That\u27s a Good Question: Common Questions about Libraries from First Year College Students

    No full text
Working with First Year students as a librarian, I anticipate the questions that students have about libraries and library research, but when asked what do these students really want to know? In order to answer this research question, myself and two other librarians collected first year students questions about libraries from all first year library instruction during the fall 2024 semester. The qualitative data was coded and I will be presenting a visualization of the coded data. I expect this data to help inform the outreach and instruction for First Year students at Binghamton University Libraries

Integrating UAV-Based Thermal and LiDAR Data for Enhanced Thermal Modeling

    No full text
My thesis work explores the spatial variability of urban surface temperatures at high-level resolution. This research utilizes UAV-based lidar and thermal data to build three dimensional thermal models for planners, architects, and engineers to leverage when designing city infrastructure

A Visual Analytics Tool for Capturing User Trust Dynamics in Human-AI Communication: Presentation

    No full text
In this presentation, I introduce a real-time visual analytics tool that leverages a multi-agent collaboration system to capture user trust dynamics and analyze relevant user behaviors in human-agent communication. This tool can help stakeholders to observe the trust formation process as it happens and gain actionable insights into human-agent trust formation. This work has been published by the ACM CHI conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems 2025. Full paper link: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3706599.371979

Workfare and Women: Work Requirements and Sexism from the New Poor Law to Clinton-Era Reform

    Get PDF
Welfare has been distributed in the English-speaking world since the Elizabethan era, but the prospect of cash relief without work has often proved controversial. In response, so-called workfare, or welfare with work requirements, has repeatedly been implemented, yet often forces poor people to take on jobs with terrible working conditions and little opportunity for advancement. By comparing Britain’s switch from outdoor relief to workhouses in 1834 and the transition to conditional aid during the 1996 U.S. welfare reforms, this project examines the impact of work requirements on women. Drawing on parliamentary reports, government documents, newspaper articles, and discussions by historians and economists, this paper delves into the ideology of those who created the legislation and the perspectives of those who were affected by it. In both reforms, sexism and neo-Malthusian concerns of poor women reproducing led legislators to impose work conditions for welfare, as an attempt to increase self-sufficiency.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2025/1004/thumbnail.jp

Revitalizing Johnson City: Addressing the Housing Crisis Through Campus-Inspired Urban Design and 3D Modeling

    Get PDF
This paper explores the ongoing housing crisis in America and presents a unique approach to addressing it through urban design inspired by college campuses. By focusing on sustainable, pedestrian-friendly environments and mixed-use spaces, this research proposes a new model for revitalizing downtown areas. The study integrates principles from campus design with affordable housing solutions, emphasizing community connection, walkability, and sustainable growth. Using 3D modeling software, the paper will visualize how these design concepts could transform Johnson City, New York, a town currently undergoing revitalization. The research explores the historical, social, and economic factors contributing to the housing crisis, offering a holistic approach to urban planning that promotes both livability and economic stability. The results will highlight the need for urban reform and demonstrate how incorporating campus-based principles can benefit urban development, improving the quality of life and fostering economic growth.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2025/1030/thumbnail.jp

    Optical Tomography of Laser-Fabricated Waveguides

    Get PDF
This study employs optical tomography to investigate the 3-D index profiles of femtosecond laser-fabricated waveguides. By immersing the waveguides in an index-matching fluid, this research reconstructs their internal structure and analyzes their 3-D index profiles using interferometer-based optical tomography. To establish a benchmark, this method is first applied to a commercial fiber optic cable, providing a reference for evaluating the laser-written waveguides. In particular, the machine-learning technique is utilized for limited-angle tomography to visualize the 3-D index profiles inside glass. This method has the potential of 3-D visualization of waveguides and structures for system-on-chip applications, where precise control in fabrication and component visualization is critical for efficient optical communication and processing.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2025/1035/thumbnail.jp
