Sepn. of the minor actinides (Am/Cm) from spent nuclear fuel post-PUREX process is expected to play a key part in new reprocessing methodologies. To date, a no. of selective americium extractants from the bis-triazinylphenanthroline (BTPhen) ligand family have been identified. In this investigation, we synthesize 24 novel BTPhens with addnl. functionality to det. the effects on solubilities and americium extn. capabilities. Spin relaxation in graphene with self-assembled cobalt porphyrin molecules
In graphene spintronics, interaction of localized magnetic moments with the electron spins paves a new way to explore the underlying spin-relaxation mechanism. A self-assembled layer of organic cobalt porphyrin (CoPP) molecules on graphene provides a desired platform for such studies via the magnetic moments of porphyrin-bound cobalt atoms. In this work a study of spin-transport properties of graphene spin-valve devices functionalized with such CoPP molecules as a function of temperature via nonlocal spin-valve and Hanle spin-precession measurements is reported. For the functionalized (molecular) devices, we observe a decrease in the spin-relaxation time ??s even up to 50\%, which could be an indication of enhanced spin-flip scattering of the electron spins in graphene in the presence of the molecular magnetic moments. The effect of the molecular layer is masked for low-quality samples (low mobility), possibly due to dominance of Elliot-Yafet-type spin relaxation mechanisms
What is Empathy For?
The concept of empathy has received much attention from philosophers and also from both cognitive and social psychologists. It has, however, been given widely conflicting definitions, with some taking it primarily as an epistemological notion and others as a social one. Recently, empathy has been closely associated with the simulationist approach to social cognition and, as such, it might be thought that the concept’s utility stands or falls with that of simulation itself. I suggest that this is a mistake. Approaching the question of what empathy is via the question of what it is for, I claim that empathy plays a distinctive epistemological role: it alone allows us to know how others feel. This is independent of the plausibility of simulationism more generally. With this in view I propose an inclusive definition of empathy, one likely consequence of which is that empathy is not a natural kind. It follows that, pace a number of empathy researchers, certain experimental paradigms tell us not about the nature of empathy but about certain ways in which empathy can be achieved. I end by briefly speculating that empathy, so conceived, may also play a distinctive social role, enabling what I term ‘transparent fellow-feeling’
Effectiveness of metyrapone in treating Cushing's Syndrome: a retrospective multicenter study in 195 patients
Influenza, influenza-like symptoms and their association with cardiovascular risks: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.
AIMS: To synthesise the evidence relating influenza and influenza-like symptoms to the risks of myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure (HF) and stroke. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence relating influenza and influenza-like symptoms to the risks of MI, HF and stroke. We systematically searched all MEDLINE and EMBASE entries up to August 2014 for studies of influenza vs. the cardiovascular outcomes above. We conducted random effects meta-analysis using inverse variance method for pooled odds ratios (OR) and evaluated statistical heterogeneity using the I(2) statistic. RESULTS: We identified 12 studies with a total of 84,003 participants. The pooled OR for risk of MI vs. influenza (serologically confirmed) was 1.27 (95% CI, confidence interval 0.54-2.95), I(2) = 47%, which was significant for the only study that adjusted for confounders (OR 5.50, 95% CI 1.31-23.13). The pooled OR for risk of MI vs. influenza-like symptoms was 2.17 (95% CI 1.68-2.80), I(2) = 0%, which was significant for both unadjusted (OR 2.23, 95% CI 1.65-3.01, five studies) and adjusted studies (OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.24-3.27, two studies). We found one study that evaluated stroke risk, one study in patients with HF, and one that evaluated mortality from MI - all of these studies suggested increased risks of events with influenza-like symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: There is an association between influenza-like illness and cardiovascular events, but the relationship is less clear with serologically diagnosed influenza. We recommend renewed efforts to apply current clinical guidelines and maximise the uptake of annual influenza immunisation among patients with cardiovascular diseases, to decrease their risks of MI and stroke
A novel ex vivo model of compressive immature rib fractures at pathophysiological rates of loading
Compressive rib fractures are considered to be indicative of non-accidental injury (NAI) in infants, which is a significant and growing issue worldwide. The diagnosis of NAI is often disputed in a legal setting, and as a consequence there is a need to model such injuries ex vivo in order to characterise the forces required to produce non-accidental rib fractures. However, current models are limited by type of sample, loading method and rate of loading. Here, we aimed to: i) develop a loading system for inducing compressive fractures in whole immature ribs that is more representative of the physiological conditions and mechanism of injury employed in NAI and ii) assess the influence of loading rate and rib geometry on the mechanical performance of the tissue
