    Get PDF
Leatherby Libraries Librarians are committed to supporting and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, faculty, researchers, and staff. We demonstrate this commitment holistically through the provision of all resources and services in support of teaching, learning, and research. Our goal is to reduce obstacles to accessing diverse research resources, services, learning, and engagement through educational outreach in order to raise awareness of diversity related issues. In 2020, Library administration selected a Diversity and Outreach librarian that was charged with creating a comprehensive Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and Outreach plan. As a result, a number of practices and initiatives were implemented in collaboration with the Chair of Resources and Scholarly Communications that are cohesive and focused on DEI and marketing and promotion of related electronic resources and digital repositories. In this presentation, the Assistant Dean for DEI and the Chair of Resources and Scholarly Communications will showcase how they found opportunities for innovation and collaboration through a variety of DEI digital projects and how they effectively and strategically spread the word about them. These initiatives include Connect to Knowledge, the longest-running, award-winning blog series to promote electronic resources and library digital initiatives; a collaboration to acquire the Black Historical Newspapers collection, a critical primary resource; the Sikh Initiatives at Chapman University, an award-winning digital initiative; DEI virtual exhibits and bibliographies; and more

Beneath the Beauty: A Mixed Method Approach to Examining Identity Negotiation Among Asian Transracial Adoptees

Making sense of one’s identity is an integral part of the human experience. This study examines identity negotiation and sense-making processes among individuals who have particularly complex identities: Asian transracial adoptees. In the past six decades, more than 280,000 infants and children in Asian countries were abandoned or surrendered to social welfare institutes and were subsequently adopted by American families, making Asian transracial adoptees (ATRAs) a substantial, if frequently overlooked, proportion of the Asian American community. Prior research indicates that identity negotiation is a particularly daunting task for this demographic due to ever-present paradoxical feelings toward their identity, as they are phenotypically of one race but are raised within families and cultures of another. This study takes an adoptee-centered approach to examining the struggle and resilience of the ATRA diaspora by efficacy testing a brief intervention, to demonstrate how media narratives can positively impact ATRA self-concept and self-esteem. Guided by the meaning-making model and communicated narrative sense-making theory (CNSM), this study uses a three-phase exploratory, sequential, and mixed-method design. Phase 1 used a secondary data analysis of in- depth, qualitative interviews with ATRAs (n = 14) to understand what stories about adoption they wished the media were telling. This phase laid an ATRA-centered basis for the intervention. Results indicated that participants wanted to see media narratives about adoption that are: (1) created by adoptees, (2) portray the complexities of transracial adoption, and (3) normalize the adoptee identity. Building on these findings, Phase 2 participants (n = 90) stimulus-tested two media narratives that fit ATRAs’ aforementioned criteria. Phase 3 efficacy tested the brief intervention. Participants (n = 66) were randomly assigned to an experimental group (i.e., viewing the media narrative and engaging in discussion) or a comparison group (i.e., only viewed the media narrative). Results indicated that although the brief intervention did not significantly increase ATRA well-being in the experimental condition, participants’ qualitative reports demonstrate benefits to well-being from partaking in the experiment. The theory-driven approach for developing and testing this mediated intervention contributes to, and extends, literature on the importance of positive media portrayals for individuals in marginalized communities

Nanogels have emerged as a notably safer and more effective means for drug delivery, primarily due to their adjustable drug-loading capabilities. Hollow-core nanoparticles offer some unique properties that are desirable for drug delivery applications. Initially, silica core nanoparticles were synthesized using the Stöber process at different temperatures where Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of ethanol and then a condensation reaction to form silica nanoparticles. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Optical Microscopy (OM) analysis revealed that the size of silica core particles varied with the synthesis temperature (300 nm at 30°C to 150 at 60°C). The core silica particles were first coated with 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MPS) layers and used as seeds to grow ultra-low-cross linked thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (NIPAm) shells using surfactant-free emulsion polymerization reaction. SEM and OM (differential contrast Interference Contrast) confirmed the addition of the NIPAm shell. The core was dissolved to get hollow shell nanogels. These hollow shell nanogels are very good candidates for drug delivery applications due to the presence of a hollow compartment in their structures

