    A Methodological Approach to Non-invasive Assessments of Vascular Function and Morphology.

    The endothelium is the innermost lining of the vasculature and is involved in the maintenance of vascular homeostasis. Damage to the endothelium may predispose the vessel to atherosclerosis and increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. Assessments of peripheral endothelial function are good indicators of early abnormalities in the vascular wall and correlate well with assessments of coronary endothelial function. The present manuscript details the important methodological steps necessary for the assessment of microvascular endothelial function using laser Doppler imaging with iontophoresis, large vessel endothelial function using flow-mediated dilatation, and carotid atherosclerosis using carotid artery ultrasound. A discussion on the methodological considerations for each of the techniques is also presented, and recommendations are made for future research

    Water transport in an epoxy-phenolic coating

    Thermoset coatings commonly rely on high cross-linking density to provide enhanced barrier properties. Hence it is surprising that for the industrial epoxy-phenolic network investigated, equilibrium moisture uptake is found to increase with respect to cure time, i.e., with greater cross-linking. Molecular interactions between absorbed water and the resin are characterised using infrared spectroscopy, and water uptake is correlated to network polymer features such as polarity and free volume. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.     MeMoVolc consensual document: a review of cross-disciplinary approaches to characterizing small explosive magmatic eruptions

    A workshop entitled "Tracking and understanding volcanic emissions through cross-disciplinary integration: a textural working group" was held at the Universite Blaise Pascal (Clermont-Ferrand, France) on the 6-7 November 2012. This workshop was supported by the European Science Foundation (ESF). The main objective of the workshop was to establish an initial advisory group to begin to define measurements, methods, formats and standards to be applied in the integration of geophysical, physical and textural data collected during volcanic eruptions. This would homogenize procedures to be applied and integrated during both past and ongoing events. The workshop comprised a total of 35 scientists from six countries (France, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Iceland). The four main aims were to discuss and define: standards, precision and measurement protocols for textural analysis; identification of textural, field deposit, chemistry and geophysical parameters that can best be measured and combined; the best delivery formats so that data can be shared between and easily used by different groups; and multi-disciplinary sampling and measurement routines currently used and measurement standards applied, by each community. The group agreed that community-wide, cross-disciplinary integration, centred on defining those measurements and formats that can be best combined, is an attainable and key global focus. Consequently, we prepared this paper to present our initial conclusions and recommendations, along with a review of the current state of the art in this field that supported our discussions

    The role of the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool in palliative home care: A qualitative study of practitioners' perspectives of its impact and mechanisms of action.

    BACKGROUND: The importance of supporting family carers is well recognised in healthcare policy. The Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool is an evidence-based, comprehensive measure of carer support needs to facilitate carer support in palliative home care. AIM: To examine practitioner perspectives of the role of the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool intervention in palliative home care to identify its impact and mechanisms of action. DESIGN: Qualitative - practitioner accounts of implementation (interviews, focus groups, reflective audio diaries) plus researcher field notes. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: A total of 29 staff members from two hospice home-care services - contrasting geographical locations, different service sizes and staff composition. A thematic analysis was conducted. RESULTS: Existing approaches to identification of carer needs were informal and unstructured. Practitioners expressed some concerns, pre-implementation, about negative impacts of the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool on carers and expectations raised about support available. In contrast, post-implementation, the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool provided positive impacts when used as part of a carer-led assessment and support process: it made support needs visible, legitimised support for carers and opened up different conversations with carers. The mechanisms of action that enabled the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool to make a difference were creating space for the separate needs of carers, providing an opportunity for carers to express support needs and responding to carers' self-defined priorities. CONCLUSION: The Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool delivered benefits through a change in practice to an identifiable, separate assessment process for carers, facilitated by practitioners but carer-led. Used routinely with all carers, the Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool has the potential to normalise carer assessment and support, facilitate delivery of carer-identified support and enable effective targeting of resources

    Disclosure Risk Measurement with Entropy in Two-Dimensional Sample Based Frequency Tables

    We extend a disclosure risk measure defined for population based frequencytables to sample based frequency tables. The disclosure risk measure is based on information theoretical expressions, such as entropy and conditional entropy, that reflect the properties of attribute disclosure. To estimate the disclosure risk of a sample based frequency table we need to take into account the underlying population and therefore need both the population and sample frequencies. However, population frequencies might not be known and therefore they must be estimated from the sample. We consider twoprobabilistic models, a log-linear model and a so-called Polya urn model, to estimate the population frequencies. Numerical results suggest that the Polya urn model may be a feasible alternative to the log-linear model for estimating population frequencies and the disclosure risk measure

    A finite element analysis of composite T-joints used in wind turbine blades

    Wind turbine blade failures are due to various complicated reasons but blade fracture accounts for most accidents. The composite materials used in blade construction are typically woven fabrics. The formation of internal detailed shapes within the blade, allowing features such as spars and shear webs, inevitably requires these 2D material configurations to be formed into 3D shapes. This introduces sites within the structure where load transfer occurs across regions with no fibre reinforcement. These weak areas become sites for damage initiation. This study analyses the way the composite T-joint fails and develops methods of improving performance and enhancing durability
