Combining Static and Dynamic Myofascial Dry Cupping Therapy to Improve Local and Regional Symptoms in Individuals with Low Back Pain: A Case Series
Introduction
Chronic low back pain is a common musculoskeletal healthcare presentation with an expense of over $100 billion annually. The clinical effect of myofascial cupping on pain and function is not clear, especially when different cupping techniques are combined. The purpose of this case series was to explore changes in pain and function following local static and distal dynamic myofascial dry cupping treatments in patients with chronic low back pain. Three adults from the general population received three ten-minute treatment sessions, 48 hours between each session, of static dry cupping to the low back followed by dynamic myofascial cupping of the quadriceps and hamstring musculature. Outcome measures were taken at two different time points within one-week per participant. Subjective measures included the numeric pain rating scale and the Oswestry Disability Index, objective measures included passive straight leg raise measurements, and pressure pain threshold. Results and Discussion
Local static combined with distal dynamic myofascial cupping reduced pain, pain sensitivity and perceived disability, and improved hamstring muscle extensibility in all three participants. These encouraging results support the initiation of a larger controlled trial aimed at investigating the efficacy of combined dry cupping interventions to treat musculoskeletal dysfunction and pain. 8th Annual Chapman Staff Art Exhibition Program
The Leatherby Libraries Hall of Art was established to showcase the creativity of the Chapman community. It was dedicated for this purpose in 2014 although the space has been available for staff and student exhibits since 2011. While past staff art exhibits featured work by Leatherby Libraries staff members only, this is our sixth year opening up the exhibit to any interested staff member of Chapman University.
The 16 artists represented here demonstrate the wide variety of talent at our university. From photography to painting, weaving to sculpture, the works you see here provide a unique opportunity to view and appreciate the diverse creative gifts of Chapman staff. For many of the artists this exhibit allows them the first opportunity to display their work publicly and has been a rewarding experience for them. Study the Global Earthquake Patterns That Follow the St. Patrick’s Day Geomagnetic Storms of 2013 and 2015
A response of global seismic activity to the geomagnetic storms of St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) in 2013 and 2015 is investigated. These two storms occurred during nearly identical storm sudden commencement times and similar solar flux levels. We have revealed a rather similar pattern of the most substantial earthquakes that have occurred since these storms. Two major crust continental earthquakes, in Iran (M = 7.7), 16 April 2013, and in Nepal (M = 7.8), 25 April 2015, have occurred with a time delay of ~30 and ~39 days after geomagnetic storm onsets in 2013 and 2015, respectively. After that, the great and major deep-focused earthquakes occurred beneath the Sea of Okhotsk (M = 8.3, 24 May 2013, Russia) and the Pacific Ocean (M = 7.8, 30 May 2015, Japan) with a time delay of ~68 and ~74 days, respectively. Geomagnetic storm onsets occurred at 06:04 UT in 2013 and 04:48 UT in 2015. At this time, the high latitudinal areas of the longitudinal regions, in which the mentioned earthquakes occurred in the future, were located under the polar cusp, where the solar wind plasma has direct access to the Earth’s environment. An analysis of the remaining ten earthquakes with M ≥ 7.5, which occurred around the globe in 2013 and 2015, proved the above findings that seismic activity may respond to geomagnetic storm onset with a time delay from some days to some months
Impact of Phytosanitary Irradiation on Polar Antioxidants in Peels of ‘Granny Smith’ Apples
The ‘Granny Smith’ apple (Malus domestica Borkh), known for its bright green peel and tart flavor, is a significant cultivar in the United States. Due to increasing limitations and restrictions on chemical fumigants and other treatments, ionizing radiation is gaining popularity as a phytosanitary treatment to prevent the spread of pests while preserving food quality. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of gamma, e-beam, and X-ray irradiation on phenolic compounds, vitamin C content, and total antioxidant capacity in ‘Granny Smith’ apple peels. The results indicated that there were no significant changes in vitamin C content immediately following irradiation. However, after four months of storage, gamma-treated peels showed a decrease in ascorbic acid and an increase in dehydroascorbic acid, while e-beam and X-ray treatments did not show significant changes. Phenolic content initially decreased for all treatments and increased after storage, with gamma irradiation showing the most significant increase even though the dose delivered for gamma was less than e-beam and X-ray treatments. The antioxidant capacity, measured by the ABTS and DPPH assay, revealed that the antioxidant capacity in irradiated samples decreased after storage. These findings suggest that the low dose rate associated with gamma irradiation might enhance specific antioxidant properties while impacting vitamin C oxidation more profoundly than e-beam and X-ray treatments
Creating the E-Buzz around Collaborative and Collective DEI Efforts in Academic Libraries
Like many academic libraries, the Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University (USA) is committed to supporting and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for students, faculty, researchers, and staff and has increased its efforts in the last several years to reflect that commitment through its resources, services, and outreach activities. However, in the wider literature, the efforts of scholarly communication librarians in DEI initiatives outside of openaccess advocacy are less discussed. Nevertheless, precisely because scholarly communication librarians are concerned with advancing the dissemination of knowledge, they fit naturally into DEI efforts that seek to elevate new or historically marginalized voices and can and should work with library marketing teams to increase the reach and impact of those efforts. This paper focuses on several collaborations between the DEI and marketing librarian and the scholarly communication librarian and invites all library workers to imagine new and unique collaborative opportunities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within their institutions
Midwest Data Librarian Symposium: A Model for Regional Communities
The Midwest Data Librarian Symposium (MDLS) is an annual unconference covering data and data librarianship. The symposium aims to provide a venue for librarians and others interested in the topics to network, discuss issues related to research data management, and learn from each other. While most of the attendees are from the Midwest area, the symposium is open to all.
MDLS is a community-led effort and has no governing body. In this article, we share our experiences in contributing to MDLS, including the recent MDLS 2023. Coming up on its tenth year in 2024, we believe MDLS offers a valuable model for low-cost, regional professional development
Interoception in Pregnancy: Implications for Peripartum Depression
In this perspective piece, we propose a novel mechanistic framework for peripartum depression in which improved interoceptive functioning in pregnancy and postpartum typically protects against depressive symptoms, but when there is a failure to improve interoception, the result is an inability to maintain metabolic efficiency, which ultimately poses risk for depression. First, we will review an emerging theory that links the modeling and predictive regulation of metabolic resources as central to the expression of many depressive symptoms. Then, focusing on the period of pregnancy to articulate the framework, we will discuss the physiological changes induced by pregnancy that place an increased metabolic demand on the pregnant mother. Following, we will address the neural and physiological changes of pregnancy that may enable enhanced interoception during this period of life. We will then review factors (e.g., childhood adversity) that may modulate pregnancy related changes in interoception. To demonstrate how the framework just described in pregnancy extends to the postpartum period, we will then discuss how the unique neurobiology and psychological features of the postpartum period, relative to during pregnancy, act to maintain high metabolic demands on the mother, as well as impact interoception in ways that can lead to resilience or risk for postpartum depression. We end by highlighting potential treatment targets suggested by our framework