In the realm of academic librarianship, the role of business librarians is undergoing a significant evolution, expanding to include a holistic approach that integrates diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles, fosters collaborative partnerships, leverages advanced technology, and employs innovative strategies to boost educational quality and prepare students for the complexities of the global economy. At Chapman University, this evolution is exemplified by a series of groundbreaking initiatives that seamlessly blend business artificial intelligence, data and information literacy, and DEI practices into the core library services and programming. A focal point of these initiatives is the creation of specialized information literacy rubrics, particularly designed for students in fields such as economics, accounting, and marketing. These rubrics aim to refine students\u27 analytical and decision-making prowess. Moreover, the university has significantly broadened access to pivotal business databases, enriching both research capabilities and literacy. An illustration of this commitment is the successful acquisition of a notable grant for the Accelerate California: Inclusive Innovation Hub initiative, demonstrating a steadfast dedication to utilizing DEI as a catalyst for entrepreneurship and economic prosperity, with a focus on uplifting underrepresented communities. Among the notable projects are the implementation of an AI-powered data analytics tool that enhances students\u27 ability to interpret complex datasets, and a partnership with local businesses to integrate real-world case studies into the curriculum, providing practical experience and exposure to current industry challenges. These efforts are complemented by a series of workshops and seminars designed to address societal issues, thereby affirming the library\u27s pivotal role as a force for social change and a champion of embedded librarianship. This presentation will delve into the array of strategies and initiatives that highlight the pivotal role of business librarianship in fostering inclusive innovation, driving economic growth, and empowering diverse communities within the academic landscape

    Lunar Femininity

This piece comprises photographs I have taken, drawings I have made, and found images. I hoped to convey a dreamy, hand-crafted quality using subtle colors, sketches, and scrapbooking tape from my notebooks. I look at my younger self through the velvet curtains that used to hang in my grandparent\u27s bedroom. I am turned away in both images implying we can\u27t see our future, however, we can look back upon the past with more understanding. I hope we can all learn to be gentle with our younger selves and forgiving of the mistakes we make as humans. A portrait of an infant carried by a moth is an expression of how ephemeral childhood is. Innocence is as fragile as the wings of a moth and can so easily be destroyed by malevolent hands. I had the privilege of seeing the statue of Juliet in Verona, Italy where people were taking pictures of themselves touching the breasts of the statue. Apparently, this is a good luck charm. I was confused by this tradition. It seems even a woman (rather a girl, as the character of Juliet was 13 years old) made of bronze cannot escape groping hands. Women have been written as evil seducers, bringing ruin to great men. I employed the image of an apple plucked by a male hand to ask the question, why was it written that Eve picked the forbidden fruit rather than Adam? Why is it that all women kind would then suffer punishment until the end of time for a story written by a male prophet? In Ovid\u27s Metamorphoses, Neptune rapes Medusa and she is transformed into a snake-haired monster as punishment for this assault. She is eventually killed and decapitated by the story\u27s hero. Why are violence, violation, and the vilification of women so prevalent throughout history and in modern-day culture

Lifelong Movie Goers, Hardworking Filmmakers, and Oscars Discourse

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the discourse surrounding the Academy Awards, often referred to as the Oscars. The differences in discourse between people working in the film industry and those who watch movies are analyzed, as they represent the supplier and recipient of films and filmmaking. These two groups offer varied perspectives on the topic. The discourse of another group, a group in-between–student filmmakers–is also analyzed. To many people, what makes a film “good” is quite subjective, so the Academy Awards are often a subject of discourse. One particular focus of discourse will be the 2024 Academy Awards. There were a variety of opinions on the film Barbie’s nominations; people were particularly upset that Margot Robbie was not nominated for the Best Actress category, and that Greta Gerwig was not nominated for the Best Director category

An Examination of Missing Person Social Media Engagement Through Data Mining and Experimentation: An Application of the Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication Model

    Get PDF
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), approximately 600,000 individuals are reported missing each year in the United States (2022). When missing person cases do not meet alert (e.g., AMBER) criteria, law enforcement often utilize social media to crowdsource information to ultimately return the missing home. Therefore, guided by the crisis and emergency risk communication model (CERC; Reynolds & Seeger, 2005) and its recently clarified propositions (Miller et al., 2021), the purpose of this dissertation was to (a) identify strategies law enforcement use to crowdsource missing person information and (b) experimentally test message characteristics that facilitate prosocial sharing of missing person posts on social media. In study one, a quantitative content analysis of 600 extracted missing person X (Twitter) posts identified that all CERC model message characteristics (i.e., timeliness, accuracy, source credibility, empathy, action-orientation, respect) were present in current law enforcement crowdsourcing posts. Additionally, a linear regression analysis indicated that timeliness, empathy, and respect predict message engagement (i.e., retweets, likes, replies) and were used to inform experimental messages in study two. In study two, participants (N = 377) who were 18 years or older and use X (Twitter) were randomly assigned one pilot tested experimental missing person message (i.e., timeliness, empathy, respect, or control). Parallel multiple mediation analyses indicated that timeliness is positively related to self-efficacy and uncertainty; empathy is positively related to self-efficacy, knowledge of risks and resources, and emotional turmoil; and respect is positively related to self-efficacy and uncertainty as well as negatively related to emotional turmoil. Additionally, self-efficacy, uncertainty, and emotional turmoil are positively related to behavioral intention whereas only self-efficacy and emotional turmoil can predict actual behavior. Finally, indirect relationships exist between timeliness and behavioral intention through self-efficacy and uncertainty; empathy and behavioral intention through self-efficacy and emotional turmoil; as well as respect and behavioral intention through self-efficacy, uncertainty, and emotional turmoil. This inquiry offers theoretical implications by being one of the first to experimentally investigate the recently clarified propositions of the CERC model. Practically, this work provides law enforcement with clear recommendations on crafting missing person messages on social media

