Prevalence of ESBL-Producing Escherichia coli Isolated from elderly living at home setting in Mae Chai district, Phayao, Thailand

    No full text
The prevalence of ESBL-producing bacteria has become a problem worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the existence of ESBL-producing E. coli isolates and their drug resistant genes that have become normal flora of the elderly population living in Phayao province. The fecal specimens from 252 elderly people were collected and drug resistant phenotypic screening was done by plating the samples on MacConkey agar supplemented with (1 µg/mL) cefotaxime or ceftazidime. The suspected E. coli isolates were identified with biochemical tests. Then, the phenotype of ESBL was confirmed by combination disk method and analyzed for blaTEM, blaSHV, and blaCTX-M-1 by PCR. In this study, 75 isolates (29.8%) were confirmed as suspected ESBL-producing E. coli. All confirmed isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR), and resistant to AMP, CTX, CRO, and CPD. However, all of them were susceptible to IMP, ETP, and MEM. There were 5 phenotypic β-lactam resistant patterns detected. The most predominant pattern was AMP CTX CAZ CRO FEP CPD ATM (55.4%). The genotypic characterization showed predominance of blaCTX-M-1 (35.7%) while there was no blaSHV detected. Moreover, the combination of blaTEM and blaCTX-M-1 together was detected at about 43%. This study showed there was high prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in elderly people residing in one regional community. These results suggest that ESBL may be transmitted via feces in communities of close-living quarters without good cleaning and hygiene practices. Full text link
The objectives of this study including 1) to do a comparative study of vegetation indices to analyze land use patterns 2) to analyze relationship between vegetation indices and land surface temperature (LST). There were 5 different types of vegetation indices in the analysis including Ratio Vegetation Index (RVI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Building Index (NDBI), Soil Adjustment Vegetation Index (SAVI), and Transform Vegetation Index (TVI) from Landsat 8 OLI. The classification method used maximum likelihood classifier and the accuracy assessment was done by the confusion matrix. Split –window technique was used to analyze LST from Landsat 8 TIRS. Finally, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and linear regression were used. The results found that NDVI provided the highest overall accuracy and kappa statistic followed by TVI, NDBI, RVI and SAVI, respectively. Analysis of LST presented urban and built-up areas had the highest LST. The relationship analysis between the LST and the vegetation indices found that LST and NDBI had positive correlation. However, LST and RVI, NDVI, SAVI and TVI had negative correlation, respectively. From the result, high accuracy of vegetation indices could be applied to image classification. The analysis of LST, which was received from each of land use, would be useful for urban planning. Efficient Modified Estimators for the Population Mean Using Auxiliary Variables

This paper presents three modified estimators to estimate the population mean by utilizing information on auxiliary variables under simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR). Motivation for the proposed estimators is based on Yadav et al. (2019). Furthermore, the expressions for bias and mean squared error (MSE) of proposed estimators were obtained and compared with other relevant existing estimators through theoretical and empirical studies. It is shown that the proposed estimators perform better than other estimators. Keywords: Modified estimators, Auxiliary variable, Bias, MS
