Analyzing The Contribution of Western Acculturation to The Socio-Economic Disenfranchisement of Pakistani Expatriates in the United Arab Emirates

    Get PDF
The impact of acculturation on the West has primarily been explored through the favorable and adverse effects of immigration. However, the conversation surrounding the impact of western acculturation on the rest of the world is relatively undeveloped. Here, on the basis that acculturation is the adoption of cultural practices and can exist without the physical presence of a dominant culture, the impact of western acculturation will be associated with the socioeconomic disenfranchisement of an overseas population: Pakistani expatriates in the United Arab Emirates. More specifically, free education and western media are identified as mechanisms of western acculturation. Both media induced and free education induced acculturation constitute a level of agreeability that acclimates workers to the social structure of the capitalistic business model employed in the UAE. Media induced acculturation directly predisposes Pakistani expatriates in the UAE to the socioeconomic disenfranchisement that accompanies the power dynamic in the social structure of the capitalistic business model. Education models in the UAE institutionalize western acculturation, possibly leading to socioeconomic disenfranchisement and deep-rooted cultural change. Deep-rooted cultural change becomes imperative when considering the promotion of globalization in that although globalization may provide a broader cultural perspective, it can also eliminate cultures via acculturation-induced cultural dominance

Empty Apologies: Canada’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Crisis

    Get PDF
The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) crisis is a human rights crisis that demands swift and concrete action from the Canadian government. Indigenous women and girls in the United States and Canada are disproportionately affected by violence due to racist, white supremacist, colonialist values ingrained in society and the federal government. This paper looks into the findings of Canada’s 2016 National Inquiry into the MMIWG crisis and determines the progress that the Canadian government has made toward ending the crisis. The paper concludes that the Canadian government has used the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse for delayed action and their programs will take years, even decades to be implemented considering the pace of the National Inquiry. If the Inquiry’s Calls to Action are met with inadequate solutions implemented for optics, Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people will continue to be taken from their families and communities. The next few years will reveal whether the National Inquiry was a political ploy to temporarily appease the public, or a genuine effort to end this severe human rights crisis

The Effect of Exercise and Dietary Patterns on Mental Health Disorder before, during, and late COVID-19 on Males and Females

The Effect of Exercise and Dietary Patterns on Mental Health Disorder before, during, and late COVID-19 on Males and Females The emerging field of nutritional neuroscience has revealed the modulatory role of diet and sleep on mental health. Nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, and whole grains were described as supporting brain functions, and sleep deprivation has been associated with a disruption in brain functions. Exercise is another effective modulator of mental health. The outbreak of the global pandemic Covid-19 has produced a sudden disruption in people\u27s routines. Factors such as sickness, loss of lives and jobs, and remote working heavily impact mental health. During the Covid lockdown, the food chain supply and exercise routine were interrupted. Therefore, studying the effects of dietary and exercise patterns on the mental health of men and women pre-Covid, during Covid, and post-Covid may provide significant insight into the effect of these modulators on mental health. In this study, we performed an event-based difference-in-difference study based on exercise and dietary patterns, then computed the probability of being in moderate or severe mental health disorder states. Our results show that, in total, women\u27s mental health was more affected by Covid-19. Also, having a sedentary lifestyle will increase the risk of having moderate or severe mental health for both males and females. Moreover, factors like increasing the frequency of consuming breakfast, sleep duration, exercise type, and consuming seafood were inversely associated with mental health disorders, while the distance to the gym, consuming fast food, caffeine intake, and HGI food were directly related to mental health disorders in men and women during weekdays and weekends.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1013/thumbnail.jp

    Magnetically Geared Hydroelectric Turbine

    Get PDF
Over 900 million people lack access to electricity globally. While solar energy has become a more widespread and affordable electricity source, the cost of batteries and inverters has made solar electricity access intermittent and dependent on sunlight cycles. Small scale hydroelectric power has the potential to provide 24/7 electricity access for people who lack grid electricity. Many hydroelectric turbines rely on mechanical seals to transfer rotation across a seal. These seals are prone to wear over time and are vulnerable to silt buildup. Typical turbines also require a gearbox to increase the speed or torque of the rotation. Traditional mechanical gearboxes are expensive and require regular maintenance. Through the use of a magnetic gearbox, rotation can be transferred through an air or water gap without the need for physical contact. The ratio of magnetic poles on each rotor acts similar to how teeth act on traditional mechanical gears. By adjusting the ratio of magnetic poles, an increase of speed or torque can be achieved. This novel turbine design effectively produces power while eliminating the need for both a mechanical seal and a gearbox.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1019/thumbnail.jp

Fast-Food, Sugary Food, High Caffeine Intake and Dental-Related Anxieties

Existing literature has investigated the relationship between dental anxieties and oral health, yet the relationship between diet and oral health status has yet to be examined. The purpose of this research study was to determine the correlational relationships that exist between oral health, dental anxiety, and nutrition. Data was collected through an anonymous Google Forms survey which was distributed to patients at various dental offices in the Binghamton-Vestal, NY area as well among Binghamton University students. The distributed survey was composed of the validated Food-Mood Questionnaire with questions pertaining to demographics, dental health and dental health anxieties. A total of 506 responses were collected and analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient in SPSS version 25.0. Our results suggest that females are more likely to experience dental anxiety than men. An increase in the consumption of low-quality-energy dense foods, including pre-packaged food, fast food, and sugary foods, a pattern similar to the Western diet, as well as caffeine consumption of 4 times or more per week, were positively correlated (P \u3c 0.01) with increased nervousness and anxiety at the dental office. Frequent consumption of low-quality-energy dense foods was also positively correlated with increased feelings of general mental health distress. Our findings provide a proof of concept that dietary patterns are potentially associated with dental anxiety, and modulation of these patterns may diminish dental-related mental distress.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1036/thumbnail.jp

Evaluation of a Novel Reduced Enrichment Rat Model of Depression Using Elevated Plus Maze and Cortical Monoamine Analysis

    Get PDF
Depression is a serious mental illness that affects one in fifteen adults. However, 30% of patients with depression do not reach the treatment goal of full recovery, showing the need for more adequate treatments. The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to elevated levels of depression. This experiment investigated a novel animal model for depression caused by the removal from a high enrichment environment. Two anxiety-like behaviors, open and closed arm entries, were measured in the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) to gather behavioral differences. Removal of enrichment caused female rats to enter fewer open arms, which indicated that they were more anxious. Females entered more open and closed arms than males, which shows innate sex differences. Levels of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), and serotonin (5-HT) were measured in the motor cortex (MC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). Reduced females had higher levels of 5-HT and a trending increase in NE in the OFC compared to control females which suggests that these monoamines could underlie the behavioral differences seen in the EPM. The novel study utilized behavioral and neurochemical analysis to evaluate the validity of an animal model for depression.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1050/thumbnail.jp
