Students Bypass the Syllabus to Utilize Alternate LMS Locations for Assignment Deadlines
The syllabus is a required document for all courses to provide students with course information, policies, and assignment deadlines. The goals of this study were to investigate students’ perception of the role of the syllabus, preferred location of assignment deadlines, and preferred style of receiving deadline notifications. Faculty (n = 14) and students (n = 324) from community colleges through professional schools were invited to participate and complete a survey. We used a mixed-method design of survey questions, and the results demonstrated that students defined a syllabus as both a contract and a learning tool and that it should be flexible. Students ranked assignment deadlines as the most important part of the syllabus, yet a follow-up question indicated that most referred to four distinct locations in their learning management system (LMS) to find these deadlines. Although students preferred to receive deadline notifications on their smartphones, they also wanted to be reminded by faculty in class. This study helps faculty to obtain a glimpse of current student practices. We recommend that faculty communicate with students the role and expected use of the syllabus in their course while emphasizing its use to identify deadlines. This renewed practice will be time well spent to avoid student confusion and missed deadlines
Communication between China and the West
In the twenty-first century the world is facing issues arising in areas which previously seemed to be stable and peaceful. For almost half a century, since China–USA relations normalised, China and the West have engaged in various activities, contributing not only to life of their citizenry, but also providing the basis for a large variety of research in different areas, including communication studies. Examinations of communication between these two different civilisations fit perfectly into the discipline of intercultural communication which help unravel specific differences and narrow gaps between these civilisations.
Particular attention is given to philosophical aspects which reveal the origins of communication characteristics of each of the two civilisations such as ancient ethical-philosophical schools of the East and interplay of religion and philosophy of the West. A major concern of scholars that the field of communication is dominated by Western ideas and thus helps to disseminate Western values led to expansion of a research pool on non-Western approaches and resulted in the formation of an alternative perspective on communication rooted in the Eastern tradition.
This effort is joined by other social sciences studies, which added significantly to a corpus of research works on China–Western relations – discourse, new media, national image, etc. Many scholars addressed the level of interpersonal relations, examining communication between representatives of different cultures. Technological progress expanded the ways of conducting communication assisting the communication flows and easing the ways how people from across the world can ensure their communication to occur.
The field of research in communication between China and the West is still growing with a need for further development of new theories based on such practices. A particular emphasis in research on cases of successful communication between China and the West could counter the dominance of literature presenting only negative aspects. Even though the area of communication studies between China and the West is well-established with a history of almost fifty years, it still represents an emerging area of research demanding more rigorous critique, more thorough examination, and more original contributions.https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/communication_books/1024/thumbnail.jp
At a Crossroads: The Crucial Role of Pharmacists in Healthcare Teams to End the HIV Epidemic
Therapeutic advances in treatment and prevention have slowed the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic, yet the virus and complications related to it still claim an alarming 630,000 lives globally every year.1,2 The United States’ goals for the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative include reducing new infections by 90% by the year 2030 and advancing health equity through key treatment and prevention initiatives.3 Multiple agencies, professions, and patient groups are working diligently to achieve the EHE goals. Pharmacists have long recognized that our profession is a key resource in ending the HIV epidemic. We demonstrate this in the work pharmacists perform on the front lines to support direct patient care and public health initiatives. Now, well over 40 years into the HIV epidemic, there is an opportunity to reflect. Have we reached the peak of what pharmacists can achieve, or is there more that remains to be done to increase our reach, effectiveness, and impact on the lives of people living with HIV? If there is more that pharmacists can contribute, what are the things limiting critical progress in this field? In this commentary we briefly summarize the current state of pharmacists’ contributions to ending the HIV epidemic and highlight some gaps to concentrate further efforts upon
Progress Is Progress: A Collective Narrative Inquiry Exploring the Experiences of Social Justice Educators in a Private, PK–Eighth Grade School
Since 2020, education in the United States has been impacted by a tumultuous and divisive sociopolitical context. After echoes of progress in 2020, education witnessed retrenchments and rollbacks with an influx of anticritical raced theory measures, book bans, and an uptick of parental control initiatives in schools across the country. Private education had an opportunity to respond to a call for social improvements regarding racial equity and LGBTQ+ representation and adapt their curriculum to address the concerns of historically marginalized populations through diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice (DEIJ) initiatives. Rooted in a theoretical framework of critical pedagogy, this study explored the experience of private school PK–eighth grade educators as they navigated a challenging social and political context. Invested in social justice work, these educators discussed educational spaces that centered DEIJ content. In a qualitative, collective, and coconstructed narrative inquiry, a dialogue group of seven educators met over the course of a school year and shared stories that reflected what their students and classes were grappling with each day. The educators’ stories and data revealed the challenges and successes of teachers in private, independent schools as they pursued DEIJ work in classroom settings. The findings of this study indicated DEIJ content and topics were present in the school community with students and teachers, dialogical spaces fostered humanizing communities, educators developed critical consciousness, private schools maintained oppressive systems, and teachers experienced disillusionment during the first Trump era
Assessing access to art therapy programs among individuals in the foster care system
