Panellus stipticus
Saprobic; growing on dead and rotting hardwoods often in shelving clusters. This species grows in the spring through fall and sometimes in warm winters or warm winter spells. It’s distribution ranges from North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia although is more commonly found in the east. This mushroom’s cap is 0.5-3 cm wide, convex and has an enrolled margin with a semicircular to kidney shape. It is dry, smooth to velvety and often becomes cracked with age. It ranges in color from off-white to brown. Gills end at the stem, are crowded, often forked or short, containing cross-veins, and are a light golden brown. It’s stem is approximately 3 mm long and 3 mm wide, though often indistinguishable from its cap. It is off-centered and attached to rotting hardwood. Similar to the cap, the stem is velvety and ranges from off-white to brown. This species has a bitter taste, a white spore print, and tough white to pale brown flesh. Distinctive to this species is its bioluminescent gills. It’s gills emit a dull yellow glow that can often be seen in the dark. Commonly known as the bitter oyster or the luminescent panellus, this species has several unique features. The origin of bioluminescence in the gilled mushrooms is understudied. One researcher suggested that the lineages of all gilled mushrooms share a common luminescent ancestor (Oliveira et al. 2012). It was found that luminosity in this species is inherited by a pair of alleles with luminosity being dominant over non-luminosity (Macrae 1942). More research is required to understand the phylogenetic lineage of luminescent fungi, their dominant characteristics, and their relationship with gilled fungi as a whole. This species has also been used in traditional Chinese medicine as a blood thickener (Hobbs 2003) and has shown the potential to be used in bioremediation (Sato et al. 2002) and assist in the conversion and breakdown of toxic industrial waste. Trametes versicolor
Common saprotrophic fungus found on decaying tree trunks, branches, and logs. It is a well known white-rog fungus that uses laccase to oxidize lignins in wood (Jönsson et. al. 1989). We collected multiple samples that were found on decaying tree trunks and branches. T. versicolor has a wide distribution and can be found across North America as well as parts of Asia and Europe. Found in shelf-like clusters that can range from 2-10 cm in length. Has grayish-brown layers of color with white ends although specimens in other regions may have This fungus is thin and has a pliable texture when freshly picked but turns stiff when left to dry. Has a non-distinctive taste. Produces white spores. Scientists are studying the polysaccharide, Peptide Krestin, found in T. versicolor, as it is believed to play a positive role in concurrent adjuvant treatment in breast cancer patients (Standish et al. 2008). Thin metal rods, 3D printed sculpture, image 2
Below are pictures of a 3D printed sculpture of a design I created many years ago based on the Star of David, originally made by soldering thin metal rods together. Four such stars are placed on the faces of a tetrahedron, so that each star touches an adjacent star at three points. Three of these pictures show a 3D printed version made from strong flexible plastic where each line segment of each star is 3 long. Digging the Repast: A Port Town Diet through the Lens of the Natural Landscape
This article presents analysis of faunal remains from the Burch House, an 18th-century house in Port Tobacco, Maryland. The location of Port Tobacco gave the town accessibility to water and land transportation, allowing the town to become an important commercial center from the late 17th century to the 18th century. In the 18th century, the town served as the county seat in Charles County, Maryland. The faunal material discussed in this paper was recovered during the 2010 excavation of the Burch House, one of three surviving 18th century buildings. The faunal assemblage from the Burch House provides a snapshot of household diet in a changing port town. The consistency of the assemblage from the early 18th century to early 20th century is indicative of the diet preferences not being impacted by the overall growth and decline of the town
Common reasons for divorce
Marriage, a commitment between two individuals who share feelings and believe their connection to be long-term--- is common to terminate in the form of divorce. Justifications for such an act have been previously studied and found to be due to a plethora of reasons. In this essay, the five common reasons of unappreciation, jealousy, sexual rejection, infidelity, and abuse were highlighted. Additionally, experiences and memories of one can majorly affect behavior and point of view towards their partner. Through the analysis of this research, I have concluded that the success of marriage all boils down to the act of reciprocating communication and satisfaction. In the case that one of these two variables is absent, the marriage begins to lose value and causes partners to question their union
Are Terrorist Networks Just Glorified Criminal Cells?
The notions of organized crime and terrorism have an old and rich history around the globe. Researchers and practitioners have been studying events and phenomena related to these notions for a long time. There are pointers in the literature in which it is misleading to see the unfair comparison between terrorist and criminal networks with the argument that all actors involved in these networks are simply evil individuals. In this paper, we conduct a systematic study of the operational structure of such networks from a network science perspective. We highlight some of the major differences between them and support our hypothesis with analytical evidence. We hope our work will impact current and future endeavors in counter terrorism, especially within the cyber realm, inside the United States of America and across our allied nations
