    Piecewise additivity for nonexpected utility

    A model of choice under purely subjective uncertainty, Piecewise-Additive Choquet Expected (PACE) utility, is introduced. PACE utility allows for optimism and pessimism simultaneously, but represents a minimal departure from expected utility. It can be seen as a continuous version of NEO-expected util- ity (Chateauneuf et al, 2007) and, as such, is especially suited for applications with rich state spaces. The main theorem provides a preference foundation for PACE utility in the Savage framework of purely subjective uncertainty with an arbitrary outcome set

    Inhibition of Protein Aggregation and Amyloid Formation by Small Molecules

    Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by extracellular senile plaques made of β-amyloid (Aβ) protein. Thus far, drug after drug in human trials has failed to slow its progression. How compounds that reduce fibril formation and toxicity in cells bind to the Aβ toxic oligomers, is unknown. This account reviews recent drugs mainly targeting Aβ, how they were identified and summarizes their successes from in vitro and in vivo experiments and frequent failures in clinical trials. We then report recent in vitro and simulation results on how inhibitors interact with Aβ monomers and oligomers, highly desirable knowledge for predicting new efficient drugs. We conclude with a perspective on the future of the inhibition of amyloid formation by small molecules/peptides

    A Comparison and Fusion of Radar and Optical Data for the Detection of the Edale 2008 Burn Scar in the Peak District National Park

    Systematic detection and monitoring of moorland wildfires is essential to conservation groups such as Moors for the Future to understand the extent of damage and to monitor natural post-fire recovery or peatland restoration measures. The collection of burn scar perimeter data and vegetation recovery in the field is labour-intensive and time-consuming, limiting the spatial coverage of regular monitoring. The large (7 km2) Bleaklow 2003 burn scar was successfully detected by C-band SAR data in the Peak District National Park for up to 71 days post-fire (Millin-Chalabi et al., 2014). With the launch of Sentinel-1A in 2014 and Sentinel-1B due in 2016, regular monitoring of moorland areas for burn scar detection using SAR is now on the horizon. Moorland areas are regularly covered by cloud, however, data fusion of optical and radar data will be explored for burn scar area enhancement. The aim of this research is to use multi-temporal and multi-sensor techniques to compare and contrast the ability of optical and radar data to detect the smaller Edale 2008 burn scar of 0.10 km2. We present a time series of C-band (ASAR and ERS-2) and L-band (PALSAR) data and compare burn scar detection using radar with Landsat 7 scenes

    Kabuki syndrome: expanding the phenotype to include microphthalmia and anophthalmia.

    Kabuki syndrome is a rare genetic malformation syndrome that is characterized by distinct facies, structural defects and intellectual disability. Kabuki syndrome may be caused by mutations in one of two histone methyltransferase genes: KMT2D and KDM6A. We describe a male child of nonconsanguineous Irish parents presenting with multiple malformations, including bilateral extreme microphthalmia; cleft palate; congenital diaphragmatic hernia; duplex kidney; as well as facial features of Kabuki syndrome, including interrupted eyebrows and lower lid ectropion. A de-novo germline mutation in KMT2D was identified. Whole-exome sequencing failed to reveal mutations in any of the known microphthalmia/anopthalmia genes. We also identified four other patients with Kabuki syndrome and microphthalmia. We postulate that Kabuki syndrome may produce this type of ocular phenotype as a result of extensive interaction between KMT2D, WAR complex proteins and PAXIP1. Children presenting with microphthalmia/anophthalmia should be examined closely for other signs of Kabuki syndrome, especially at an age where the facial gestalt might be less readily appreciable
