Trends and Developments in Broadway Productions Reflecting Contemporary American Society: Forms of Diversity and Gender in the 2023 Tony Award Winning Productions
At the 76th Annual Tony Awards, held on June 11, 2023, the awards trends were more diverse and inclusive than in recent years. In the Best Musical category, Kimberly Akimbo (2022), starring a 63-year-old actress as a teenager with an incurable disease that causes her to age four to five times faster than normal, received multiple nominations, including Best Actress for her portrayal. The musical version of Some Like It Hot (2022), nominated in 13 categories, brought the 1959 film version starring Marilyn Monroe back to life in the modern age with a new production featuring non-binary actors. Another controversial action was that of the actor in & Juliet, who declined to be nominated in protest of having only male and female categories. The award for Best Play went to Tom Stoppardʼs Leopoldstadt (2020), which chronicles four generations of a Jewish family over the first 50 years of the 20th century. The Best Musical Revival was awarded to Parade, the true story of a Jewish man wrongfully accused and convicted of murdering a 13-year-old girl in 1913. The Best Theatrical Revival Award went to African American playwright Suzan-Lori Parksʼ TopDog/Underdog, which explores the complex relationship between black siblings and the deep roots of racism. Awards honored many productions that reflected gender diversity and social messages, suggesting a new direction for Broadway. The Tony Awards selection process evaluates not only on profitability, but also on the cultural depth and social significance of a production. By selecting works that have a cultural impact from a long-term perspective, and not just those that are short-term trends or profitable, the Tony Awards open up new possibilities in the world of theater, and in turn, promote diversity and creativity in society. This essay will examine the development of diversity in contemporary American society as seen in the works and casting trends of the 2023 Tony Award winners, with a focus on Kimberly Akimbo, Some Like It Hot, and & Juliet.departmental bulletin pape
