    Monte Carlo assessment of customer voltage constraints in the context of CVR schemes

    (paper accepted) Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) schemes are seen as promising techniques to deliver ancillary services, defer investments and provide energy savings. However, the benefits that might be unlocked are limited by the voltage variations that can be introduced without negatively affecting LV customers. This paper statistically quantifies this limit adopting a Monte Carlo approach on 57 UK LV feeders during winter. For this purpose, the percentage of BS EN 50160 non-compliant customers for different voltage levels on the primary side of the LV transformer is quantified. Results show that to maintain this figure below 1% the voltage on the primary side of every LV transformer should be maintained between 0.94 and 1 pu. Finally, the limitations imposed by these constraints are shown on a real UK MV network where the maximum voltage reduction for a specific day is also quantified

    País de Gordos/País de Muertos: Obesity, Death and Nation in Biomedical and Forensic Genetics in Mexico

    This article provides a comparison between genomic medicine and forensic genetics in Mexico, in light of recent depictions of the nation as a ‘país de gordos’ (country of the fat) and a ‘país de muertos’ (country of the dead). We examine the continuities and ruptures in the public image of genetics in these two areas of attention, health and security, focusing especially on how the relevant publics of genetic science are assembled in each case. Publics of biomedical and forensic genetics are assembled through processes of recruitment and interpellation, in ways that modulate current theorizations of co-production. The comparison also provides a vista onto discussions regarding the involvement of genetics in regimes of governance and citizenship and about the relationship between the state and biopower in a context of perceived health crisis and war-like violence

    Good Vibrations: Global Processing Can Increase the Pleasantness of Touch.

    Visual-tactile carry-over effects of global/local processing (attention to the whole, versus the details) have been reported under active touch conditions. We investigated whether carry-over effects of global/local processing also occur for passive touch and whether global/local processing has differential effects on affective and discriminative aspects of touch. Participants completed two tactile tasks involving pleasantness rating and discrimination of a set of tactile vibrations before and after completing a version of the Navon task that encouraged a focus on the global (n = 30), local (n = 30), or both (n = 30) features of a series of visual stimuli. In line with previous research suggesting a link between global processing and positive emotion, global processing increased pleasantness ratings of high (but not low) frequency tactile vibrations. Local processing did not improve the ability to discriminate between vibrations of different frequencies, however. There was some evidence of a tactile-visual carry-over effect; prior local processing of tactile vibrations reduced global precedence during the Navon task in the control group. We have shown carry-over effects of global versus local processing on passive touch perception. These findings provide further evidence suggesting that a common perceptual mechanism determines processing level across modalities and show for the first time that prior global processing affects the pleasantness of touch

    Consensus control of a class of Lipschitz nonlinear systems with input delay

    This paper deals with the consensus control design for Lipschitz nonlinear multi-agent systems with input delay. The Artstein-Kwon-Pearson reduction method is employed to deal with the input delay and the integral term that remains in the transformed system is analyzed by using Krasovskii functional. Upon exploring certain features of the Laplacian matrix, sufficient conditions for global stability of the consensus control are identified using Lyapunov method in the time domain. The proposed control only uses relative state information of the agents. The effectiveness of the proposed control design is demonstrated through a simulation study

    In Defence of British Politics Against the British Political Tradition

    This article explores some of the current themes round the perceived crisis in British politics in supposed an age of ‘anti-politics’. Drawing on Bernard Crick's In Defence of Politics, it offers a critique of what is referred to as a dominant British political tradition and in so doing seeks to challenge ‘demand-side’ accounts that ostensibly defend the traditional arena politics of the Westminster system. Instead, it argues that developments around issues such as big data, social media and freedom of information have led to a more open society in recent years. It concludes by suggesting that if traditional political institutions wish to restore a greater degree of legitimacy, they need to ‘do’ or, more particularly, ‘supply’ politics differently, adapting to these changes by seeking out new modes of openness, engagement and accountability

    Machine learning algorithm accurately detects fMRI signature of vulnerability to major depression.

    Standard functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analyses cannot assess the potential of a neuroimaging signature as a biomarker to predict individual vulnerability to major depression (MD). Here, we use machine learning for the first time to address this question. Using a recently identified neural signature of guilt-selective functional disconnection, the classification algorithm was able to distinguish remitted MD from control participants with 78.3% accuracy. This demonstrates the high potential of our fMRI signature as a biomarker of MD vulnerability

    Bias in microRNA functional enrichment analysis

    MOTIVATION: Many studies have investigated the differential expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) in disease states and between different treatments, tissues, and developmental stages. Given a list of perturbed miRNAs, it is common to predict the shared pathways on which they act. The standard test for functional enrichment typically yields dozens of significantly enriched functional categories, many of which appear frequently in the analysis of apparently unrelated diseases and conditions. RESULTS: We show that the most commonly used functional enrichment test is inappropriate for the analysis of sets of genes targeted by miRNAs. The hypergeometric distribution used by the standard method consistently results in significant p-values for functional enrichment for targets of randomly selected miRNAs, reflecting an underlying bias in the predicted gene targets of miRNAs as a whole. We developed an algorithm to measure enrichment using an empirical sampling approach, and applied this in a reanalysis of the Gene Ontology classes of targets of miRNA lists from 44 published studies. The vast majority of the miRNA target sets were not significantly enriched in any functional category after correction for bias. We therefore argue against continued use of the standard functional enrichment method for miRNA targets.
