Determinants in adopting cashless payments in Europe: a multilevel analysis
The use of electronic currency for transactions, denoting a cashless paradigm,
has become increasingly common. However, this financial innovation is not prevalent
in all countries. This study aims to explain the discrepancies across countries,
including individual and country factors. It may be superficially posited that this lag
in development stems from individual or microlevel usage challenges. However,
the application of the Technology Acceptance Model highlights the presence of overarching
characteristics conducive to extensive adoption. Thus, an additional stratum,
the multilevel perspective, needs to be examined. This analytical framework incorporates
not only individual attributes but also the sociotechnical framework or mesolevel
factors in which they operate. A multilevel econometric model is used. The
results of these analyses show that the impact on the adoption of cashless payments
extends beyond individual factors (attitude to technology use, perceived usefulness,
and perceived ease of use). Our primary contribution, conceptually and empirically,
is to broaden the analysis vision. A comprehensive multilevel analysis revealed
that broader contextual elements, such as infrastructure and national skills, exert a significant
influence on the adoption of cashless transactions. Consequently, the widespread
acceptance of cashless payment methods is not only contingent on individual
choices but is also a collective phenomenon in which the surrounding environment
plays a crucial role as a catalyst for the end users in the cashless economy.

Silicon Valley Bank's collapse: interest rate risk and liquidity risk mismanagement
The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in March 2023 marked one of the most significant banking failures in recent history, triggering the Panic of 2023 and raising concerns about risk management practices in the financial sector. This study analyzes the key factors behind SVB’s downfall, focusing on its exposure to interest rate risk and liquidity risk. The bank’s heavy investment in long-term securities made it highly vulnerable to rising interest rates, leading to substantial unrealized losses. Simultaneously, its dependence on large, uninsured deposits from the tech sector exacerbated liquidity pressures when withdrawals surged. Through a detailed examination of SVB’s financial statements, with special focus on its balance sheet structure, this paper identifies the main sources of the aforementioned risks to later quantify them. The findings reveal that by late 2022, SVB was already on the brink of insolvency, with significant unrealized losses on long-term securities and a fragile funding structure heavily reliant on large, uninsured deposits. The poor management of interest rate risk and liquidity risk, coupled with inadequate regulatory supervision, accelerated the bank’s downfall
Intimate partner violence and eating disorders: a systematic review
Eating disorders are one of the consequences suffered by individuals who are immersed in intimate partner violence. Knowing that intimate partner violence is a social problem that affects men and women all over the world, it is important to examine and detect which factors affect their physical and emotional health. The aim of the present work was to systematically review the association between IPV and ED. In February 2024, a systematic search of Web of Science, Scopus and PsycINFO databases was performed. A total of 689 papers were obtained, of which 155 were excluded as duplicates, resulting in 535 articles. After reviewing the title, abstract and keywords, 485 articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria were eliminated. Subsequently, the remaining 50 papers were read and discrepancies were resolved, achieving 87.3% agreement among judges. Finally, 40 papers met the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review. The results clearly show the relationship between IPV and various EDs. Being a victim of IPV, in its different forms (physical, psychological and sexual), has been related to disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. In general, some studies found differences between men and women in the association of the presence of sexual violence and ED symptoms. In conclusion, EDs may be a form of control that individuals exert over their bodies in response to the control exercised by their abusive partners. Addressing the interpersonal sphere by focusing on the management of violent dynamics within the couple is the key to change in individual coping. This research was supported by a predoctoral grant from the Basque Government to JM (PRE_2021_1_0065), by a Basque Government Research Groups grant (‘Culture, Cognition, and Emotion’ Group; IT1598-22), and by two Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation grants (PID2020-115738GB-I00 and PID2020-116658GB-I00), funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/.

Polypeptide-based multilayer capsules with anti-inflammatory properties: exploring different strategies to incorporate hydrophobic drugs
More than 90% of drug candidates used in the drug development pipeline and about 40% of drugs on the market are poorly soluble in water based on the definition of the biopharmaceutical classification system. The advent of drug delivery approaches has represented a striking tool to overcome the challenges associated with the use of hydrophobic drugs, such as their low bioavailability and off-target effects. Drug carrier formulations composed of biodegradable and biocompatible polymers, such as polypeptides, have been explored as platforms to host poorly water-soluble drugs to prolong drug circulation, enhance their safety, reduce their immunogenicity, and promote their controlled release. In this work, we evaluated three strategies—co-precipitation, post-encapsulation, and conjugation—to incorporate a hydrophobic model drug, i.e., curcumin (CUR), into biodegradable multilayer capsules fabricated via a layer-by-layer (LbL) approach. Poly(L-lysine) (PLys) and poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGlu) were adopted as building blocks and alternately assembled onto calcium carbonate (CaCO3) microparticles to build a polypeptide-multilayer membrane, which acted as a barrier to control the release of the drug. The application of our three formulations in in vitro inflammatory models of THP-1 derived human macrophages and murine microglia showed a reduction of the inflammation with the suppression of three pivotal pro-inflammatory cytokines (i.e., interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α). Moreover, the intracellular release of CUR detected upon uptake studies on activated microglia suggested that our systems could represent a potential therapeutic approach to reduce acute neuroinflammation and modulate microglia phenotype. The authors acknowledge the financial support from the Basque Government (projects 2023333010, 2023333023, PIBA2023-1-0043, IT-1766-22, IKUR Strategy), the University of the Basque Country (projects COLLAB22/05 and GIU21/033), the IKERBASQUE-Basque Foundation for Science, the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Government of Spain (grant PID2022-142739OB-I00 funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by FEDER, UE; 'María de Maeztu' Programme for Center of Excellence in R&D, grant CEX2023-001303-M funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033; PID2022-142128NB-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/and by the “European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR”; RYC2018-025923-I from RyC program – MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and FSE “invierte en tu futuro”). Hybrid plasmonic bioresins and dECM-based materials for volumetric bioprinting of vascular-inspired architectures
