The Bosnia & Herzegovina dental students GHPSS includes data 
on prevalence of cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco 
products, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, exposure 
to second-hand smoke, desire for smoking cessation, and 
training received during dental school regarding patient 
counseling on smoking cessation techniques.  This information 
could be very useful in monitoring and developing Bosnia & 
Herzegovina’s comprehensive tobacco control program. 
   
 
The Bosnia & Herzegovina dental students GHPSS was a census 
of 3
rd
 year dental students attending the 3 dental schools in Bosnia 
& Herzegovina conducted in 2006.  The school response rate was 
100% and the student response rate was 94.4%.  A total of 170 
students participated in the Bosnia & Herzegovina dental students 
GHPSS. 
Prevalence 
 
84.1% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 87.6%, Females = 82.4%) 
36.1% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 34.1%, Females = 37.1%) 
6.3% ever used any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 10.5%, 
Females = 4.5%) 
2.5% currently use any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 2.1%, 
Females = 2.7%) 
51.3% of ever smokers smoked on school premises/property during the past year. 
26.0% of ever smokers smoked in school buildings during the past year. 
 
Factors Influencing Tobacco Use  
 
58.7% were exposed to second-hand smoke at home, during the past week. 
93.5% were exposed to second-hand smoke in public places during the past week. 
52.7% reported that their school had a ban on smoking in school buildings and 
clinics. 
43.0% reported that their school enforced the ban on smoking in school buildings 
and clinics. 
64.7% thought smoking should be banned in all enclosed public places. 
91.1% thought tobacco sales to adolescents should be banned. 
67.1% thought there should be a complete ban on advertising tobacco products. 
53.7% of current smokers wanted to stop smoking. 
52.1% of current smokers ever received help/advice to stop smoking cigarettes. 
57.1% were taught about the dangers of smoking during dental school training.

   The Gaza Strip - UNRWA GSPS includes data on prevalence 
of cigarette and other tobacco use as well as information on 
attitudes on school policy toward tobacco use, access to 
teaching materials and training, and attitudes toward tobacco 
use.  These factors are components Gaza Strip - UNRWA could 
include in a comprehensive tobacco control program. 
 The Gaza Strip - UNRWA GSPS was a school-based survey 
of school personnel from the schools that participated in the 
2008 Gaza Strip - UNRWA GYTS.  The GYTS was conducted 
in schools 
having students in grades 7, 8, and 9.  For the GYTS, a two-stage 
cluster sample design was used to produce representative data for 
all of Gaza Strip - UNRWA.  At the first stage, schools were 
selected with probability proportional to enrollment size.  At the 
second stage, classes were randomly selected and all students in 
selected classes were eligible to participate.  The school response 
rate was 100.0%.  For the GSPS, 100.0% of the school personnel 
completed the survey, for a total of 700 teachers & 
administrators. 
 
Prevalence of Tobacco Use among School Personnel 
 
31.2% ever smoked cigarettes (Admin = 60.1%, Teachers = 29.9%)

The Zambia Pharmacy students GHPSS includes data on 
prevalence of cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco 
products, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, 
exposure to second-hand smoke, desire for smoking 
cessation, and training received during Pharmacy school 
regarding patient counseling on smoking cessation 
techniques.  This information could be very useful in 
monitoring and developing Zambia’s comprehensive 
tobacco control program. 
The Zambia Pharmacy students GHPSS was a census of 3rd 
year Pharmacy students attending the 1 Pharmacy school in 
Zambia that was conducted in 2009.  A total of 73 3rd year 
students participated in the Zambia Pharmacy students 
GHPSS. The overall response rate of all Pharmacy students 
surveyed was 91.3%. 
Prevalence
50.7% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 68.4%, Females = 29.4%†) 
4.2% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 8.1%, Females = 0.0%†) 
17.8% ever used any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 21.1%, 
Females = 14.7%†) 
2.7% currently use any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 0.0%,

   The Morocco GSPS includes data on prevalence of cigarette

 The Morocco GSPS was a school-based survey of school

The Argentina nursing students GHPSS includes data on

counseling on smoking cessation techniques.  This information 
could be very useful in monitoring and developing Argentina’s

The Argentina nursing students GHPSS was a census of 3rd year 
nursing students attending the 8 nursing schools in Argentina 
conducted in 2007.  The school response rate was 100% and the 
student response rate was 93.2%.  A total of 269 students 
participated in the Argentina nursing students GHPSS.

