The Performance of External Vertical Slats for Shading West Windows in Office Buildings
Get PDF In a hot climate region, the solar radiation transmitted into the building is very high throughout the year. This causes the consumption of electricity to be higher in terms of air-conditioning. The usages of shading devices are necessary to overcome the problem of glare and solar radiation. The uses of external vertical shading devices in west windows are more effective than horizontal shading devices because the sun is travelling overhead all the time.
In most office buildings, the heat reflective glasses (HR) are used to reduce the solar radiation. Therefore, this paper discusses the performance of external vertical slats with clear glass and compares the results obtained from the heat reflective glass window in west exposure. The daylighting performance was evaluated for both cases of using external vertical slats and HR in June and December to check variations. The results of the simulation showed that the application of external vertical slats always reduces energy consumption for three window to window ratio (0.3WWR, 0.6WWR and 0.9WWR) scenarios this is beneficial to the occupants. The results indicate that using the external vertical slats in the west façade achieving potential energy savings ranging between 16%– 52% less energy compared to heat reflective glass.

The Resistance and Negotiation on the Meaning of Nightlife Entertaining Girls
No full text The major goal of this study is to analyze and explore a reconstruction of the meaning of nightlife entertaining girls, in response to their portrayal as a “not-good lady” by Thai society’s myth. In this study, qualitative techniques were used in the data collection of twelve (12) key informants selected using snowball sampling. The inclusion criteria of prospective case studies participants are nightlife entertaining girls, 20-25 years of age, living and working around the five (5) lower northern provinces of Thailand (Phitsanulok, Phichit, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphangphet, and Sukhothai), who were willing to share their experiences for this study. The interpretative approach, content analysis, and data analysis techniques were employed in this research to understand the significance of peoples’ experiences under their sociocultural context. The findings were then presented by utilizing the narrative technique.
The research found that the resistance and negotiation of meaning were demonstrations of survival skills in order to negotiate with Thai society’s myth of patriarchy. Three significant patterns were revealed in this study: Firstly, the everyday resistance processes through exercising power over the body, especially having realized the charms of femininity-sex appeal and sexual lure were used to resist patriarchal power. Also, by taking advantage of the law’s loopholes such that playing the role of a lover and dating is too difficult to classify into criminal charges of prostitution. Secondly, the reconstruction of self-identity where entertaining girls need not think of their job’s negative image by considering themselves legal workers and that earning money for a living is more important. Lastly, having the ability to leverage their negotiation power to their clients through different forms of benefits, such as wages, tips, and gifts. Moreover, some of them maintain contracts with restaurants or pubs to bring in their clients - and with more money spent, more money is shared.

Theoretical Perspectives on the Determinants of Effective Community Participation in Development Programs
No full text The objective of this research is to highlight from the theoretical perspective the key determinants of effective community participation in development programs. Indeed, effective community participation in development programs is considered by many scholars and development practitioners as one of the ingredients for sustaining development programs. However, as a catalyst for programs sustainability, this paper makes a case that community participation can only serve its intended purpose of ensuring that development programs at the community level are sustainable only when a number of factors are well articulated and instituted or addressed. Based on this articulation, this paper employed a theoretical literature review approach to critically examine the determining factors for effective community participation in development programs from a theoretical point of view.

ผลการศึกษาการวิเคราะห์แนวคิดหุ้นส่วนทางสังคมในการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมขององค์กรสาธารณประโยชน์ โดยใช้ทฤษฎีวิพากษ์ สามารถวิเคราะห์ให้เห็นถึงบทบาทของแนวคิดหุ้นส่วนทางสังคมในการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมขององค์กรสาธารณประโยชน์ได้ในหลากหลายประเด็น แนวทางการเสริมสร้างความเข้มแข็งตามแนวคิดหุ้นส่วนทางสังคมในการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมขององค์กรสาธารณประโยชน์ เป็นการสร้างความร่วมมือ การต่างตอบแทน การควบคุม และการตรวจสอบระหว่างหน่วยงานภาครัฐและองค์กรสาธารณประโยชน์ ซึ่งการสร้างความร่วมมือซึ่งกันและกันมีแนวทางหลายประการ ส่วนการต่างตอบแทนซึ่งกันและกันจะเน้นการแบ่งปันความคิด ค่าใช้จ่าย และผลประโยชน์ร่วมกัน นอกจากนั้นการควบคุมซึ่งกันและกันมีการให้ความสำคัญกับการมีกฎหมายหรือกฎระเบียบ สำหรับการตรวจสอบซึ่งกันและกันจะเน้นการมีธรรมาภิบาลในการทำงาน
ข้อเสนอแนะในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ คือ หน่วยงานภาครัฐควรมีการส่งเสริมการนำแนวคิดหุ้นส่วนทางสังคมไปใช้ในการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมเพิ่มขึ้น การกำหนดนโยบายในการส่งเสริมให้ทุกภาคส่วนเข้ามามีส่วนร่วมเป็นหุ้นส่วนทางสังคมในการจัดสวัสดิการสังคมร่วมกันอย่างชัดเจน

Social partnership concept is an important concept to promote all sectors to participate efficiently in social welfare provision. This research aimed to study and analyze the social partnership concept in the social welfare provision of public benefit organizations by using critical theory, providing guidelines to strengthening social welfare in public benefit organizations according to the social partnership concept. Qualitative research was done, with data gathered by in-depth interviews. Samples were managers and committee members of public benefit organizations including host organizations, managers of social welfare-associated government agencies, and academic experts.
Results were that analysis of the social partnership concept in the social welfare provision of public benefit organizations by using critical theory presented the role of the social partnership concept in the social welfare provision of public benefit organizations according to different issues. Guidelines for strengthening the social partnership concept in social welfare provision of public benefit organizations included creating cooperation, reciprocity, control, and inspection between government agencies and public benefit organizations. There were different ways to create cooperation. Reciprocity emphasized sharing of ideas, expenses, and mutual benefits. Moreover, the mutual control had focused on having the laws or the regulations. For the mutual inspection, it focused on good governance at work.
The recommendations of this study were that government agencies should promote the social partnership concepts to apply in social welfare provision, and the formulation of policies to encourage all sectors to participate in social partnership in providing social welfare clearly.

Graphite in Gas-Cooled Reactors
No full textWhen graphite is used in a nuclear reactor, it will undergo dimensional and material properties changes due to the fast neutron irradiation and changes in temperature. These changes are further complicated in air and CO2-cooled reactors due to the effect of radiolytic oxidation. This chapter draws upon the unique experiences in the UK of CO2-cooled reactors and the behavior of graphite within such reactor environments. Examples of the observed changes in UK graphite grades as well as the current understanding of the mechanisms behind the changes are presented

A Comparative Analysis of Colour Idioms in Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian Languages
No full text This study aims to compare idioms referring to “colour” in Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian languages. Vietnamese is an Austroasiatic language while Indonesian originates from the Autronesian language and Thai comes from the Kra-Dai language family. Due to this difference, thee three languages have idioms representing the same way of people’s thinking. These languages represent culture in ASEAN regions. The idioms are used as a tool of communication in society. The data studied were collected from dictionaries and books about idioms in the three languages, such as the Vietnamese-English-Thai Dictionary, Vietnamese novels and poetry, Thai idioms collection books and an Indonesian Dictionary. There are 14 idioms found matched and divided into different categories that allowed an examination of literal and actual meanings in each language. In principle, the idioms express human actions, thoughts, and characters based on their social background. This work could help non-native speakers of Vietnamese, Thai or Indonesian languages to identify the meaning of difficult expression and enhance the language teaching.