Synergizing nanomaterials technology with advanced 3D printing techniques creates new opportunities for developing smart, stimuli-responsive materials suitable for tissue engineering scaffolds. By incorporating stimuli-responsive nanoparticles into extracellular matrix (ECM)-mimetics, these composites gain functional elements capable of replicating dynamic biological processes in vitro. Herein, we propose combining hybrid multifunctional inorganic-organic materials with the emerging Volumetric Bioprinting (VBP) technique. We present two hybrid materials, a light stimuli-responsive polymeric resin and a biocompatible porcine-derived dECM bioresin expanding the library of materials for VBP. Plasmonic nanoparticles are combined with a thermoresponsive polymeric matrix formulating the stimuli-responsive resin, while a decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM)-based bioresin with embedded smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is employed for including the biological component to the system. As a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the versatility of the hybrid materials, we investigated the generation of highly complex structures, including multi-walled channels, using sequential VBP. Overall, this study broadens the range of materials compatible with VBP, thereby enabling the use of smart multi-component materials in the fabrication of dynamic, stimuli-responsive 3D in vitro modelsFinancial support is acknowledged through grants #PID2022-143248OB-I00 and #CNS2022-135941 from the MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and “ERDF A way of making Europe” and by “European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR” UAL thanks the Basque Government for the predoctoral and postdoctoral grants (PRE_2023_2_0014 and PRE_2024_2_0182) and the EGONLABUR short stay grant (EP_2023_1_0058). Lehen Hezkuntzako ikasleen smartphoneen kudeaketa
[EUS] Lehen Hezkuntzako ikasleek gero eta goizago jasotzen dute lehen telefono mugikorra, eta horrek gaitasun digitalaren garapenean erronka berriak planteatu ditu. Ikerketa honen helburua hezkuntza-etapa horretan familiek smartphoneen erabilera nola kudeatzen duten aztertzea da. Horretarako, 77 gurasok erantzun zuten galdetegi kuantitatibo bat erabili zen. Emaitzek ikasleen erdiak lehen smartphonea 11 eta 12 urte bitartean jaso zuela eta familiek seme-alabei telefono mugikorra emateko arrazoi nagusiak segurtasuna eta komunikazioa bermatzea izan zirela erakusten dute. Gainera, monitorizazio eta babes praktikek puntuazio altuenak lortu zituzten, eta gatazkari lotutako jokabideek, aldiz, baxuenak. Halaber, guraso-jokabideetan ezberdintasun esanguratsuak aurkitu ziren generoaren eta guraso-kontroleko aplikazioen erabileraren arabera. [EN] Primary school students are receiving their first mobile phones at an increasingly early age, which has raised new challenges in the development of digital competence. The aim of this study is to analyse how families manage the use of smartphones during this educational stage. To this end, a quantitative questionnaire was used, which was answered by 77 parents. The results show that half of the students received their first smartphone between the ages of 11 and 12, and that the main reasons why families gave their children a mobile phone were to ensure safety and communication. In addition, monitoring and protection practices scored the highest, while behaviours associated with conflict scored the lowest. Significant differences were also found in parenting behaviours according to gender and the use of parental control applications. The study concluded that there was less conflict in families who actively mediated, and that collaboration between schools and families is vital to ensure the well-being and responsible digital use of pupils
Urinary incontinence during pregnancy and in the postpartum period
This paper presents eighteen Latin inscriptions scratched postcocturam on Roman tableware (Italian, Gaulish and Hispanic Terra-Sigillata, thin-walled and slipware pottery). They were found during an archaeological excavation carried out in 1985 at the site of the Diputación Provincial de Huesca. Although some representative materials from these excavations have already been studied, a large part of them have remained unpublished, among which are the pieces presented here. After a brief introduction to the context of the excavation site, a detailed description of the new scratched inscriptions is given: eight epigraphic graffiti, preserving three or more letters; six with isolated letters, including one from the Greek alphabet; and four anepigraphic marks. An appendix is included at the end with a revision and results of pottery fabric analysis of a graffito on slipware, known as a "Sertorian graffito" found during the same excavations as the others presented, for which a new possible dating is proposed. The study of these materials represents a new contribution to the knowledge of everyday writing and literacy in Roman Osca.; En este trabajo se estudia un conjunto de 18 grafitos realizados post cocturam sobre cerámicas de mesa romana (TSI, TSG, TSH, paredes finas y cerámica engobada) de época altoimperial.
The emergence of cash distributions in the civic euergetism of the Roman imperial east
Individualised distributions of money by civic benefactors, in the form of coinage, were a common feature of public life in Greece and Asia Minor under Roman imperial rule, from the 1st to 3rd centuries CE. However, the chronological specificity of this practice, as opposed to the distribution of other types of commodities (e.g. grain, oil), has not often been noticed. This paper first suggests that public euergetic distributions of coinage only seriously emerged as a social phenomenon in the early 1st century CE, before relating their emergence from this point to several factors inherent to the transformation of the Roman state at this time: the influence on the local elite of imperial ideology, particularly in cash handouts carried out at Rome, and developments in the monetary and fiscal history of the region.
