    Sustainable Production and Consumption

    Sustainable production and consumption (SPC) is both a policy area and a multi- and interdisciplinary research agenda that seeks to address the transformation of society toward environmental and social sustainability. The SPC field encompasses diverse research topics and theoretical approaches, often characterized as falling into stronger and weaker versions, defined by commitment to more or less systemic socioeconomic change. Fault lines within the field reflect fundamental controversies within the social and behavioral sciences more broadly, such as the structure–agency antinomy. Major theoretical developments within SPC include novel conceptual frameworks for production–consumption systems and reconceptualizations of consumption

    Dynamic Subtitles: the User Experience

    Subtitles (closed captions) on television are typically placed at the bottom-centre of the screen. However, placing subtitles in varying positions, according to the underlying video content (‘dynamic subtitles’), has the potential to make the overall viewing experience less dis- jointed and more immersive. This paper describes the testing of such subtitles with hearing-impaired users, and a new analysis of previously collected eye-tracking data. The qualitative data demonstrates that dynamic subti- tles can lead to an improved User Experience, although not for all types of subtitle user. The eye-tracking data was analysed to compare the gaze patterns of subtitle users with a baseline of those for people viewing with- out subtitles. It was found that gaze patterns of people watching dynamic subtitles were closer to the baseline than those of people watching with traditional subtitles. Finally, some of the factors that need to be considered when authoring dynamic subtitles are discussed

    Long-term sorption and solubility of bulk-fill and conventional resin-composites in water and artificial saliva

    Objectives To assess sorption and solubility of several bulk-fill and conventional resin-composites after one-year storage in water and artificial saliva (AS). Methods Six bulk-fill (SureFil SDR, Venus Bulk Fill, X-tra base, Filtek Bulk Fill flowable, Sonic Fill, and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill) and eight conventional resin-composites (Grandioso Flow, Venus Diamond Flow, XFlow, Filtek Supreme XTE, Grandioso, Venus Diamond, TPH Spectrum, and Filtek Z250) were tested. Disc shaped samples (n = 5) were randomly immersed into distilled water and AS for one-year period and weighed at different time intervals. Data were analysed using repeated measures ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s post hoc test (α = 0.05). Results In water, all materials (with the exception of X-Flow) reached a stable mass within three months with a slow increase observed in AS up to one year. Sorption values in water and AS for most materials were not significantly different (p ≥ 0.2). Sorption and solubility values in water ranged from (6.5 μg/mm3 and −1.77 μg/mm3 respectively) for X-tra base to (78.8 μg/mm3 and 44.77 μg/mm3 respectively) for X-Flow (p <0.005). Sorption of the polymer matrix in water ranged from 1.18% for XB to 9.95 % for XF. Conclusions Water sorption and solubility of resin-composites are material-dependent and highly affected by the filler loading and hydrophilicity of the resin matrix. BisEMA and UDMA-BisEMA based resins appeared to be more hydrophobic than BisGMA based systems. Water and AS, are generally comparable as storage media in terms of water sorption. Clinical significance Bulk-fill materials and conventional resin-composites tested varied in terms of sorption and solubility but both were considered stable in longterm water storage. The composition of each material is critical and can affect the long-term clinical performance of either type of resin-composite

    Understanding the causes of intravenous medication administration errors in hospitals: a qualitative critical incident study.

    OBJECTIVES: To investigate the underlying causes of intravenous medication administration errors (MAEs) in National Health Service (NHS) hospitals. SETTING: Two NHS teaching hospitals in the North West of England. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty nurses working in a range of inpatient clinical environments were identified and recruited using purposive sampling at each study site. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Semistructured interviews were conducted with nurse participants using the critical incident technique, where they were asked to discuss perceived causes of intravenous MAEs that they had been directly involved with. Transcribed interviews were analysed using the Framework approach and emerging themes were categorised according to Reason's model of accident causation. RESULTS: In total, 21 intravenous MAEs were discussed containing 23 individual active failures which included slips and lapses (n=11), mistakes (n=8) and deliberate violations of policy (n=4). Each active failure was associated with a range of error and violation provoking conditions. The working environment was implicated when nurses lacked healthcare team support and/or were exposed to a perceived increased workload during ward rounds, shift changes or emergencies. Nurses frequently reported that the quality of intravenous dose-checking activities was compromised due to high perceived workload and working relationships. Nurses described using approaches such as subconscious functioning and prioritising to manage their duties, which at times contributed to errors. CONCLUSIONS: Complex interactions between active and latent failures can lead to intravenous MAEs in hospitals. Future interventions may need to be multimodal in design in order to mitigate these risks and reduce the burden of intravenous MAEs

    In search of 'lost' knowledge and outsourced expertise in flood risk managment

    This paper examines the parallel discourses of ‘lost’ local flood expertise and the growing use of commercial consultancies to outsource aspects of flood risk work. We critically examine the various claims and counter-claims about lost, local and external expertise in flood management, focusing on the aftermath of the 2007 floods in East Yorkshire, England. Drawing on interviews with consultants, drainage engineers and others, we caution against claims that privilege ‘local’ floods knowledge as ‘good’ and expert knowledge as somehow suspect. This paper urges carefulness in interpreting claims about local knowledge, arguing that it is important always to think instead of hybrid knowledge formations. We conclude by arguing that experiments in the co-production of flood risk knowledge need to be seen as part of a spectrum of ways for producing shared knowledge

    A novel electronic assessment strategy to support applied Drosophila genetics training on university courses

    The advent of “omic” technologies has revolutionized genetics and created a demand to focus 3 ; 2 ; 1 classical genetics on its present-day applications (Redfield, 2012, PLoS Biol 10: e1001356). This demand can 5 ; 4 be met by training students in Drosophila mating scheme design, which is an important problem-solving 6 skill routinely applied in many modern research laboratories. It requires a thorough understanding and application of classical genetics rules while also an introduction to transgenic technologies and the use 7 of model organisms. As we show here, such training can be implemented as a flexible and concise module (~1-day home study, ~8-hour course time) on university courses by using our previously published training package designed for fly researchers (Roote and Prokop, 2013, G3 (Bethesda) 3: 3532358). However, assessing this training to make it an accredited course element is difficult, especially in large courses. Here, we present a powerful assessment strategy based on a novel hybrid concept in which students solve crossing tasks initially on paper and then answer automatically marked questions on the computer (1.5 hours total). This procedure can be used to examine student performance on more complex tasks than conventional e-assessments and is more versatile, time-saving, and fairer than standard paper-based assignments. Our evaluation shows that the hybrid assessment is effective and reliably detects varying degrees of understanding among students. It also may be applicable in other disciplines requiring complex problem solving, such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, or informatics. Here, we describe our strategies in detail and provide all resources needed for their implementation
