. Fluid migration in the fractures is influenced
by aperture width, which depends on confining pressure. This study measured the aperture of Triassic mudstone frac
tures using 3D point cloud data and compared these results with permeability tests. As a result, the analysis of fracture
aperture distribution using 3D point cloud data showed a similar trend to the aperture determined from experiments.
Additionally, pyrite, a secondary mineral, was found on fracture surfaces where the aperture did not significantly change
under confining pressure, thereby preventing the closure of the fracture.departmental bulletin pape
