Capitalism and Natural Symbiosis
The goal of this research is to explore if the flaws of capitalism such as greed and selfishness are truly the natural default in the world. Perhaps if it is not, nature may represent an important role model for humanity. Capitalism is an economic system dependent on exploitation and domination. But a potential way out may be studying nature. After researching ecosystems and symbiotic relationships of plants, it is clear that trees within forests have a communal economy of resources in which plants unconditionally support each other. They mutually benefit by sharing nutrients such as important water and minerals and also releasing signals to each other to prepare themselves for weather conditions and invasive species. This system of mutual helpfulness has been demonstrated to improve the quality of life for these plants by improving health, increasing photosynthesis, and greater resistance to natural obstacles. This unfortunately does not exist in capitalism as the majority of laborers in this form of society only receive just enough for their reproduction while capitalists in corporations who are at the top of competition profit immensely. As a result structural inequality is reinforced. The upper class also has a very strong political influence and escapes any repercussions for their over consumption of large amounts of natural resources. But if the abuse of capitalism is so apparent, then why do people accept it? It seems as though the system itself has manipulated the desires of humans and perhaps the image of nature as competitive and brutal derives from capitalist ideology seeking to eliminate threats. Though humans cannot perfectly replicate the selfless nature of the trees, trying to envision a better society and economic system through the lens of natural studies may very well be the path to eliminating the flaws of capitalism.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1055/thumbnail.jp
Developing Middle School Students’ Identities as a STEM Person through an Archaeology Afterschool Program
Identity, or “an individual’s sense of self, is defined “a set of physical, psychological, and interpersonal characteristics” that are unique to each individual (APA Dictionary of Psychology). Defining one\u27s identity takes place “within and is influenced by multiple timescales” (Carlone, 2012), such as a period of years, months, or even weeks. The purpose of this study was to examine the possible ways in which middle school participation in an archaeological STEM afterschool program might shape and shift their identity as a STEM person. Data was collected from twenty-four students in grades sixth through eight who attended two rural middle schools located in different towns in upstate New York. Students were given a booklet where they were asked to identify themselves with one or more identities and write a reflection as to why they chose the identity(ies) based on their experiences with the activities that day. While most students identified themselves as “investigators” and “observers”, quotes from their student booklets also indicated their individual sense of “bravery” and “logitian.” These identities were most often documented in “high” STEM activities, such as the study of animal remains (scientific observation), mystery boxes (hypothesis testing), and excavation sites (pythagorean theorem). Together, these three (or four) aforementioned “identities”, along with the activities in which they were most prevalent, highlight possible instances in which a student’s participation in an archaeological STEM afterschool program shaped their developing identity as a STEM person.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1056/thumbnail.jp
Using Developmental Frameworks to Implement Focus Groups in School-Aged Children
This poster describes the use of virtual focus groups with school-aged children in the development of a pediatric wellbeing picture scale to screen for mental health and wellbeing. Children\u27s opinions, creative ideas, and insights allow acquisition of new data and knowledge, but unfortunately, are frequently overlooked. When using developmentally-based principles, focus groups have been shown to be a successful and reliable method for collecting data from this age group and a novel way to better understand the child’s interactions and experiences. Focus groups have a number of advantages, allowing for in-depth exploration of discussion by the participants. Students in Nursing 499 conducted developmentally-based focus groups with children grades 3-5 to develop the Pediatric Well Being Picture Scale. Basing focus groups on theoretical frameworks of Piaget, Erikson, and Kohlberg creates an environment conducive to open discussion and expression of children’s ideas. These focus groups give children the opportunity to connect to one another and feel more comfortable in talking about items about emotional wellbeing. This allowed the researcher to gain an understanding of the children’s perspective for the items on the wellbeing scale. Limitations noted due to the virtual environment included maintaining the child’s attention, adequacy of technology, and assuring that each child had the opportunity to equally participate. Mismatched Name: Exploring the Meaning When Chinese Parents Give Their Daughters Masculine Name
Background: The strict logic of patrilineal inheritance and the clan system led to a patriarchal society from ancient China and a deep-rooted cultural preference for sons over daughters. Names, as figurative symbols of blood ties and hierarchical order, have become one of the main ways for parents to express their expectations for children. The inconsistency between male names and female gender is contrary to the general rule that parents express blessings in their children’s names. Research Question: This study interviewed women with male names in China to understand their interpretations of their names and the gender perceptions behind the names in contemporary Chinese society. Methods: The researcher recruited Chinese interviewees using a snowball sampling method. Interviews lasted approximately 45 minutes and were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide. Questions explored how interviewees understand the meaning of their names, parents’ reasons for giving their daughters male names, their parents’ son preference conception, and perceptions of their own names. Analyze transcripts converted from interviews records to identify themes related to the name and gender identity. Results: Masculine female names present opposing gender trends in contemporary China. In economically developed large cities, masculine female names reflect parents\u27 de-gendered educational philosophy and gender-neutral tendencies; conversely, in economically backward regions, masculine female names reflect parents\u27 patriarchal beliefs in their desire to have sons. The reasons for masculine names affect the child\u27s acceptance of the name and gender identity. Females have a high acceptance of masculine names for gender-neutral reasons and perceive themselves as gaining masculine strength, while on the contrary, females reject masculine names given in favor of sons and express strong female gender identity.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1143/thumbnail.jp

