    Alignment within Clinical Education Programs and the Clinical Site - Administrative Processes Assessment

    Purpose: There is a need for a bi-directional Clinical Education (CE) process performance assessment to establish a meaningful relationship between the Clinical Site (CS) and the University partner, one that assesses performance outcomes and stakeholder needs. While students evaluate clinical instructors (CI) and CS, no formal mechanism exists for CS and universities to evaluate each other, especially concerning administrative workflows and goal alignment within the CE placement process. The gap in collaborative, ongoing assessment may lead to a perceived lack of partnership value. This study aims to identify any existing clinical placement administrative performance tools that seek to align goals and direct action between the CE and CS. Methods/Description: Using the PRISMA protocol, a systematic search was conducted, covering CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and hand-searched databases about the administrative relationship between PT programs and CS’s. Key terms included clinical site or partner, preceptor, coordinator, physical therapy students, academic program, and stakeholder. The search results were independently screened by two researchers, with a third researcher resolving conflicts. Inclusion criteria ensured that the article discussed both the clinical site and academic institution, pertained to Physical Therapy and/or Physical Therapy Assistant programs, and addressed one of the following topics: administrative performance assessment, outcomes assessment, workflow design, or goal alignment. Results/Outcomes: The search yielded 329 studies, with 80 duplicates removed and 222 studies deemed irrelevant in the abstract round. Reasons for exclusion include conference abstracts, publications not discussing both PT academic institutions and Clinical Partners sites, publications focusing solely on student clinical performance, and publications merely identifying the theoretical need for administrative assessment without outlining concrete assessment solutions. Twenty-seven full texts were assessed for eligibility, resulting in the exclusion of 20 more studies for not meeting inclusion criteria. This led to seven studies being included that met the established criteria. Overarching themes of published studies included CE curricular development using the context/input/process/product model, survey development to profile clinical educator characteristics, and multi-attribute utility analysis to facilitate values-based partnerships. None of them were co-authored by academic institutions and clinical sites collaboratively. Further analysis is forthcoming. 2 Conclusion: There is a clear gap in recent evidence providing quantifiable tools to the University and CS CE administrators as they navigate their professional collaboration, particularly from the standpoint of administrative performance and continuous goal alignment. With 294 DPT programs in the United States, partnering with thousands of clinical sites, the need to create sustained value for both stakeholders is imperative. Publications from this review included input directing CE curricular changes and evaluating the needs of the CS, but only one study pilots a methodological framework for two-way academic partnership evaluation. Future research should seek to develop and empirically substantiate a bi-directional stakeholder needs assessment

    DANCETAG: Using Sensors to Improve Feedback Given to Dance Students

    The structure of dance classrooms has remained largely unchanged for years, with minimal integration of technology to enhance teaching. This has motivated our research project, which aims to capture dance movements using wearable sensors and translate the information into meaningful visualizations to help dancers improve their skills. As the first step in addressing the research question—can data from commercial wearables differentiate between the movements of dancers and non-dancers?—we developed DANCETAG (Data Analytics and Notation with Captured Event Tagging), a platform designed for data collection and movement annotation. We utilized Sony’s Mocopi sensors, a motion capture system with six sensors attached via velcro straps. These sensors connect to Sony’s app, transmitting data in Biovision Hierarchy (BVH) format for analysis. To answer the research question, we conducted a user study with 34 participants performing 30 movements. A professional dancer served as a baseline for comparing movements against other participants using the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm. Our initial visualization method generated heatmaps depicting these differences. Afterward, we grouped participants based on their dancing abilities: dancers (n=13), physically active individuals (n=18), and non-dancers (n=21). T-tests revealed significant differences between these groups, indicating that movements involving weight shifts showed greater similarity to the baseline than movements with more variation, such as walking. These findings suggest that wearable data analysis can effectively reveal movement similarities and differences among varying skill levels. We are currently developing alternative visualizations to provide practical insights for both instructors and students. Our goal is not to replace instructors with technology but to use it as a supplement to enhance feedback. This approach improves traditional teaching methods and introduces new possibilities for dance education. Future work will focus on refining visualizations and exploring additional technological applications.     One More Negative Regulator of AC6: S-Nitrosylation

    In this issue of the Journal, Maghsoudi and colleagues (pp. 82–96) report a series of studies that delineate the biochemical and pharmacological mechanism of this resistance (4). The study focuses on adenylyl cyclase (AC), an enzyme crucial for pulmonary vasodilation through its action of synthesizing cAMP. There are nine isoforms of AC (AC1–AC9) that are all stimulated by Gs but otherwise are distinct in their regulatory qualities, subcellular localization, and expression profiles throughout the body (5). AC6 plays a significant role in fetal and neonatal lung, especially in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells, where it is highly expressed. This isoform is characterized by its susceptibility to inhibition by a number of other signaling pathways, including calcium, protein kinase A, protein kinase C, and nitric oxide (NO) (6). AC6 is efficiently regulated by several G protein–coupled receptors by virtue of its colocalization in lipid raft microdomains of the plasma membrane of many cells (7)

