Expectations are more predictive of behavior than behavioral intentions: evidence from two prospective studies.
BACKGROUND: Understanding the gap between people's behavioral intentions and their subsequent behavior is a key problem for behavioral scientists, but little attention has been paid to how behavioral intentions are operationalized. PURPOSE: Test the distinction between asking people what they intend to do, as opposed to what they expect they will do. METHODS: Two studies were conducted in the domains of alcohol consumption (N = 152) and weight loss (N = 141). Participants completed questionnaires assessing their behavioral intentions, expectations, and self-efficacy at baseline; alcohol consumption/weight were assessed at both baseline and follow-up. RESULTS: In study 1, expectations were more predictive of alcohol consumption than behavioral intentions, controlling for baseline alcohol consumption and self-efficacy. In study 2, changes in expectations were more predictive of weight loss than changes in behavioral intentions, controlling for baseline weight and self-efficacy. CONCLUSION: The findings support a potentially important distinction between behavioral intentions and expectations

Shareholder Orientation and the Framing of Management Control Practices: A Field Study in a Chinese State-Owned Enterprise
This paper explores how notions of enhanced shareholder orientation influenced the evolution of management control practices in a Chinese state-owned enterprise. Drawing on the social movement literature and adopting a historically informed field study approach we examine how this took the form of a protracted framing process where an emerging, shareholder-focused frame interacted with the extant work unit frame embedded in Maoist ideology and the broader cultural system of Confucianism to imbue control practices with context-specific meanings. Particular attention is paid to how this interplay fostered varying degrees of frame alignment, denoting the extent to which particular frames are congruent with those enacted by various social actors, and how this affected organisational action. We illustrate how the shareholder-focused frame challenged extant control practices but was also complemented and ultimately replaced by the work unit frame in response to an escalating performance crisis. This leads us to question the ubiquity and pervasiveness of notions of enhanced shareholder orientation as a basis for governance and control practices observed in many “Western”, capitalist economies. We also discuss the broader implications of our analysis for cognate accounting research informed by notions of performativity and social psychology and the possibilities of rapprochement between these approaches and a social movement perspective on framing

Gamma irradiation resistance of an early age slag-blended cement matrix for nuclear waste encapsulation
Irradiation is one of the characteristic conditions that nuclear wasteforms must withstand to assure integrity during their service life. This study investigates gamma irradiation resistance of an earlyage slag cement-based grout, which is of interest for the nuclear industry as it is internationally used for encapsulation of low and intermediate level radioactive wastes. The slag cement-based grout withstands a gamma irradiation dose of 4.77 MGy over 256 h without reduction in its compressive strength; however, some cracking of irradiated samples was identified. The high strength retention is associated with the fact that the main hydration product forming in this binder, a calcium aluminum silicate hydrate (C–A–S–H) type gel, remains unmodified upon irradiation. Comparison with a heat-treated sample was carried out to identify potential effects of the temperature rise during irradiation exposure. The results suggested that formation of cracks is a combined effect of radiolysis and heating upon irradiation exposure

Corrosion resistance of graphene directly and locally grown on bulk nickel substrate by laser irradiation
We report the anticorrosion capability of graphene directly and locally grown on a bulk nickel substrate by a high power laser beam irradiation at room temperature. The anticorrosive performance of the locally laser-grown graphene on Ni, together with Ni covered graphene transferred from the CVD method and bare Ni, was investigated by electrochemical measurements and immersion tests. The corrosion rate of laser-grown graphene evaluated from potentiodynamic polarizations was 4.5 times lower than that of bare Ni, and the corrosion potential was increased by 126 mV. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements complemented the potentiodynamic results and indicated significant improvement in corrosion resistance in the presence of in situ grown graphene. The in situ grown graphene could protect the underlying substrate effectively, mainly due to its strong interaction with the substrate, and excellent barrier properties. This laser fabrication of graphene directly and locally on a bulk substrate provides a promising and workable method to protect metals from corrosion
Optimal control of plates using incompatible strains
A flat plate will bend into a curved shell if it experiences an inhomogeneous growth field or if constrained appropriately at a boundary. While the forward problem associated with this process is well studied, the inverse problem of designing the boundary conditions or growth fields to achieve a particular shape is much less understood. We use ideas from variational optimization theory to formulate a well posed version of this inverse problem to determine the optimal growth field or boundary condition that will give rise to an arbitrary target shape, optimizing for both closeness to the target shape and for smoothness of the growth field. We solve the resulting system of PDE numerically using finite element methods with examples for both the fully non-symmetric case as well as for simplified one-dimensional and axisymmetric geometries. We also show that the system can also be solved semi-analytically by positing an ansatz for the deformation and growth fields in a circular disk with given thickness profile, leading to paraboloidal, cylindrical and saddle-shaped target shapes, and show how a soft mode can arise from a non-axisymmetric deformation of a structure with axisymmetric material properties
