“Kodomo” or “Koromo”? Realizations of /d/ by Thai and Vietnamese Learners of Japanese

    Get PDF
The present study examines the phonetic realizations of /d/ in kodomo (/kodomo/) produced by Thai and Vietnamese learners of Japanese, and compares them with those produced by native speakers of Japanese. Previous research suggests that native Japanese speakers sometimes perceive the word kodomo ʻchildʼ as koromo ʻclothingʼ or ʻbatterʼ when it is pronounced by Thai and Vietnamese learners. Using a learner corpus, this study compares the closure duration and the F3 transition of the /d/ sounds among the three groups of Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese. The results indicate that the learners produced [d], [ɾ], [ɖ] and [ɽ] as realizations of /d/. The short closure duration ([ɾ] and [ɽ]) and the lowering F3 frequency ([ɖ] and [ɽ]) can contribute to the perception of kodomo as koromo. The present research aims to contribute to the advancement of Japanese language education by proposing a set of training instructions for learners to consistently pronounce [d], and to educate native Japanese speakers about learnersʼ pronunciation tendencies to help them to accurately identify /d/ sounds pronounced by learners.departmental bulletin pape