Research shows that youth in foster care who exit care, struggle with education, employment, and overall health compared to the non-fostered general population. Despite being useful, there is minimal research on art therapy being used as a resource for youth in foster care. This research assesses access to art therapy programs among youth in foster care. If art therapy resources are offered, the study aims to determine if they generally improve children\u27s attitudes and outlooks toward the future, and whether these resources ought to be implemented or referred to youth in foster care. Seven professionals working with youth in foster care participated in interviews focused on common needs among youth in care, youth’s general outlooks, art therapy availability, and whether art therapy improved youth’s future outlooks. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded for recurring themes. Six prevalent themes emerged across interviews: communication tools, receptiveness, regulation tools, arts integration, benefit of control, and barriers to access. Participants reported art therapy helped to providing youth with non-verbal communication tools. Professionals noted that youth in foster care are more receptive to art therapy compared to traditional talk-therapy, giving them a means to express themselves more appropriately. Many participants revealed that art therapy provided youth with regulatory tools. Nearly all participants revealed that barriers to access art therapy included lack of funding and service providers. Although some participants conveyed a lack of art therapy resources, many reported integrating art into traditional therapy practices to build rapport and trust with youth. Youth in foster care are at risk of instability as adults. Access to art therapy programs appear to be limited. Art therapy could mitigate future instability by warming youth up to therapy and providing them with a healthy coping skills
Computational logP Calculations and Determination of Lipophilicity Values of Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives
The addictive effect of opioids impacted 60 million people globally in 2023. This opioid crisis necessitates the development of opioid derivatives that maintain analgesic efficacy while minimizing addictive effects from opioid use. The present work focuses on morphine, a commonly prescribed opioid with high affinity to the mu-opioid receptor (MOR). Morphine binds non-selectively within both healthy and inflamed tissue. By modifying morphine’s structure through fluorination to counteract its non-selective binding, the drug’s pharmacological ability to provide effective pain relief comes with a lower risk of addiction. Specifically, the addition of fluorine to differing beta positions of the main binding site leads to the reduction in pKa (pKa: 6.1-7.83) in comparison to morphine’s pKa (8.2). This reduction in pKa induces specificity to binding within inflamed tissues while avoiding binding within healthy central tissues. We aim to compare the lipophilicity of fluoromorphine derivatives and their connection to pKa and analgesic effects. Lipophilicity, often measured by the partition coefficient (logP), plays a crucial role in morphine\u27s ability to cross lipid membranes, potentially influencing its interaction with MOR. LogP is calculated using logP = (Gibbs Free Energy (water) HFE - Gibbs Free Energy (octanol) SFE)/RT(ln(10)). Calculations are performed in the Keck Computational Research Cluster through the use of Gaussian 16 and Gaussview 6 to model the derivatives computationally. These results will provide insight into potentially increasing the affinity of binding selectively in lower acidity tissues through fluorination of morphine and increased lipophilicity, leading to increased analgesia
Exploring the Sublime through Sound Design: A Multiplatform Approach
The world around us has always vibrated with constant sound. That audio provides context for everyday activity, the background against which all life is played. To highlight its significance in the human experience, this study explores the impact of audio on emotion through my sound design for Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins\u27 morality play Everybody. Creating and describing the design process, this study seeks to discover how sound influences emotional response, shapes mood, and complements visual elements. Aiming to discern what soothes or incites audiences, the design focuses on a juxtaposition between familiar and unfamiliar sounds. Special attention is paid to base elements like strings, human voices, and synthesizers, which are used to create a soundscape that resonates with both familiarity and novelty. Sonification, the study of turning data into sound, also informs the design of specific auditory elements, allowing for the translation of information to sonic experience that engages the audience on multiple levels. Similarly, exploration of the use of sound in horror genres on radio and film aids in the creation of suspenseful, unsettling soundscapes that can further evoke fear or unease in the audience. Additionally, a deeper look at the psychology of music’s emotional effects informs an understanding of how music affects human brain function, central to designing a soundscape that capitalizes this modern information in order to resonate with the audience on a deeper psychological level. The utilization of several tools such as Ableton Live, QLab, and Logic Pro are essential in the creation of the design. An abstract auditory mirror reflects and amplifies the emotions depicted on stage through the soundscapes and musical pieces that grow and change over the duration of Everybody. The information gained through research deepens our understanding of sound design’s ability to enrich a story, offering valuable insight for the field of auditory aesthetics
Nuclear Nightmares: The American Fear of Iranian Nuclear Attacks and Foreign Policy
In an age of escalating tensions in the Middle East, the American public has to watch with a wary eye for a conflict in which the United States has to get involved overseas. In this paper, I examine the extent to which religiosity influences Americans’ fear of Iranian nuclear attacks. Using Chapman University’s Survey of American Fears, a nationally representative survey asking Americans about what scares them the most, I find an increase in the fear of Iranian nuclear strikes as a respondent’s religiosity increases. In religious circles, fears can be greatly manipulated by the words of a single authority, which could increase the fear of nuclear strikes. Following the influence of religiosity, I also will connect religious concerns over Iranian nuclear strikes with who respondents voted for in the 2020 presidential election. Looking into other variables, I also consider the influence of a respondent’s consumption of nightly national news sources, finding a relationship between frequent viewership and fear. Finally, I also found a link between lower levels of education and greater fears of Iran’s capabilities. Public opinion has the power to define American foreign policy, and with so much fear surrounding Iranian nuclear capabilities, the future of relations in the Middle East will be influenced by the striking fear of Iran
