Bistability and Switching Behavior in Moving Animal Groups

    Get PDF
Moving animal groups such as schools of fish and flocks of birds frequently switch between different group structures. Standard models of collective motion have been used successfully to explain how stable groups form via local interactions between individuals, but they are typically unable to produce groups that exhibit spontaneous switching. We are only aware of one model, constructed for barred flagtail fish that are known to rely on alignment and attraction to organize their collective motion, that has been shown to generate this type of behavior in 2D (or 3D). Interestingly, another species of fish, golden shiners, do exhibit switching but have been shown to use attraction and repulsion, not alignment, to coordinate themselves in schools. Suggesting that switching may be explained by attraction and repulsion alone, without an alignment interaction. Here we introduce a model based on attraction and repulsion only and show that groups exhibiting switching similar to that observed in experiments with golden shiners emerges. We also establish that switching occur in two boundary-free extensions of the model. Our work suggests that the bistability and switching behavior observed in golden shiners and other moving animal groups may be explained via attractive and repulsive interactions alone

Using Paleoecology of Planktic Foraminifera to Interpret the Thermocline Behavior of the Kuroshio Current Extension across the Mid-Piacenzian Warm Period

    Get PDF
The Kuroshio Current Extension (KCE) is a major western boundary current as part of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Such currents are currently warming at a rate 2-3 times faster than other regions in the world ocean. Observational sea surface temperature data from the past century have concluded that the KCE has warmed by approximately 1-2℃. Previous studies have utilized warm periods during the Pliocene to determine that the current may have warmed 3-4℃. Thus, it is imperative to quantify the behavior of the KCE under increased warming, such as using analogue warm periods in Earth’s past like the mid-Piacenzian Warm Period (mPWP). This study uses stable isotopic data from two species of thermocline-dwelling planktic foraminifera (Globoconella inflata and Neogloboquadrina incompta), from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 1207A, located on the northern edge of the KCE. Such data is used to characterize the behavior of the thermocline within the KCE through the Pliocene. This will be the first stable isotopic record to investigate the behavior of the KCE across the mPWP at a high resolution (~3 thousand years). In addition, we investigate how paleoecology of thermocline-dwelling planktic foraminifera affects the interpretations of geochemical records through time. Specifically, we compare stable isotopic records obtained from species that grow during the winter months (G. inflata) to that of a species present year-round in the KCE (N. incompta).https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1026/thumbnail.jp

    The Nature of Superfund Sites

    Get PDF
In the United States, there are highly contaminated areas that require long-term clean-ups under the law CERCLA known as Superfund sites. Currently, in Broome County there are eight sites including the Endicott Village Well Field, however there are sites that have been taken off the list such as BEC Trucking. What leads one site to be cleaned faster than another? This investigation dives into the nature of Superfund sites and what components lead to a site being cleaned faster than the other sites. The conclusions are being drawn from documents made by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), scholarly journals, and an interview with a program manager of the EPA. By examining this information I can deduce what the differences to each Superfund site is and form connections on what conditions aid the cleaning of these sites. What can be inferred based on this information is that there is a combination of political, economic, and social factors that can lead to the rapid cleaning of superfund sites. This information emphasizes the importance of the refinement of areas that are hazardous because it impacts the communities\u27 access to clean water and air. Getting these areas to be less polluted as quickly as possible will increase the safety of the residents in the region.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1043/thumbnail.jp

The Hidden Epidemic: The Unforeseen Impacts of COVID-19 on the Treatment of Opioid Addiction

    Get PDF
Following the outbreak of COVID-19, cases of opioid use disorder (OUD) have surged nationwide. The development of narcotic dependence often begins with the usage of prescription painkillers such as oxycodone, but in severe cases, victims eventually turn to illicit substances such as heroin or fentanyl to continue functioning. COVID-19 has exacerbated the likelihood of severe addiction developing. Recent accounts from healthcare workers shed new light on how the pandemic has restricted the availability of OUD treatment, which most of the current medical scholarship has not addressed. By quantitatively analyzing the relationship between COVID-19 and OUD case numbers along with evaluating the opinions of professionals in various medical journals, a clear depiction of the current state of the opioid crisis is revealed. In a world that remains dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, practices such as isolation and quarantine are becoming the “new normal,” pushing many towards increased substance-use as a form of coping. Furthermore, the process of receiving addiction treatment has become more complicated for those already suffering from OUD. For instance, in-person intervention and counseling groups made the required shift towards virtual environments such as telehealth, which is not always an accessible format for OUD patients. By analyzing how methods of addiction treatment have been impacted, this research aims to spread awareness of the “hidden epidemic” that is opioid addiction. While COVID-19 remains the primary concern of public health organizations worldwide, it is imperative that the opioid crisis and its millions of victims are not overshadowed by the looming pandemic.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1045/thumbnail.jp

