Digital Scholarship Needs Assessment: Binghamton University 2022

    Get PDF
As digital scholarship and digital humanities (DS/DH) continue to grow on campus the libraries continue to collaborate with campus communities to ensure faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students’ research, classroom, and learning experiences in these fields are supported. This needs assessment, carried out over the course of the Spring semester in 2022, investigated the current climate for using and teaching digital scholarship tools methods on Binghamton University\u27s campus. While Binghamton\u27s digital scholarship community continues to grow four major needs for support were identified by the community: access to DS/DH resources on campus, building a stronger sense of community, providing a better system of support for those starting and sustaining long-term projects, and creating a holistic approach to engaging in DS/DH research and pedagogy

    Eugenics Impact on Society

    Get PDF
The ideas of eugenics infiltrated significant sectors of public activities like state fairs and sports culture by promoting the idea of a better society created by “eliminating” bad genes from the gene pool. Significantly, it also entered the legal code, most notably in the Buck v. Bell court case in 1927, which decided that it was fine to forcibly sterilize any “feeble-minded” women in order to prevent them from spreading their bad genes onto the next generation. Disinformation is an intentional act of spreading false information with the intent of causing harm. In the field of disinformation studies, scholars research how disinformation is used in our daily lives and how it affects everyone. This project will focus on how disinformation is spread within scientific communities. It will also examine the psychological factors that lead to disinformation spreading. The question now is how bad science infiltrated into society and how bad information harms people. Since the bad information came from the place (scientific community) that we expected good/reliable information from, what is the psychological impact on the public and how did they deal with it? In this paper, I argue that the psychological processes of seizing and freezing disinformation created by eugenics pseudo-scientists led to long-term societal harm.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1011/thumbnail.jp

Public Health Implications of Chronic Wasting Disease: A Fifteen Year Follow-Up to a Point Source Exposure in Upstate New York

    Get PDF
Prion diseases have become increasingly important within biomedical research over the past several decades due to the increasing prevalence of these diseases among human and non-human animal populations and their potential to cross the species barrier. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) represents one condition with a troubling potential for cross-species transmission from cervids to humans. Prion diseases are 100% fatal and no treatment currently exists. According to USGS, CWD has been identified among both free-ranging and commercially captive cervids in Asia, Europe, and North America. The Oneida County Chronic Wasting Disease Surveillance Project involves a collaborative effort between the Oneida County Health Department and Binghamton University to investigate a known-point source exposure to CWD by participants eating contaminated venison at a game dinner in Upstate New York in 2005. This longitudinal study began with a baseline of eighty-one exposed individuals whose behavioral and health data were collected over the following fifteen year through 2020. During this study period, the number of participants who consumed venison and engaged in antler removal fell by 17.1%, and 5.7%, respectively. This study will detail our current results through a cross-sectional analysis of behavioral patterns and the health statuses of all participants in 2005, 2012, and 2020, in addition to a longitudinal analysis of a subset of the individuals who remained in this study throughout its duration. Research into the epidemiological characteristics and biological mechanisms behind CWD represents a critical avenue for both public health and biomedical studies.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1022/thumbnail.jp

Investingating the Link Between Adderall Abuse, Mood, and Diet in College Students

    Get PDF
Unprescribed Adderall use on college campuses as a means of increasing cognitive ability has become an increasingly prevalent problem today. This research explores the question of how Adderall abuse may be influenced by a poor diet or mood. An anonymous online survey was administered through word of mouth and social media platforms, such as GroupMe. The survey included basic demographic questions such as age and gender, as well as questions on dietary patterns, lifestyle choices, mood, frequency of ADHD medication use, and symptoms experienced. The data was analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, SPSS Version 25.0. In terms of diet, it was found that those who have taken Adderall were significantly more likely to have consumed frozen meals throughout the week, an indication of a low-quality diet. It was also found that those who reported being restless and fidgety during the past month were significantly more likely to have taken Adderall (p\u3c.05). Those who reported being restless and fidgety were also significantly more likely to have consumed components of the Western diet, such as fast foods, pre-made foods, and sweets (p\u3c.01) during the past week. Adderall abuse across college communities has been an increasing problem that has not been thoroughly acknowledged, so these results shed some light on the topic. Educating people about how their lifestyles may play a role in Adderall abuse is a step in the right direction to combat this problem.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1023/thumbnail.jp

Comparing Pre- and Post- Pandemic Viewer Responses to Eating Disorder Testimonials

    Get PDF
Many people experienced new or exacerbated mental, physical, and emotional health problems during the pandemic. For example, the University of Michigan Health Lab conducted a study in response to the statistically significant spike in hospitalizations for eating disorders among adolescents during COVID-19. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. With a rise in eating disorder cases and hospitalizations, and little literature published on the effects of pandemic conditions on young persons (aged 10-19 years) with eating disorders, we decided to conduct a qualitative and quantitative investigation of YouTube eating disorder testimonials before and after the onset of the pandemic (March 11, 2020). Our preliminary findings and sentiment analysis indicate that between the pre- and post-pandemic onset testimonials, comments are generally neutral to positive. However, the data still presented itself as statistically significant, possibly attributed to the post-pandemic responses being more positive than the pre-pandemic responses.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1024/thumbnail.jp
