Howard McMurdie discusses his 38 year career at NBS. He arrived in 1928 and began work in the Lime and Gypsum Section. Mc Murdie recalls his work in x-ray diffraction, dry cells, jewel bearings, phase equilibria and Portland cement. McMurdie also talks about his research in the Glass Section making synthetic quartz, and his work in the Polymer Division investigating various rubbers and wool fibers. At the end of the interview McMurdie discusses the work of Weir and Van Valhenburg and the history of the diamond cell. Image evaluation of the high resolution VUV spectrometer at SURF II by ray tracing
A high resolution VUV spectroscopic facility has been in use for several years at SURF II, the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. At this facility, a combination of three cylindrical mirrors is utilized to focus the light originating in the storage ring onto the horizontal entrance slit of the spectrometer. The spectrometer uses a 6.65 m concave grating having a groove density of 4800 lines/mm in the off-plane Eagle mounting. In preparation for the installation of an array detector in the exit image plane, a ray tracing program has been formulated and spot diagrams have been constructed by plotting the coordinates of the points of intersection of the diffracted rays with the image plane, which is tangent to the Rowland circle. In creating the spot diagrams, we have considered both parallel and tilted configurations of the entrance slit with respect to the grating grooves. It is shown that the line widths of the spectral images can be reduced when the entrance slit is properly tilted. Finally, we have estimated the spectral widths of the images when they are recorded on an array detector placed tangent to the Rowland circle. We conclude that an image spectral width of 0.41 pm to 0.88 pm in first order can be achieved over the wavelength region of 40 nm to 120 nm

February 11, 1998 - Maryilyn Jacox begins her discussion with her early interest in science, her education in chemistry and physics, her teaching position at the Mellon Institute and her 15 year collaboration with Dick Milligan. She also recalls her work in free radicals at NBS/NIST (including F-atom reactions in solids and H-atom detachment and acetylene), her mandate to build a laboratory in 1962 upon her arrival at NBS, the Arturim Leonardi Prize which she shared with Dick Milligan, and the Infrared Spectroscopy Glidden Conference.
February 18, 1998 - Marilyn Jacox discussses the many awards she received in her NBS/NIST career. The awards include: Utica College Outstanding Alumnus Award, Physical Sciences Award from the Washington Academy of Sciences, the Department of Commerce Gold Medal Award, the Federal Woman's Award, the Stratton Award (with Dick Milligan) for ion studies, the Lippincott Award, The Hillebrand Prize of the Chemical Society of Washington, the WISE Lifetime Achievement Award (which requires the recepient to do something of sustained importance to the status of women), the Syracuse University honorary ScD. Marilyn also talks about the changes she observed in the organizational structure of NBS/NIST during her career. Can a pressure standard be based on capacitance measurements?
We consider the feasibility of basing a pressure standard on measurements of the dielectric constant epsilon and the thermodynamic temperature T of helium near 0 degrees C. The pressure p of the helium would be calculated from fundamental constants, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics. At present, the relative standard uncertainty of the pressure u(r)(p) would exceed 20 x 10(-6), the relative uncertainty of the value of the molar polarizability of helium A(epsilon) calculated ab initio. If the relativistic corrections to A(epsilon) were calculated as accurately as the classical value is now known, a capacitance-based pressure standard might attain u(r)(p)< 6 x 10(-6) for pressures near 1 MPa, a result of considerable interest for pressure metrology. One obtains p by eliminating the density from the virial expansions for p and epsilon - 1. If epsilon - 1 were measured with a very stable, 0.5 pF toroidal cross capacitor, the small capacitance and the small values of epsilon - 1 would require state-of-the-art capacitance measurements to achieve a useful pressure standard