Electroencephalogram classification of brain states using deep learning approach
The oldest diagnostic method in the field of neurology is electroencephalography (EEG). To grasp the information contained in EEG signals, numerous deep machine learning architectures have been developed recently. In brain computer interface (BCI) systems, classification is crucial. Many recent studies have effectively employed deep learning algorithms to learn features and classify various sorts of data. A systematic review of EEG classification using deep learning was conducted in this research, resulting in 90 studies being discovered from the Web of Science and PubMed databases. Researchers looked at a variety of factors in these studies, including the task type, EEG pre-processing techniques, input type, and the depth of learning. This study summarises the current methodologies and performance results in EEG categorization using deep learning. A series of practical recommendations is provided in the hopes of encouraging or directing future research using EEG datasets to use deep learning

A lack of published data on window leads from sites in New England prompted a project analyzing the sample from the Three Cranes Tavern site in Charlestown, MA. This structure was built c. 1629 in anticipation of John Winthrop\u27s arrival to settle Massachusetts Bay. For most of its existence, it was used as an ordinary. Like the rest of Charlestown, it was destroyed on June 17, 1775 during the battle of Bunker Hill. Excavated as part of the Big Dig in 1985, the sample included 148 items identified as window leads. Within this sample were window leads, window ties, and a small sample of scrap lead. The marked leads are described and an analysis of the physical characteristics of the leads is presented. A study of the window ties describes three types and relates them to historically known manufacturing processes

A Quixote in imagination might here find...an ideal baronage : Landscapes of Power, Enslavement, Resistance, and Freedom at Sherwood Forest Plantation
In the winter of 1862, two armed forces descended upon Fredericksburg; one blue, one gray. After suffering heavy losses during the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Union Army retreated to the northern banks of the Rappahannock River, making camp in Stafford County. From December 1862 until June 1863, the Union Army overran local plantations and small farm holdings throughout the area, including at Sherwood Forest, the home of the Fitzhugh family. Sherwood Forest was used as field hospital, a signal station, a balloon launch reconnaissance station, and a general encampment during the winter and spring of 1862/1863. Throughout the roughly six-month occupation of Sherwood Forest, many Union soldiers wrote of their time on the property, describing the house, outbuildings, and landscape of the plantation. A lawsuit regarding the Union Army occupation of the property filed by the antebellum owner, Henry Fitzhugh, in the Southern Claims Commission against the federal government also provides unprecedented documentation of life on the plantation before, during, and after the Civil War. These letters and official correspondences, in combination with archaeological evidence, extant landscape features, and oral history are examined to discuss how the landscape was used to convey power and control by the property owners during the antebellum period, with a brief consideration of the postbellum and Jim Crow eras. These same resources also provide evidence of active resistance to and undermining of these structures of power by those who were held in bondage on the property
