A emergência da Interação Fictiva em sala de aula como estratégia de ensino e aprendizagem / The emergence of Fictive Interaction in the classroom as a teaching and learning strategy

    No full text
Abstract: This paper investigates specific manifestations of fictivity, such as the cognitive pattern of discrepant representations (TALMY, 2000), in oral language data collected by Cadilhe (2013) from undergraduate medical classes. More specifically, we use the concept of Fictive Interaction (PASCUAL, 2014), according to which language users use the Conversation Frame to structure thought, grammar and discourse, so as to highlight its potential for application as a communicative teaching and learning strategy. As a methodology, we use the blend of corpus-based and corpus-driven approaches to balance theoretical categories and empiricism. As a result, four formal and functional patterns of fictivity were mapped: fictive question-answer, fictive question, fictive deixis, and fictive direct speech. It was found, especially in teaching speech, that fictivity is often used in discursive moments of argumentation and explanation. However, teacher and students demonstrate to know how to operate with non-true scenarios in order to gain access to effective scenarios that involve medical practice. It is also noted that the phenomenon is a moderating device of teaching and learning, as a communicative strategy that appeals to the Conversation Frame to take advantage of what is most pervasive and entrenched in cognitive and interaction subjects, which is the everyday conversation itself. Keywords: cognition; fictivity; fictive interaction; use; classroom

About the recognition of linguistic data from a children’s corpus: communication as a relevant factor

Abstract: The selection and the recognition of the first vocalizations produced by a child as linguistic data is an arduous topic for research that studies longitudinal children’s corpora. Which children’s sounds should integrate the corpus? Selection, recognition, registration, contextual annotations, and discursive interpretation are subtle choices that are subject to questioning and maturation. This brief essay aims to illustrate the theme with an analysis of examples from the corpus compiled by the group Corpus Infantil Longitudinal (CIL) in according to an interactionist view. On Partial Null Subject languages: Why pro-drop in Brazilian Portuguese and Russian became similar but not identical/ Sobre as línguas de Sujeito Parcialmente Nulo: Por que o pro-drop em português brasileiro e em russo se tornaram semelhantes, mas não idênticos

Abstract: In this paper, I claim that a parametric view on change in pro-drop does not contradict the fact that not all the Partial Null Subject (PNS) languages display identical properties. I show that the contingent nature of diachronic change is the reason for the slight differences between PNS languages. Modern Russian (MR) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP) are two PNS languages that developed from Consistent Null Subject antecessors (Old Russian and European Portuguese) independently from each other. I account for the change in pro-drop experienced by these two languages, analyzing the properties usually related to the null subject parameter (verbal inflection, clitics, null objects, embedded and arbitrary null subjects), and show that the final parametric setting in both MR and BP was almost identical, with small differences that can be attributed to the different initial conditions for the change. Keywords: Pro-drop; null subjects; null objects; clitics; Consistent Null Subject languages; Partial Null Subject languages; Brazilian Portuguese; European Portuguese; Modern Russian; Old Russian.

Abstract: In this study, which has as its object the Brazilian cultural magazines of the 1970s, we are dedicated to analyzing two of the best-known periodicals that emerged and circulated during the period: Argumento – revista mensal de cultura, and Almanaque – cadernos de literatura e ensaio, by the links that are evident among them and by the particular situation of each of these publications with regard to their editorial projects and their relationship with censorship mechanisms. Our objective is, based on these elements, to verify how they positioned themselves and how the choices they made were decisive in enabling or preventing their circulation. In addition, we are interested in observing how they position themselves in the face of repression and how they could, like many others before them, even in adverse circumstances - or even because of that, establish networks and foster an intellectual dialogue that transcends the scope of national territory, contributing to Latin American integration. Therefore, we base our analysis on the studies of theorists such as Beatriz Sarlo; Horacio Tarcus; Pablo Rocca and Maria Lucia Camargo. Keywords: Brazilian cultural magazines; 1970s; Argumento; Almanaque

