This book aims to examine the current state of systemic racism in the United States as compared to baseline data collected in 1969. DANCETAG: Using Sensors to Improve Feedback Given to Dance Students
The structure of dance classrooms has remained unchanged for several years. Very little, if any, technology has been incorporated to improve the quality of teaching. This has motivated our research project, whose goal is to capture dance movements with wearable sensors, to develop DANCETAG (Data Analytics and Notation with Captured Event Tagging). This is a platform that allows the gathering of data captured by Sony’s Mocopi sensors and annotating them with the dancer\u27s movements. The Mocopi sensors make up a motion capture system. It is comprised of six small, round sensors that can be attached to velcro straps and clips. An individual can wear the sensors and connect them to the app provided by Sony. Afterward, the Sony app can be connected to DANCETAG to gather data captured by the sensors in a Biovision Hierarchy (BVH) file. We conducted a pilot session to evaluate the procedure, data collection, and functionality of the app. We performed the study in a space where the participant was able to move freely. Researchers told the participant which movement to perform and then captured the motion. Based on these results, we have determined changes needed to be implemented in future versions of DANCETAG in order to test it with a higher number of participants. We hypothesize that by collecting and annotating the movement, we will be able to compare dancers\u27 data and provide feedback accordingly. With this type of feedback, dance students will be able to improve their dancing abilities through a more accessible technological tool
Resistencia artística bajo dictaduras en Argentina y España a través de la lente de las teorías de comunicación
Under dictatorships in Spain and Argentina, artists used their mediums to criticize the actions of the Catholic church and oppressive conditions enforced by the government, using allegories, metaphors, and symbolism in their art. While many artists tried to create works that fell within authoritarian guidelines, others intentionally created cinema and literature criticizing the Argentine and Spanish governments, values, and practices, knowing the works would be banned. This investigation uses examples of cinema and literature created and published deliberately to be prohibited or censored under the regimen of Francisco Franco from 1939-1975 in Spain or the last civil-military dictatorship from 1976-1983 in Argentina. McCombs and Lewis’ Framing Theory (Agenda-setting Theory), Hall’s Reception Theory, and Bunn’s New Censorship Theory are useful tools for understanding message creation, transmission, and reception. These theories aid in interpreting how decisions regarding the creation and censorship of art are made. Designing for Collaborative Teacher Learning Through Mixed- Reality Teaching Simulations
How do novice teachers learn to lead controversial issue discussions in justice-oriented ways that simultaneously attend to today’s contentious political climate and the pedagogical complexity of the task? This paper analyzes teacher learning using mixed-reality simulation technology to approximate a controversial discussion about Dobbs v. Jackson (2022) and abortion jurisprudence. This paper explores the design, affordances, and limitations of teacher learning via collective pedagogical reasoning when novice teachers grapple with a polarized, emotionally-laden, and fraught topic: abortion. We frame our work as engaging with and challenging practice-based teacher education models to focus on the power of culturally situated and collaborative pedagogical reasoning within the shared experience of the mixed-reality simulation to shape teacher learning

Influencers: The Power of Comments
Many customers choose products based on information from social media influencers. Companies can pay these influencers to promote their products. We develop a model in which customers read an influencer’s sponsored post for a mix of entertainment and product information, and those who purchase the product can leave comments for future customers. We derive conditions in which a large celebrity influencer endorses all products, whereas a microinfluencer adopts a policy of endorsing only high-quality products. In equilibrium, the microinfluencer screens for high-quality products so his followers do not waste time reading informative comments about low-quality products. By contrast, the celebrity influencer attracts so many uninformative comments his followers do not use his comments as a source of product information, and the value of his endorsement arises solely from generating product awareness
Archaeology in Space: The Sampling Quadrangle Assemblages Research Experiment (SQuARE) on the International Space Station. Report 1: Squares 03 and 05
Between January and March 2022, crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS) performed the first archaeological fieldwork in space, the Sampling Quadrangle Assemblages Research Experiment (SQuARE). The experiment aimed to: (1) develop a new understanding of how humans adapt to life in an environmental context for which we are not evolutionarily adapted, using evidence from the observation of material culture; (2) identify disjunctions between planned and actual usage of facilities on a space station; (3) develop and test techniques that enable archaeological research at a distance; and (4) demonstrate the relevance of social science methods and perspectives for improving life in space. In this article, we describe our methodology, which involves a creative re-imagining of a long-standing sampling practice for the characterization of a site, the shovel test pit. The ISS crew marked out six sample locations (“squares”) around the ISS and documented them through daily photography over a 60-day period. Here we present the results from two of the six squares: an equipment maintenance area, and an area near exercise equipment and the latrine. Using the photographs and an innovative webtool, we identified 5,438 instances of items, labeling them by type and function. We then performed chronological analyses to determine how the documented areas were actually used. Our results show differences between intended and actual use, with storage the most common function of the maintenance area, and personal hygiene activities most common in an undesignated area near locations for exercise and waste
Impact of Land Use Dynamics on the Water Yields in the Gorgan River Basin
This research investigates the future dynamics of water yield services in the Gorgan River Basin in the North of Iran by analyzing land cover changes from 1990 to 2020, using Landsat images and predicting up to 2040 with the Land Change Modeler and InVEST model under three scenarios: continuation, conservation, and mitigation. The results indicate significant shifts in agricultural land impacted water yields, which fluctuated from 324.7 million cubic meters (MCM) in 1990 to 279.7 MCM in 2010, before rising to 320.1 MCM by 2020. The study uniquely assesses the effects of land use changes on water yields, projecting a 13.6 % increase in water yield by 2040 under the continuation scenario, a 3.9 % increase under conservation, and a 1.6 % decrease under mitigation, which limits changes on steep slopes to prevent soil erosion and floods. This underscores the interplay between land use, vegetation cover, and water yield, emphasizing strategic land management for water resource preservation and effective watershed management in the GRB
