Moreover our construction leads also to a function considered by Hallström, Bowen and Macintyre, which has, as a particular value, the Kepler-Bouwkamp constant, and to a function considered by Zondadari, that vanishes only at prime numbers

    Examining The Roles of Women In Video Games: An Investigation of Gender Representation

    This research examines the roles of women in video games (both in characters and the gaming industry), the stereotypes which influence their portrayal, as well as the authorship of their narratives. In my research I will be investigating three aspects of gender representation in video games, particularly regarding the role of women: 1. the disproportionate ratios of male/female programmers in relation to the ratios of male/female players, and the effect this lack of diversity has on a woman\u27s role under the male gaze leading to the use of stereotypes in games, 2. the gendered aesthetics of video games and their characters, and 3. game development in relation to target audience. Using the methods outlined in the Information Literacy portion of the FFC program, I will be researching this topic using a variety of methods including use of the Leatherby Library database. Through this database I have found a variety of sources including journals and a master\u27s thesis, leading me to other online sources such as THE GAMER. Other sources include those addressed in my FFC class, Gender Bias in Social Media. I will also use ChatGPT as an experiment, asking the chatbot to describe a female video game character. I expect to find that women\u27s stories and perspectives in games are and will largely continue to be produced by male developers as they hold the majority of the gaming industry; no significant change can be made until diversity in the gaming industry is properly addressed and acted on, allowing women the space to create and share their stories and perspectives how they choose to. Evidence of this will be seen in the development of new games and the transition to supporting women in gaming

    The Kids from Yesterday: An Examination of the Motivations and Social Role of Camping Culture in Music Fandom

    With the return of arena concerts after the COVID-19 pandemic and the hyper-availability of social media communities to those who were not previously inclined to be fannish, there has been increased strain on the metrics of what makes a successful concert attendance, and further, how those metrics reinforce identity as both a real fan and a member of the fan group. This research focuses specifically on the act of arduous overnight queueing for general admission shows, referred to in the populace as “Camping Culture, aiming to answer the question of what is the motivation to undergo significant effort to experience the optimal concert as defined by the superfan. Interviews were conducted with music fans who have a strong attachment to one or more artists and regularly attend concerts under General Admission tickets. Additional research was collected through survey data, and observational fieldwork where the researcher acted as a participant-observer in concert queues at local shows. Both fan-artist and fan-fan relationships and interaction rituals are noted, and analyzed utilizing Durkheim’s theories of religion (1912) as well as subsequent framework by Löbert (2012) which categorizes these rites and rituals within the perspective of concert-attendance as a religious participation. Findings suggest that while the initial motivation to join the queue is the promise of a primary interaction with the sacred object (in this case, the artist), ultimately what keeps fans coming back are the secondary interaction rituals, forming bonds with other fans

    Hepatic LRP-1 Plays an Important Role in Amyloidosis in Alzheimer\u27s Disease Mice: Potential Role in Chronic Heavy Alcohol Feeding

    Background Hepatic lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP-1) plays a central role in peripheral amyloid beta (Aβ) clearance, but its importance in Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) pathology is understudied. Our previous work showed that intragastric alcohol feeding to C57BL/6 J mice reduced hepatic LRP-1 expression which correlated with significant AD-relevant brain changes. Herein, we examined the role of hepatic LRP-1 in AD pathogenesis in APP/PS1 AD mice using two approaches to modulate hepatic LRP-1, intragastric alcohol feeding to model chronic heavy drinking shown by us to reduce hepatic LRP-1, and hepato-specific LRP-1 silencing. Methods Eight-month-old male APP/PS1 mice were fed ethanol or control diet intragastrically for 5 weeks (n = 7–11/group). Brain and liver Aβ were assessed using immunoassays. Three important mechanisms of brain amyloidosis were investigated: hepatic LRP-1 (major peripheral Aβ regulator), blood-brain barrier (BBB) function (vascular Aβ regulator), and microglia (major brain Aβ regulator) using immunoassays. Spatial LRP-1 gene expression in the periportal versus pericentral hepatic regions was confirmed using NanoString GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler. Further, hepatic LRP-1 was silenced by injecting LRP-1 microRNA delivered by the adeno-associated virus 8 (AAV8) and the hepato-specific thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) promoter to 4-month-old male APP/PS1 mice (n = 6). Control male APP/PS1 mice received control AAV8 (n = 6). Spatial memory and locomotion were assessed 12 weeks after LRP-1 silencing using Y-maze and open-field test, respectively, and brain and liver Aβ were measured. Results Alcohol feeding reduced plaque-associated microglia in APP/PS1 mice brains and increased aggregated Aβ (p \u3c 0.05) by ELISA and 6E10-positive Aβ load by immunostaining (p \u3c 0.05). Increased brain Aβ corresponded with a significant downregulation of hepatic LRP-1 (p \u3c 0.01) at the protein and transcript level, primarily in pericentral hepatocytes (zone 3) where alcohol-induced injury occurs. Hepato-specific LRP-1 silencing significantly increased brain Aβ and locomotion hyperactivity (p \u3c 0.05) in APP/PS1 mice. Conclusion Chronic heavy alcohol intake reduced hepatic LRP-1 expression and increased brain Aβ. The hepato-specific LRP-1 silencing similarly increased brain Aβ which was associated with behavioral deficits in APP/PS1 mice. Collectively, our results suggest that hepatic LRP-1 is a key regulator of brain amyloidosis in alcohol-dependent AD

    Accuracy in Measurement of Infant Formula Powder and Water With and Without a Crying Baby Present

    Infant formula provides a safe, nutritious alternative to breastfeeding but caregivers may use unsanitary methods or make substantial errors with formula dilution and jeopardize infant health.1 Underdiluting formula can result in health problems, such as hypernatremic dehydration, gastroenteritis, other digestive problems, or long-term excess weight gain.2 Overdiluting infant formula, sometimes used to reduce expense by low-income caregivers,2 can also lead to serious health problems for babies, including diarrhea, water intoxication, nutrient deficiencies, malnutrition, and even death.2,3 Previous studies have assessed common measurement inaccuracy of infant formula preparations in relation to bottle characteristics, package instructions, caregiver experience, and target amount, indicating a tendency toward underdilution of formula.2,4 The present study addressed accuracy in measurement of powder and water when preparing infant formula in the presence or absence of a simulated crying baby to test the hypothesis that the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) would be higher with a crying baby present

    In the modern gamespace, modding has become an excellent opportunity for video game enthusiasts to express their creativity and love for a game; but what happens when that passion is stifled by a major company? My poster presentation will examine the ethics behind modding and ROM hacking, from both the perspectives of major video game corporations as well as their fanbase at large. We will analyze this issue using the case study of Pokémon Prism, a Pokémon Crystal ROM hack, which was canceled days prior to its release following a cease and desist by Nintendo. More specifically, we will investigate the potential value mods hold in improving overall game quality, as well as the opportunities lost by preventing these passion projects
