"Anonymous" interview
No full text"Anonymous" was born in Leicester in the United Kingdom and was raised in a fairly observant Jewish household. Their father held Sephardi ancestry while their mother was an Orthodox Jewish convert. They attended Corpus Christi College in Oxford where they studied classics and literary humanities in the late 1970s. They went on to complete an MBA, a psychology BSC and an MA in history. They are currently working on their PhD in history focused on the emotional and psychological experiences of British, French and Portuguese soldiers fighting late colonial wars in the 1950s, 60s and early 70s. "Anonymous" is retired but spent much of their career working in marketing and fundraising for charity organizations. "Anonymous" speaks English, French and a little Spanish and Portuguese. They received Portuguese citizenship and passport."Anonymous" descibes their childhood upbringing and academic background in the United Kingdom. They discuss growing up Jewish and awareness of being Sephardic within a community that was predominantly Ashkenazi in origin (00:04:20). "Anonymous" explains their father's Sephardic origins and family migration from Turkey to Germany to the United Kingdom (00:07:27). They recall learning about Sephardic ancestry through stories, language and food (00:11:00) and tracing family heritage through documentation back to Turkey in 1780 (00:15:20). Discussion about learning of the citizenship option, the impact of the Brexit referendum result in 2016, and initial process of assembling documentation (00:18:55). "Anonymous" describes hiring a lawyer, securing a letter from a rabbi in Leicester (00:26:52), and challenges of the application process (00:30:03). Thoughts on how research has amplified feelings of Sephardic identity (00:32:17) and Portugal's gesture of a "right of return"(00:36:50). "Anonymous" concludes discussing the delicate nature and various forms of reparations and reconciliation and being impressed with Spain and Portugal's offering of this opportunity (00:53:59).Topics presented in order of discussion on recording:
