Bivariate Fay-Herriot Models with Application to Thai Socio-Economic Data

    No full text
Welfare information is very important for policy makers and the government in order to improve the nation economic status. Most common welfare indicators widely used are expenditure and income. In practice, studying the two indicators separately could lead to different conclusions. Accordingly, to have precise viewpoints of the nation economic status, the two measurements should be simultaneously studied via a bivariate model. One of well-known models used in small area is the Fay-Herriot model. However, standard variance component estimation methods for the Fay-Herriot model frequently produce zero estimate of the strictly positive model variance. Therefore, Li and Lahiri proposed an adjusted method to prevent zero estimate of model variance for the univariate Fay-Herriot model. In this paper, we extend their technique to obtain an adjusted likelihood estimate for a bivariate Fay-Herriot model and apply the method to estimate income and expenditure in Thailand. In our study, simulation study is carried out to investigate the performance of our adjusted method comparing with the original profile likelihood method. The simulation results suggest that our adjusted profile likelihood estimates prevent zero estimates and outperform the profile likelihood estimates. Consequently, an empirical study is performed for the Thai income and expenditure welfare measurements using data from the 2017 Thailand Household Socio-Economic Survey (SES 2017) and the 2010 Thailand Population and Housing Census. Avoidance Factors in Seeking Counselling Help by High School Students in Bhutan

    No full text
Adolescents are vulnerable to arrays of physical and mental problems, and some of them can have lasting consequences in their life. Embracing these concerns, Bhutan started counselling services in schools to curtail them as students inevitably confront them. Though schools hold a significant pool of adolescents and juveniles with various problems, many students do not seek counselling. Moreover, there is a scarcity of studies to comprehend the avoidance factors in seeking counselling by students in Bhutan. Thus, factors for not availing counselling by high school students were explored in this study. Total of 248 high school students was sampled using Yamane’s formula and proportionate random sampling. Self-administered interview schedules were employed to collect data in September 2018 in Tendruk Central School, Samtse, Bhutan. Students experienced problems, including physical health (37.90%), mental health (37.50%), and academic (37.10%). Although more than half (53.63%) of the students showed a high interest in seeking counselling, only 17.34% of the students had received counselling. The top three avoidance factors were inadequate counselling rooms (1), feeling better about seeking help from a spiritual person rather than a school counsellor (2), and the fears of losing confidentiality by speaking to the counsellor (3). Students did not seek counselling services due to confidentiality fear. Therefore, the current results show that schools with similar settings need to ensure the availability and accessibility of secure counselling rooms. Counsellors further need to advocate students about counselling ethics and processes to gain their trust. Keywords: Adolescent, Avoidance Factors, Help-Seekin

    No full text
Research on the influence of loss ratio on the profitability of insurance companies has grown in importance. This study aims to investigate the influence of loss ratio on the profitability of non-life insurance companies and the moderating role of the type of companies. Fifty-two non-life insurance companies in Thailand were selected to collect the financial database for this study. Results from Ordinal Least Square (OLS) regression found significant negative relationships between loss ratio and the profitability of non-life insurance companies related to profitability, return on assets, return on equity, profit margin, and net profit margin. In addition, the type of company influenced its loss ratio and profitability. In terms of organizational implications, our findings would suggest that enhancing underwriting functions and risk management policies to reduce the chances of, and impacts from, future losses or claim payouts will improve a company’s profitability. In addition, balancing lines of insurance business will enhance and improve a company’s profitability as well. Keywords: Loss Ratio, Profitability, Non-Life Insurance Compan

Racism is one of the continually controversial issues in a society. Its victims suffer because of unequal distribution of resources, inequality in career chances, income, and access to opportunities. Therefore, studying about the effects of racism is the initial step to help readers understand and be more aware of it. This study focuses on the analysis of effects of three forms of racism: institutionalized, internalized, and intra-racial racisms, on the characters in a South African writer’s, Ezekiel Mphahlele’s, novel, Down Second Avenue (2011). This study aims to answer the question how the three forms of racism are reflected within the novel, through the characters and situations, by investigating an autobiographical novel written by a South African citizen who witnessed and experienced a series of racial discrimination himself. The data collection method of this study employs content and descriptive analysis as the instrument. The study applies the qualitative research methods to analyze and discuss the effects of the three forms of racism. The results of the analysis show that characters in the novel are most affected by and suffered from the consequences of institutionalized racism, internalized racism, and intra-racial racism, respectively. The study serves as guidelines in examining forms of racism reflected in other literary works and media contents. The study employed a mixed research methodology including a field study at Western Digital (Thailand) Company Limited, a survey based on questionnaires, and in-depth interviews with the company’s executives for information regarding the company’s rules, regulations and policies.      The results revealed that the company made a good use of the concept of “Happy Workplace” as a guideline for developing the employees’ well-being. The survey indicated that: 1) the employees lacked an understanding of basic health care; 2) some employees lacked emotional wellness due to life dissatisfaction; 3) some employees faced physical problems such as stress, exhaustion, and lack of sleep; and 4) some employees lacked an understanding of how religious principles could promote happiness at work.      The company’s format for developing the employees’ well-being was “MW Life Balance,” which means a life balance as a result of mindfulness and wisdom. M (for ‘Mindfulness’) refers to physical and mental well-being that requires mindfulness in nutritional consumption according to the principle of Pohchanaymatdtanyudtaa (The Moderation in Nutritional Consumption) and mindfulness in leading a sublime life according to the principle of Phromvihan 4 (The Four Sublime States of Mind). W (for ‘Wisdom’) refers to social and intellectual well-being that requires wisdom in social life according to the principle of Nathakarana-dharma 10 (The Ten Virtues for Protection) which helps strengthen moral self-reliance and wisdom at work according to the principle of Bala 5 (The Five Strengths) which is the power that creates strength and stability to distance oneself from idleness and carelessness at work. In addition, attitudes towards work must be adjusted based on the new science of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) which is related to individual development to attain achievement in life. NLP posits that humans’ emotional problems originate in the nervous system and a mental state that is incongruent with life’s goals. Life balance is the result of the balance in all life aspects namely, professional life, personal life, social life, family and health. This research aimed to examine the ecological footprint in the Nampong river basin, Nam Pong district, Khon Kaen province, Thailand. The data was derived from qualitative research. The focus group discussions with 29 formal community leaders in three sub-districts (three FGDs) were used, and in-depth interviews were applied to collect data from 30 key informants. FGDs guidelines and in-depth interview guidelines were the tools for data collection. The results presented that there were four aspects of the ecological footprint in the Nampong river basin: 1) food, 2) home, 3) good and services, and 4) transport. All aspects were utilized by natural resources such as land resource, water resource and forest resource. The land resource was mostly used for the agriculture, recognized as food aspect and goods and services aspect. Water resource and forest resource were natural food sources for the villagers, making some fish extinct from the poor water quality. This research increases awareness of natural resource utilization through ecological footprint aspects. The stakeholders in local policy level should empower the community participation in natural resource and environment management.
