    Benjamin and Marie discuss the role of cultural groups in Washington prisons, specifically among Native Americans and among Black Americans. They discuss the work of these cultural groups in fostering education, empowerment, and mutual aid among incarcerated people, as well as connections to family, cultural heritage, and outside supporters. The discussion explores the differences between them as indigenous people’s religious rites are protected by the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, whereas other cultural groups have no such protection.     Travis ComesLast discusses his experience being incarcerated at Airway Heights Corrections Center in Airway Heights, Washington, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2023. Travis describes how the Washington State Department of Corrections’ policies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in prisons drastically impacted his access to basic necessities like showers, medical care, and time outdoors, as well as his ability to communicate with his loved ones and participate in programming and education. He also discusses his months long stay in the facility’s makeshift quarantine accommodations in the gym. Throughout his incarceration, Travis has dedicated himself to counseling others through addiction, and he comments on how the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to substance use and addiction in prison
