This paper summarizes the research results of the 2015 Nihon University comprehensive research project: Nihon University Eel Plant research. The author conducted field surveys many times in China, the world’s largest eel farming site between 2015 - 2019. By visiting the eel farms and processing factories in Guangdong Province, including Shunde and Taishan which is the largest Anguilla japonica eel (A. japonica eel or Japanese eel ) farming site, author analyzed the information regarding the situation of the farming, the processing, distribution and consumption of Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica). Author also classified the ell species of surveyed farmed eels using DNA analysis. In this study, eel farming was prevalent in regions as mentioned above in China. As a result of DNA analysis, there were three main eel species: A. japonica, A. anguilla (European eel ) and A. rostrata (American eel ). A. anguilla and A. rostrata were recognized at widely areas of China, whereas most of A. japonica was only found in Japanese chain supermarket. In order to control the decline in eel stocks, it is necessary to understand the status of eel farming at East Asia including China in the future.departmental bulletin pape
