    Autonomous shock sensing using bi-stable triboelectric generators and MEMS electrostatic levitation actuators

    This work presents an automatic threshold shock-sensing trigger system that consists of a bi-stable triboelectric transducer and a levitation-based electrostatic mechanism. The bi-stable mechanism is sensitive to mechanical shocks and releases impact energy when the shock is strong enough. A triboelectric generator produces voltage when it receives a mechanical shock. The voltage is proportional to the mechanical shock. When the voltage exceed a certain level, the initially pulled-in Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switch is opened and can disconnect the current in a safety electronic system. The MEMS switch combines two mechanisms of gap-closing (parallel-plate electrodes) with electrostatic levitation (side electrodes) to provide bi-directional motions. The switch is initially closed from a small bias voltage on the gap-closing electrodes. The voltage from the bi-stable generator is connected to the side electrodes. When the shock goes beyond a threshold, the upward force caused by the side electrodes on the switch becomes strong enough to peel off the switch from the closed position. The threshold shock the system can detect is tunable using two control parameters. These two tuning parameters are the axial force on the bi- stable system (clamped-clamped beam) and the bias voltage on the MEMS switch (gap-closing electrodes). The actuation in macro-scale is thus directly connected to a sensor-switch mechanism in micro-scale. This chain makes an autonomous actuation and sensing stand-alone system that has potential application on air bag deployment devices and powerline protection systems.     Shell Button-Making on the Delmarva Peninsula, ca. 1930s-1990s

    Shell button-making in the United States began in northeastern industrial cities like New York in the late 19th century, using ocean shell imported from Australia and the south Pacific. A German immigrant brought the industry from Austria to the American Midwest after recognizing the potential of the freshwater mussel beds of the Mississippi River as a resource for shell button-making. The industry flourished for several years but suffered from labor strikes and depletion of the local mussel population. In the early 1930s entrepreneurs established shell button factories in rural portions of eastern Maryland and Delaware (Delmarva), again using imported ocean shell when the local species proved unsuitable for shell button-making. Shells of bivalves and gastropods from around the world became part of the Delmarva economy and later the ecosystem, as shell dust and other waste products were used to pave roads and increase the fertility of agricultural soil. Surviving shop sites and machinery, recovered shell waste, oral testimony, and census, legislative, land title, and other data document the rise and fall of Delmarva’s shell button-making industry between the early 1930s and 1990s

    Comparative analysis of COVID-19 protective public health policy responses in New York and Ohio

    The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted American society in almost every regard. The clash of politics and science in the United States (US) can be seen as the primary factor that was distorting the US pandemic response. American politics was criticized for being too involved in the pandemic response and many questioned if party leadership/ideology influenced decision-making of political officials. Republican and democratic states were deemed to have different responses which would assume that politics potentially played too much of a role in a health crisis. I compare New York and Ohio in the earliest pandemic phase of March-April 2020 and then extend this comparison through July 2020, because of their governors’ opposite party affiliation and similarity in the time frame in which the pandemic impacted the states the worst

These were all made from the core wood drilled out of wood blocks that I carved into torus knots. The four smaller pieces are about 2 tall, and the four larger ones are about 3 tall.     Medellín and the Aburrá Valley are internationally recognized for their capacity to design bold projects regarding transportation and sustainability. However, the city\u27s mobility dynamics show a different reality: the number of vehicles has grown steadily over the last 20 years. The metropolitan inhabitants spend 44% more time mobilizing in the city than 12 years ago and air quality has become the main challenge on the city\u27s environmental agenda. The purpose of this article is to understand, from the analysis of public policies, the reasons why no progress has been made in the implementation of policies that effectively discourage the use of private vehicles in the Aburrá Valley. Through the analysis of the demand management instruments enforced between 1999 and 2019, it is concluded that mobility policies produce contradictory effects with each other: they systematically avoid the restriction and disincentives to the use of automobiles and motorcycles and focusing predominantly on the expansion of road infrastructure. At the same time, they undertake actions, to a lesser extent, to stimulate the use of other means of transportation