    At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers’ attention focused heavily on K–12 student connectivity. By contrast, college students were largely “presumed connected,” even as they lost access to campus Wi-Fi, computer labs, and other digital resources. This study asks what lessons were learned and not learned by university administrators when it came to digital inequality on their campuses during the pandemic. To address this question, the article’s authors relied on a series of student surveys and policy analyses. This article offers evidence-based policy recommendations to university leaders for effectively addressing digital inequality among their student populations as we look beyond the pandemic

    Multimodal Assessment Battery and Heart Rate Variability Enhance Clinical Utility of Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test

    Context: The Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT) for exercise intolerance following concussion may highlight underlying autonomic dysfunction. Autonomic function at rest and with exertion may be predictive of neurocognitive performance for individuals with sports-related concussion. The purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility and utility of combining multimodal assessments with heart rate variability (HRV) measures during the BCTT for individuals with a remote history of concussion. Design: Prospective cohort study design, pretest/posttest. Methods: Participants included 5 males and 5 females (N = 10, age: 25.2 [3.3] y old, height: 173.2 [11.2] cm, mass: 73.4 [13.7] kg, body mass index: 24.5 [3.9], time since last concussion of 6.3 [4.5] y). All participants completed the multimodal assessment battery including: Concentration Reverse Digits (6 digits), Stroop Incongruent, and King–Devick Test under single- (seated) and dual-task conditions (walking on treadmill at 2.0 mph, 0% incline). Heart rate and HRV was collected at rest, during the BCTT, and during postexercise recovery. HRV data were processed and analyzed based on established protocols. Paired t tests were performed for pre- and postmeasurements separately for single- and dual-task tests of the multimodal assessment battery and HRV indices. Results: During the BCTT, HRV indices reflective of peripheral nervous system activity demonstrated a significant reduction with concomitant increase in HRV indices of sympathetic nervous system activity (P \u3c .05). Recovery in these HRV indices toward baseline was observed during postexercise recovery. Neurocognitive performance on the Stroop task significantly improved with exercise (P \u3c .05). Conclusion: Implementation of multimodal assessments to evaluate physiological and neurocognitive responses to exercise in individuals with history of sports-related concussion is feasible. Addition of these objective measures may decrease reliance on self-reporting of exercise-induced symptom exacerbation, enabling clinicians to identify individuals whose neurocognitive performance or physiologic response to exercise on the BCTT deviates from the expected

    This Symposium proposes eight leadership competencies, presented by experts in each area, as examples of ways in which leadership can be aligned with peace in order to bring about sustainable, positive change. This Symposium does not argue for just another list of leadership skills and practices, but rather, illustrates that when leadership competencies are intentionally combined with peace practices, we can engage in the work of peace leadership: leading our communities, organizations, and societies toward peace and equitable justice. Therefore, this Symposium utilizes these competencies as a “jumping off point” to nudge the field of leadership studies to begin to see the work we do as essential to peace and that taken together with key peace practices, leadership could be the conduit to what Amaladas (2024) called peace dwelling— our ability to live and be in peace with one another and the planet

    The Rise and Fall of an Aryanization Bank: The Romanian Credit Institute, 1941–1951

    Probably the most important domestic project of the pro-Nazi Antonescu regime, the policy of Romanianization of the economy had ambitious goals. It aimed to seize Jewish-owned real estate and to redistribute it to “deserving” Romanians, state agencies, and welfare organizations and to increase the share of ethnic Romanian entrepreneurs and skilled employees through purchasing Jewish companies, adopting business and labour restrictions against Jews and “foreigners,” training and funding ethnic Romanian professionals and would-be entrepreneurs, and establishing new companies to displace minority and foreign competitors. While this project looked feasible on paper, in practice, it faced major obstacles, including a lack of funds from aspiring ethnic Romanian entrepreneurs to buy Jewish companies or to create new ones. To address it, the authorities established the Romanian Credit Institute (ICR) to fund ethnic Romanians who wanted to acquire foreign and Jewish companies and, thus, to contribute to the so-called positive aspect of Romanianization. Drawing on petitions and official memos, reports, statistics, correspondence, and newspaper articles, this chapter examines the significant yet neglected history of the ICR Aryanization bank during the Second World War and immediate post-war period, including its “achievements” and setbacks, the criticism it faced, and continuities and changes in its activity.https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/history_books/1052/thumbnail.jp

    Discourse- and Lesion-based Aphasia Quotient Estimation Using Machine Learning

    Discourse is a fundamentally important aspect of communication, and discourse production provides a wealth of information about linguistic ability. Aphasia commonly affects, in multiple ways, the ability to produce discourse. Comprehensive aphasia assessments such as the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised (WAB-R) are time- and resource-intensive. We examined whether discourse measures can be used to estimate WAB-R Aphasia Quotient (AQ), and whether this can serve as an ecologically valid, less resource-intensive measure. We used features extracted from discourse tasks using three AphasiaBank prompts involving expositional (picture description), story narrative, and procedural discourse. These features were used to train a machine learning model to predict the WAB-R AQ. We also compared and supplemented the model with lesion location information from structural neuroimaging. We found that discourse-based models could estimate AQ well, and that they outperformed models based on lesion features. Addition of lesion features to the discourse features did not improve the performance of the discourse model substantially. Inspection of the most informative discourse features revealed that different prompt types taxed different aspects of language. These findings suggest that discourse can be used to estimate aphasia severity, and provide insight into the linguistic content elicited by different types of discourse prompts