Russian Intervention in Foreign Elections: Implications in the 2004 Ukrainian Presidential Election

    Get PDF
The early twenty-first century in the region of Eastern Europe was a historical moment which saw unprecedented political tension and strife in post-Soviet states. This phenomenon was particularly evident in the Ukrainian Presidential election of 2004 which can be characterized by a dichotomy of ideological polarity between traditionalist tyranny of Russia and contemporary democracy of the West. Though to understand this conflict further it is critical to understand the actors at play: Viktor Yuschenko who was heavily backed both ideologically and monetarily by the United States and Viktor Yanukovych who received extensive support from Russia and the Kremlin. This election was also one that was very concretely divided across geopolitical lines, and in many ways can be seen as an internal strife between Eastern and Western Ukraine. While this election is certainly one that has been studied extensively by scholars, it seems as if there is insufficient research being conducted on the role that foreign interference played in deciding the outcome of the election. Furthermore, additional insight into the larger motives of these state actors can be gained through analysis of data containing primary texts and documents through a lens that identifies such actors as purveyors of disinformation and false/misleading narratives. This paper will analyze several instances of the Russian’s revival of KGB style persuasion tactics employed to bolster the image of Yanukovych at the expense of Yuschenko. This case study will then be able to add a unique dimension to the preexisting field of disinformation studies.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1070/thumbnail.jp

    Maared

    Get PDF
I have developed a creative thesis entitled Maared—a play about Dora Maar, noted surrealist photography. The piece centers on her life, art, and relationships including the love affair she had with Pablo Picasso for which she is most famous. One of the goals in this piece is to highlight female artists throughout history who are better remembered for the art they inspired rather than the art they created. This is done in part to emphasize the role of women artists throughout history and counter some of the sexism that has taken place in art scholarship when the term muse is used in place of the term artist. Another goal is to counter the effect of the male gaze on art which has led to a celebration of the female body, but not of female creativity. The final goal is to share a human story of a person learning to accept themselves and their life as they look back on everything that’s happened. In this project, I’ve been doing research on Dora Maar specifically, her work as an artist, the models she worked with, the artists she modeled for, the relationships she had in life, and how all of this shaped her as a person. This research has been wide ranging from work that focuses on Picasso, work that focuses on the surrealist movement, work that focuses on Maar specifically, and autobiographical work from different people that knew her.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1084/thumbnail.jp

Detecting Apparent Competition by Shared Parasitoid Enemies between a Native and a Range-Expanding Oak Insect

    Get PDF
The expansion of a species’ range due to anthropogenic change leads to changes in species interactions with cascading effects in ecosystems. Oak gall wasps and their parasitoid enemies are a diverse community of insects that are structured by a network of interactions. One important interaction is “apparent competition,” in which a gall wasp species can indirectly compete with another species through shared parasitoids. Neuroterus saltatorius, an oak gall wasp, is experiencing a range expansion on the west coast of North America, where it outbreaks and causes damage in oak ecosystems. A co-occurring oak gall wasp, Andricus opertus, shares its range with N. saltatorius. We describe the parasitoid community of A. opertus to see if it is an apparent competitor to N. saltatorius. We have identified 32 morphospecies and are performing DNA barcoding to more accurately uncover interactions between parasitoids and the two host oak gall wasp species.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1094/thumbnail.jp

Asian American Satisfaction with Culturally Relevant Food in Binghamton

    Get PDF
This study assessed satisfaction of Asian American students of SUNY Binghamton on access to culturally relevant foods in the greater Binghamton area. The greater Binghamton area is a food desert; many residents suffer from lack of stable and affordable access to healthy foods. As Broome County is a homogenous population, with 85.8% of the population being white, the local area is also lacking in one of the tenets of food justice—culturally relevant foods—creating a culturally appropriate food desert as well (Social Explorer, 2019). On the other hand, the demographic within the SUNY Binghamton campus is more diverse, with only 55% of the student body being white. For the Asian-American community, which is often excluded from the American narrative as the “perpetual foreigner,” cultural foods provide a lifeline bridging cross cultural identity (Data USA, 2019). Through interviews and focus group potlucks in which students shared experiences adapting to available food options, this study revealed that a majority of Asian American students are dissatisfied with cultural offerings in and around campus. Food offerings often mimic the dominant culture of the demographic. Thus, the Asian American experience is underrepresented or misrepresented. When communities are overlooked, so too are methods by which to examine their health, and opportunities to better empathy and understanding for diverse groups of people.https://orb.binghamton.edu/research_days_posters_2022/1115/thumbnail.jp
