    Under-representation of women on governing bodies: women general practitioners on Clinical Commissioning Groups in England

    Recently formed Clinical Commissioning Groups in the English National Health Service have important responsibility for commissioning local health and care services.Women are under-represented on the governing bodies of these significant primary care based organizations despite the fact that they constitute almost half of the general practitioner workforce in England. This essay examines some of the reasons for this under-representation including the predominance of women in the salaried and part-time sector of general practice and gendered management styles within the National Health Service. It is argued that the under-representation of women on Clinical Commissioning Group governing bodies matters in terms of social justice, representation of the broader community and role models

    Tightening the belt: Constraining the mass and evolution in SDC335

    Recent ALMA observations identified one of the most massive star-formingcores yet observed in the Milky Way; SDC335-MM1, within the infrareddark cloud SDC335.579-0.292. Along with an accompanying core MM2, SDC335appears to be in the early stages of its star formation process. In thispaper we aim to constrain the properties of the stars forming withinthese two massive millimetre sources. Observations of SDC335 at 6, 8, 23and 25GHz were made with the ATCA. We report the results of thesecontinuum measurements, which combined with archival data, allow us tobuild and analyse the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of thecompact sources in SDC335. Three HCHII regions within SDC335 areidentified, two within the MM1 core. For each HCHII region, a free-freeemission curve is fit to the data allowing the derivation of thesources' emission measure, ionising photon flux and electron density.Using these physical properties we assign each HCHII region a ZAMSspectral type, finding two protostars with characteristics of spectraltype B1.5 and one with a lower limit of B1-B1.5. Ancillary data frominfrared to mm wavelength are used to construct free-free componentsubtracted SEDs for the mm-cores, allowing calculation of the bolometricluminosities and revision of the previous gas mass estimates. Themeasured luminosities for the two mm-cores are lower than expected fromaccreting sources displaying characteristics of the ZAMS spectral typeassigned to them. The protostars are still actively accreting,suggesting that a mechanism is limiting the accretion luminosity, wepresent the case for two different mechanisms capable of causing this.Finally, using the ZAMS mass values as lower limit constraints, a finalstellar population for SDC335 was synthesised finding SDC335 is likelyto be in the process of forming a stellar cluster comparable to theTrapezium Cluster and NGC6334 I(N)

    Web-GIS Tools for Climate Change Adaptation Planning in Cities

    This chapter explores the state of-the-art in existing climate change risk, vulnerability and adaptation assessment tools, with a focus on web-based tools. It then details the development and application of two online decision support tools created for climate change adaptation planning in cities – a Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Tool and Surface Temperature And Runoff (STAR) Tools. Both are freely available web-GIS tools that can be used to inform policy, strategy and development. The Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Tool, developed through a collaborative and iterative process, follows the principles of an online public participation GIS. The Assessment Tool delivers GIS data and analysis functions online, widening the possibilities for participation in climate change adaptation planning. The STAR Tools enable assessment of the impacts of climate change on temperature and runoff in a specified urban area and evaluate the potential of green infrastructure as a climate change adaptation response. The STAR Tools can be used to develop ‘what-if’ scenarios, to illustrate how changes resulting from different land surface cover and climate change scenarios can impact upon local surface temperatures and runoff. The chapter presents the lessons learnt from the development and application of these tools in municipalities across Europe and discusses key challenges for developing such tools to aid effective climate change adaptation planning in cities

    Drivers and performance implications of international key account management capability

    Key account management plays a pivotal role for managers and practitioners in the maintenance of successful customer–supplier relationships. Yet, little is known conceptually or empirically about how suppliers can move beyond market scanning and develop international key account management capabilities in international customer–supplier relationships. Drawing from the dynamic capability literature, we develop and test a model of antecedents and performance implications of suppliers’ international key account management capabilities. In addition, the moderating effects of cultural distance and supplier information technology advancement are examined. An analysis of 246 Taiwanese electronics suppliers reveals that market scanning and trust are recognized as critical to the development of suppliers’ international key account management capabilities. Moreover, these key account management capabilities can facilitate suppliers’ market performance. Importantly, cultural distance and suppliers’ IT advancement moderate the impact of market scanning on the development of key account management in international exchange relationships

    Quantitative analysis of drug effects at the whole-body level: a case study for glucose metabolism in malaria patients.

    We propose a hierarchical modelling approach to construct models for disease states at the whole-body level. Such models can simulate effects of drug-induced inhibition of reaction steps on the whole-body physiology. We illustrate the approach for glucose metabolism in malaria patients, by merging two detailed kinetic models for glucose metabolism in the parasite Plasmodium falciparum and the human red blood cell with a coarse-grained model for whole-body glucose metabolism. In addition we use a genome-scale metabolic model for the parasite to predict amino acid production profiles by the malaria parasite that can be used as a complex biomarker

    A critical appraisal of Sustainable Consumption and Production research: The reformist, revolutionary and reconfiguration positions

    This conceptual review article provides a critical appraisal of Sustainable Consumption and Production research, which is currently framed by two generic positions. First, the ‘reformist’ position, which focuses on firms pursuing green eco-innovations and consumers buying eco-efficient products, represents the political and academic orthodoxy. Second, the ‘revolutionary’ position, which is a radical critique of the mainstream, advocates the abolishment of capitalism, materialism, and consumerism, and promotes values such as frugality, sufficiency, and localism. We find this dichotomous debate problematic, because it is intellectually stifling and politically conservative (in its outcomes). To move beyond this dichotomy, we propose a third position, ‘reconfiguration’, which focuses on transitions in socio-technical systems and daily life practices and accommodates new conceptual frameworks. For each of the three positions, we discuss: 1) the scale and type of change, 2) views on consumption and production in exemplary approaches, 3) underlying theoretical, epistemological and normative orientations, 4) policy implications, and 5) critical appraisal. The conclusion compares the three positions, provides arguments for the fruitfulness of the reconfiguration-position and offers four critical reflections about future Sustainable Consumption and Production research agendas

    We created Asthma e-Lab, a secure web-based research environment to support consistent recording, description and sharing of data, computational/statistical methods and emerging findings across the five UK birth cohorts. The e-Lab serves as a data repository for our unified dataset and provides the computational resources and a scientific social network to support collaborative research. All activities are transparent, and emerging findings are shared via the e-Lab, linked to explanations of analytical methods, thus enabling knowledge transfer. eLab facilitates the iterative interdisciplinary dialogue between clinicians, statisticians, computer scientists, mathematicians, geneticists and basic scientists, capturing collective thought behind the interpretations of findings
