    Simple Detection Kit for Copper (II) Ion in Water using Solid Sorbent Modified with Cyanidin Extracted from Red Cabbage

    A simple copper (II) ion (Cu2+) test kit was developed in this work using a cheap and environmental-friendly solid sorbent modified with cyanidin extracted from red cabbage. The best solid sorbent was found to be a cation-exchange resin (Pall Tech: PTNR 8715, Nuclear Grade ion Exchange Resin). The optimum ratio of cyanidin : resin was 1.6 mg : 2 g giving a clear naked-eye detection of interactive Cu2+. The detection of Cu2+could be able to change the color of modified resin at their different concentrations along with double rinsing the modified resin with a few solution of pH 7 buffer and mixing with 1 mL of water sample. To evaluation, the results from naked-eye detection were compared with those of Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrophotometry (ICP-OES), and there was no significant difference noticed. The lowest detection limit of Cu2+ was 0.70 ppm which was lower than the drinking water contaminant standards. The modified resin might probably not able to change the color in case of high concentration of Calcium ion (Ca2+). However, this novel test kit could be applied in real water sample for preliminary screening and detecting the Cu2+ contamination with simplicity and also environmental-safety.&nbsp

    Effect of hyposalinity on coral bleaching and survival in a hard (Pocillopora damicornis) and soft coral (Sarcophyton sp.)

            This study investigates the effect of hyposalinity on coral bleaching in a species of hard coral (Pocillopora damicornis) and a soft coral (Sarcophyton sp.). Corals were exposed to ambient seawater (32 psu) and reduced-salinity seawater (15 psu and 25 psu) for 32 days. Both the hard coral and soft coral were highly affected by the salinity level of 15 psu. Fragments of Pocillopora damicornis were 90% bleached within four days and died after five days of exposure to salinity levels of 15 psu. Similarly, Sarcophyton sp. was 50%-95% bleached within four days and died after seven days of exposure. Both corals were less impacted by exposure to salinity levels of 25 psu and 32 psu; P. damicornis and Sarcophyton sp. were partially bleached but survived until the end of the experiment. We report that P. damicornis is more susceptible to hyposalinity than Sarcophyton sp. The results of this study can serve as basic information for managers regarding the release of freshwater into areas of the ocean with coral reefs. The study also suggests that salinity monitoring during rainy seasons or flooding may allow prediction of future coral bleaching caused by these low-salinity events.     The Development of Training Curriculum to Enhance Information and Communication Technologies Skill for Pre-service Teachers

         This study aims at 1) developing a training curriculum to enhance the skills of using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for pre-service teachers; and 2) to examine results of experiment in using the training curriculum. The participants were 113 pre-service teachers from 4 classes of Early Childhood Education Program, Faculty of Education, Phuket Rajabhat University. These students were studying in year 1 to year 4. To collect the data, a set of training curriculum, achievement tests and a questionnaire were employed. The obtained data were statistically analyzed using average score, standard deviation and effectiveness index value. The results revealed that 1) the training curriculum which consisted of four contents including the use of Google Drive for collaborative online working, the use of Google Sites to create Electronics Portfolio (E-Portfolio), the use of PowerPoint program to design Multimedia for Education and the use of applications and tools to create a form to receive and analyze the data for research conducting was appropriate to use to train ICT skills to pre-service teachers at the highest level; 2) The results of the experiment in using the training curriculum were as follows: the effectiveness index values of participants’ learning outcomes in each content were 61.96 percent, 71.92 percent, 68.79 percent and 65.87 respectively. These values were higher than 60 percent which was the specified value; and the participants were satisfied with all contents of the training curriculum at the highest level.