Abstract: In this article, we intend to explore the multiple transatlantic connections between Portuguese, Brazilian and Cape Verdean intellectuals around the debate on nation, modernity and race. We will explore these interlocutions through texts from the Boletim da Sociedade Luso-Africana do Rio de Janeiro, a space for broad dialogue between intellectuals in the 1930s for a panlusitana notion of nation that anticipates several elements of Freyrian Lusotropicalism of the 1950s-1970s from the image of Cape Verde (and Brazil) as the prodigal children of the Lusitanian diaspora. These transits show how despite the marginal status of these debates (mainly the transition from a biological to an anthropological notion of race) there was a wide range of readings on the “modern” in circulation at that conjuncture. Keywords: Creoleity; Modernism; South Atlantic; Verdean Cape; Luso-African Buletin of Rio de Janeiro

Rachel de Queiroz, Nouveau Roman e a literatura brasileira dos anos 1970: uma análise da recepção crítica do romance Dôra, Doralina e o seu lugar na ficção da época/ Rachel de Queiroz, Nouveau Roman and Brazilian Literature of the 1970s: an analysis of the critical reception of the novel Dôra, Doralina and its situation in the fiction of that period

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze one of the most significant issues dealt by the “first wave” of the critical reception of Rachel de Queiroz’s novel Dôra, Doralina (1975): its position in relation to the Brazilian Literature of the 1970s, a period in which the Nouveau Roman influenced our fiction to a certain extent. We grounded our views on the criticism of that French trend particularly on the contribution of Leila Perrone-Moisés (1966); as well as on theoretical indications given by the writers themselves, since the “new novelists” dedicated part of their intellectual production to the reflection upon what they produced – e.g. Alain Robbe-Grillet (1969). Out of those sources, we stated what the Nouveau Roman was and what were its propositions to reform the genre. Afterwards, we focused on what the press of 1970s wrote about the long-awaited book by Rachel de Queiroz, a novel put as a representative of a bourgeois tradition, which was opposed, therefore, to the emerging fictional innovations perceived in the literature of that decade. Keywords: Rachel de Queiroz; Nouveau Roman; fiction; critical reception; Brazilian literature

“Aprendendo inglês diferentemente do mesmo jeito”: representações discursivas de coaches de idiomas / “Learning English Differently in the Same Way”: Discursive Representations of Language Coaches

    No full text
Based on studies on trans/indisciplinary applied linguistics and on discursive theories of language, this paper investigates discursive representations of English teaching & learning by language coaches. To this end, this study investigated enunciative regularities in a corpus of utterances of English coaches on YouTube videos, delineating four main representations: (1) one does not learn English by formal methods; (2) one learns English by avoiding their mother tongue; (3) one learns English by believing in their own potential; and (4) one learns English by establishing goals. The analyses indicate a neoliberal interdiscursivity that is updated in the supposed novelty brought by the profession and reinforces the imaginary that teaching and learning a second language is a natural and spontaneous process that can be controlled and mastered, thus exempting any conflicts and tensions inherent to the subject of language.KEYWORDS: discourse; English teaching-learning; neoliberalism

Políticas linguísticas públicas para as línguas estrangeiras no Brasil e no Uruguai: uma fotografia das leis nacionais na primeira década do século XXI / Public Language Policies for Foreign Languages in Brazil and Uruguay: a Photograph of National Laws in the First Decade of the 21st Century

    No full text
This text approaches public educational language policies regarding the provision of foreign languages in Brazil and in Uruguay in the first decade of the 21st century. It aims to discuss the interpretation of national laws, from the three units chosen for the development of a comparative study, namely: place, time, and policies. The study is meritorious for supporting a situated valuation of the most significant elements of the comparison, and for showing the complexity of the proposal and of the understanding of these policies. The analyses show that in the laws that provide for foreign languages in education in both countries, the south-south connection did not have a prominent position in the selected period, only a consensual one.KEYWORDS: public language policies; foreign languages; Brazil; Uruguay; 21st century