85.4% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 88.5%, Females = 84.5%) 
36.4% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 38.4%, Females = 36.0%)

The Uruguay dental students GHPSS includes data on 
prevalence of cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco 
products, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, 
exposure to second-hand smoke, desire for smoking 
cessation, and training received during dental school 
regarding patient counseling on smoking cessation 
techniques.  This information could be very useful in 
monitoring and developing Uruguay’s comprehensive 
tobacco control program.   
The Uruguay dental students GHPSS was a census of 3
rd
 
year dental students attending the 2 dental schools in 
Uruguay conducted in 2008.  The school response rate was 
100% and the student response rate was 94.3%.  A total of 
95 students participated in the Uruguay dental students 
GHPSS. 
 
Prevalence 
 
83.1% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 84.0%, Females = 82.8%) 
38.9% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 32.0%, Females = 41.4%) 
56.4% ever used any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 68.0%, 
Females = 52.2%) 
7.4% currently use any form of tobacco other than cigarettes (Males = 12.0%, 
Females = 5.7%) 
38.2% of ever smokers smoked on school premises/property during the past year. 
5.7% of ever smokers smoked in school buildings during the past year. 
 
Factors Influencing Tobacco Use  
 
65.2% were exposed to second-hand smoke at home, during the past week. 
56.8% were exposed to second-hand smoke in public places during the past 
week. 
91.6% reported that their school had a ban on smoking in school buildings and 
clinics. 
96.5% reported that their school enforced the ban on smoking in school buildings 
and clinics. 
92.6% thought smoking should be banned in all enclosed public places. 
91.6% thought tobacco sales to adolescents should be banned. 
54.2% thought there should be a complete ban on advertising tobacco products. 
69.0% of current smokers wanted to stop smoking. 
28.6% of current smokers ever received help/advice to stop smoking cigarettes. 
86.2% were taught about the dangers of smoking during dental school training. 
 
Role Model and Cessation Training 
 
68.4% thought health professionals serve as role models for their patients. 
91.6% thought health professionals have a role in giving advice about 
smoking cessation to patients. 
11.5% received formal training in smoking cessation approaches during 
dental school. 
73.7% thought health professionals should get specific training on 
cessation techniques.

The Venezuela Medical students GHPSS includes data on
prevalence of cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco 
products, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, 
exposure to second-hand smoke, desire for smoking 
cessation, and training received during Medical school 
regarding patient counseling on smoking cessation 
techniques.  This information could be very useful in 
monitoring and developing Venezuela’s comprehensive 
tobacco control program.   
The Venezuela Medical students GHPSS was a one-stage 
cluster sample of 3rd year Medical students attending 3 
Medical schools in Venezuela conducted in 2011.  A total 
of 1,965 3rd year students participated in the Venezuela 
Medical students GHPSS.  The overall response rate of all 
Medical students surveyed was 64.0%. 
Prevalence 
44.2% ever smoked cigarettes (Males = 56.6%, Females = 39.2%) 
22.2% ever used other tobacco products (Males = 33.6%, Females = 17.5%) 
12.2% currently smoke cigarettes (Males = 19.8%, Females = 8.9%) 
5.6% currently use other tobacco products (Males = 10.0%, Females = 3.8%) 
50.3% ever used any tobacco products (Males= 61.4%, Female= 45.7%) 
15.1% currently use any tobacco products (Males= 24.6%, Female= 11.0%) 
10.2% ever used chewing chimó (Males= 17.9%, Female= 7.0%) 
2.3% currently use chewing chimó (Males= 4.7%, Female= 1.2%) 
22.5% of ever smokers smoked on school premises/property during the past year 
21.9% of ever smokers smoked in school buildings during the past year
