Considerations for a Sustainable Development in Paraguay

Background: In the last several decades, Paraguay has experienced a remarkable degree of economic and political stability that has enabled the country to achieve important levels of growth and development in several fields. This indeed is not negligible in the context of a traditionally unstable Latin American region, but also because Paraguay itself has rarely benefitted from such a long period of soundness across its more than 200 years of independent—yet convulsive—history. Objective: As expected, this situation provides a more than valuable opportunity for the country to ensure that such economic growth and concomitant development are not temporary but can be sustainable in time, hence continuously improving the welfare of the Paraguayan population without jeopardizing its environment and intrinsic (natural) resources. Method: Any opportunity then brings about several aspects and challenges that policymakers will have to consider and eventually address in order to effectively materialize such a chance for real and long-lasting development. Results: This  study intends to share relevant thoughts and considerations about the current state of the Paraguayan development process, while attempting to identify some crucial policy actions that can maximize the probabilities of successful development for this country or, to put it differently, to reduce the risk of falling into a middle-income trap that perpetuates the characteristically Latin American vicious circle of poverty and inequality

Heritage Tourism in Cancun: Fostering Tourist Connection and Destination Resilience through Cultural Experiences

Background: This research explores destination resilience in Cancún, México, which is known for its relaxed Caribbean atmosphere and sandy beaches worldwide and uses heritage experiences such as tours to archaeological sites and culinary tastings to weave a destination narrative. Objectives & Method: Utilizing heritage tourism theory to provide a lens for understanding how global tourism leaders strengthen their destination’s resilience, the study was conducted using observational research to investigate cultural tourist experiences at Museo Maya de Cancún and Coba and in Cancún’s hotel zone. Results/Conclusion: This poster examines the role heritage tourism plays in helping to create connection between the region’s Mayan culture with its tourists, leading to a stronger destination image for Cancún’s resort community

Adaptive Leadership Part One: Ethical Leadership and Historical Roots

Background: Adaptable leadership can be indispensable in times of change, crisis, and growth, however, much like its originating theory of ethical leadership, it can be misused while in practice and it can fail to live up to its potential. Understanding and applying the virtue of altruism helps to protect against the pitfalls of the practice that Heifetz identified. The authors argue that further connecting the practice to adjacent leadership theories while also connecting theory and practice, provide an ethical anchor while allowing the practice to operate inside of modern organizations. Objectives: Through this four-part series, the authors aim to enrich the understanding of adaptive leadership with this article focusing on the impact ethical leadership has had on the development of the practice. Approach: The authors will move readers through the ethical foundations and history of the practice (past), through modern uses including crisis leadership and shifting hierarchical structures (present), into further development and transformative leadership opportunities (future), ending in a case study to help develop leaders and their understanding of the theory (leadership as practice)

The awkwardness of being a pacifist

Trying to be a faithful pacifist puts me in awkward situations and conversations. I know that feeling awkward is not among the most important dimensions that surround issues of violence, war, and peace. Nonetheless, it’s difficult to articulate pacifist ideals in certain contexts such as discussions that seek to determine what might be done in volatile situations in which it appears that deployment of military measures might make sense. Negatively described, pacifism is a belief that violence should not be used; positively, it is the belief that peace should be pursued using peaceful methods. Many different versions of this view exist, and the one to which I cling is part of my Christian faith. I believe that in the person, work, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus we find the example of and the direction for pacifism, as well as the strength to live in peaceful ways, especially as part of the body of Christ, the church

What we need is here: On finding our way back home

The scriptures tell us that God in Jesus has made his home with us, come to seek and save the homeless (John 1:14). God comes as one scattering seeds, which grow to be large trees giving shelter, shade, and food (Mark 4:26). Jesus invites those who are anxious and weary to come and find rest (Matt. 11:28–30). Against our self-serious attempts to make something of ourselves and the world, Jesus announces, “It is finished” (John 19:30). In Jesus, God’s peace has arrived. It is here. Jesus calls ushome, into the joy of creation, for look: “the home of God is among mortals” (Rev. 21:3). What we need is here

Remembering the martyrs of Bloemkamp: A ghost story

On August 29, 2004, a Dutch Roman Catholic priest named Jan Romkes van der Wal led a workshop to draw attention to a group of people he identified as “the martyrs of Bloemkamp.” The story of Bloemkamp abbey doesn’t figure prominently in the memories of most contemporary Mennonites. But there is no question that it played a critical role in the development of the Mennonite tradition as we have come to understand it

Five hundred years of Anabaptism and colonization

I have the great privilege of sitting on the “Anabaptism at Five Hundred” advisory group put in place by MennoMedia about two years ago. It has been wonderful to join with diverse Anabaptists in creating resources to commemorate our shared identity. While I am a Mennonite woman, I am also Indigenous. As a Tewa (Pueblo1) woman, it is impossible for me to engage in this celebratory look into our Anabaptist history without also viewing the history of Anabaptism through the lens of my people

    The Dagger of Omahundro

A sacred archaeologist faces a difficult choice when a sacred dagger that grants the ability to kill with impunity is allegedly found. If the dagger is real, he is obligated by his faith to respect its use to kill. If it is not real, then he is also obligated by his faith to bring to justice anyone who uses it to murder.&nbsp

Global Leadership Adaptability Through Servant Leadership and Cultural Humility: A Conceptual Framework

Background: Adaptability is a requisite and indispensable trait for future global leaders. Remaining adaptable through times of change is a mechanism through which leaders can be best prepared to navigate evolving environments and ever-changing circumstances. Objectives: The authors aim to explore the relationships between global leadership mindset and adaptability by applying servant leadership and cultural humility perspectives. Approach: Leadership theories and approaches to leadership and adaptability will be discussed relative to leadership traits, skills, and knowledge and their potential relation to the degree of leadership adaptability. A global leader with cultural humility develops cultural awareness and tends to interact and adapt effectively with people of different cultures. By combining servant leadership and cultural humility, mindsets will enhance the development of global leadership adaptability. Being adaptable as a leader allows for creativity and innovation while navigating cultural disparities. Conclusion: Global leaders must be resilient, relevant, and vigilant. They must be prepared to address crises while simultaneously fostering stability and progress for the survival of humanity. Their transformative actions should inspire effective change. The proposed conceptual framework integrates servant leadership and cultural humility perspectives and fosters a global leadership mindset. This mindset enhances leadership adaptability to address contemporary challenges.
