How Communities Respond to Industrial Pollution
Get PDFIndustrial pollution is a growing environmental issue in the United States, having health, economic, and social consequences on the surrounding communities. This study explores how communities respond to industrial pollution by examining two case studies in New York: the Navy/Grumman Plume of Bethpage and the IBM Plume of Endicott. Document analysis provided information to create complete timelines of the pollution and remediation in each community. Interviews were also conducted to provide personal insight from residents, employees of polluting industries, or those involved with remediation efforts. Ultimately, the research suggests that industrial actors should take a proactive stance in addressing contamination. It’s also recommended that government officials should use their positions to hold responsible parties accountable, write and pass legislation that will prevent contamination from happening in the future, and provide a platform for stakeholders to participate. Lastly, it was observed that community stakeholders were most effective when they organized into groups

Investigating the role of tryptophan in the native photo-crosslinking of a cys-containing transmembrane helix to a membrane lipid double bond
Get PDFOur research group has previously discovered that a Cys residue within a transmembrane (TM) helix can directly photo-crosslink to a membrane lipid via an oxythiolation addition reaction to the double bond within the lipid, with a reaction yield of 10-20%. The pH-low Insertion Peptide (pHLIP) serves as our model TM helix, while the POPC lipid bilayer is our model membrane. We had long believed that the Trp residues within the sequence of pHLIP served as the key chromophore for this reaction, and thus they were essential for the formation of the TM helix-lipid adduct. To test this hypothesis, I synthesized a negative control pHLIP variant (i.e., W9Y-W15Y-L16C-pHLIP) in which each of the Trp residues was replaced by a Tyr residue. Interestingly, my recent experiments have challenged the need for Trp in this reaction. W9Y-W15Y-L16C-pHLIP has been reproducibly shown to photo-crosslink to POPC in higher-than-expected yields of 2-9%, suggesting the possibility of there being an alternative reaction pathway. Each cross-linking reaction was monitored with HPLC. The HPLC-purified peptide-lipid adduct was characterized and quantified using UV-visible spectroscopy and LC-MS

Analysis of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) reveals a preference for authentic content and the effectiveness of visual posts in driving audience interaction. The Effect of Diet Quality on Mood
Get PDFDiet can have a major impact on mood based on nutrient quality. However, research on the effect of individual food groups on mood is limited. An anonymous online survey was administered through Text Message, Instagram, GroupMe, Reddit and Discord. The survey included basic demographic questions and general questions on respondent’s diets, including how frequently certain food groups were consumed per week, and their mood over the previous month. Pearsons’s Correlation Analysis was utilized using SPSS version 28.0. A correlation was found between quality of food groups and overall mood.