    No full text
Amphipathic Hybrid Cyclic-Linear Peptides as a Drug Delivery System by Jonathan A. Moreno Peptides [RW]4 and [R5W4] have been previously identified as molecular transporter Cell Penetrating Peptide (CPP) and antimicrobial agents, respectively. These peptides consisted of alternating and non-alternating arginine (R) as positively charged residues and tryptophan (W) as hydrophobic residues. Herein we report the synthesis of two hybrid amphipathic cyclic-linear cell-penetrating peptides [RW]4K-AH135 (1) and [R5W4]K-AH135 (2) composed of [RW]4 and [R5W4] and a linear peptide AH-135 (Ac)NH-RWLRRWLRWWRR-COOH. The hybrid peptides were assessed for their antimicrobial activity and capacity to deliver small and large molecules, including proteins. Remarkably, (2) exhibited superior efficiency as an anticancer drug delivery system. Consequently, nonacetylated (2) was fluorescently labeled with FITC using a short β-alanine linker, resulting in [R5W4]K-AH135(βA)-F\u27 (3), to investigate its mechanistic uptake. Similarly, Doxorubicin (DOX) was conjugated to Peptide (2) through a β-alanine, glutarate linker, resulting in [R5W4]K–RRWWRLWRRLWRβA–DOX (4). Antiproliferative assays compared the efficacy of the peptide-DOX conjugate (PDC) to free DOX and its peptide-DOX physical mixtures in cancer cell lines. Conjugate (4) exhibited higher cytotoxicity against cancer cells at concentrations of 5 μM and 8 μM compared to free DOX at 5 μM. After 72 h of incubation, the conjugate inhibited the viability of ovarian adenocarcinoma (SK-OV-3) cells by 63%, and breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) by 74% and 66%, respectively, in comparison to the free drug 31%, 41%, and 48% in each cell line. The PDC showed lower toxicity towards healthy myocardial cells (H9C2) with 80% cell viability compared to 60% for free DOX. It exhibited higher activity against DOX- vi resistant cells (MES-SA/MX2) with only 13% cell viability compared to 84% for the free DOX treatment. Mechanistic studies revealed that DOX transport occurred through direct translocation and caveolae-mediated endocytosis. Analytical HPLC monitored the stability of the DOX conjugate in various media, and the glutarate linker was found to undergo acid-catalyzed hydrolysis, releasing its payload with a half-life of 14 h. Intracellular release experiments demonstrated approximately 100% release of free DOX from the conjugate within 72 h. Conjugate 4 markedly enhances cancer cell apoptosis by 7-fold compared to DOX alone and induces a 1.7-fold increase in G2/M phase cell cycle arrest

Spatiotemporal Gait Parameter Consistency Across Two Days of Treadmill Walking in Stroke Survivors

Retraining impaired gait is essential in post-stroke recovery. This project aims to determine between day variability of spatiotemporal gait measures in treadmill walking post-stroke to differentiate between changes due to the intervention and measurement errors due to between day test-retest variability. Six individuals post-stroke performed a two-minute walk test at a self-selected speed (SSS) for two consecutive days. SSS was assessed through the six-minute walk test. Reflective markers were placed on anatomical landmarks (van den Bogert et al. 2013). The heel markers were used for step detection. We calculated spatiotemporal parameters: stride length, stride time, step length, stance time, and swing time for both paretic and nonparetic legs. We calculated the test-re-test intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) using a 2,1 model (Shrout, Fleiss 1979) the minimal detectable change (MDC). We list the correlation coefficients, ICC, and MDC values for each spatiotemporal variable. Stride length: r=0.995,
